The traditional artificial neural networks encode information through the spike firing rate. Spiking neural networks fall into the third-generation artificial neural network models, which use the precisely timed spike trains to encode neural information. The computational models can accurately simulate the neural network activities of human brain, and provide powerful capabilities of signal processing to solve the complex problem. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning algorithm for single-layer spiking neural networks based on the spike train kernel function, which can implement the complex spatio-temporal pattern learning of spike trains. Furthermore, a pattern classifier based on single-layer spiking neural networks is constructed for image recognition problem. We test the learning performance of the proposed algorithm by the image classification task on the LabelMe dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has got good image classification accuracy for the test dataset, and the different sizes of receptive fields influence classification accuracies significantly.

This article overviews image sensor communication (ISC), a subset of visible light communication (VLC) system that uses a high-speed image sensor as a reception device. Owing to a massive number of pixels and spatial separation of multiple light souces, ISC can be used in an outdoor mobile environment, suitable for automotive applications. The paper also introduces some results from the authors' work on ISC and its application to vehicle-to-everything (V2x) communication. © 2018 The Author(s).

ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) which follows the Nyquist rate has changed signal processing. Most of the real time applications required too many samples if Nyquist rate is followed. This may involve more cost or even practically not feasible to build systems capable of acquiring samples at Nyquist rate. Compressive Sensing (CS) is a recent trend emerged as a better concept than Nyquist technique by enabling reconstruction of sparse signals which are acquired bellow Nyquist rate. The authors propose reconstruction of image using Compressive Sensing Technique. Various matrices like Partial Hadmard, Bernoulli Matrix, Uniform Spherical and Random Matrix with proper threshold are used. The reconstruction time, SNR and MSE are measured. Experiments are carried on various sized image with Foreward Hadmard Transform. The experimental results show that for an image of size 256 x 256 the reconstruction time is 9 sec with signal to noise ratio 23 dB. For inage of size 512 x 512 the reconstruction time is 15 sec with signal to noise ratio as 26dB. This gives the opportunity to build CS hardware as an alternative for ADC.

The Group for Quality Assurance and Industrial image processing has built a new experimental setup to characterize cameras and image sensors according to EMVA1288 standard. Next to the investigation of SLN (Sensitivity-Linearity-Noise) and spatial non-uniformities, the new test bench also provides an examination of the temperature dependence of sensors. The temperature dependent dark current produces an undesirable signal which affects the image quality negative and thus has to be known. It is caused by thermally induced electrons and increases linearly with exposure time as well as exponentially with temperature. To measure the dark current, it is necessary to vary and determine the temperature of the sensor. This was made possible by a climate chamber with a Peltier element, which enables a heating and cooling of the camera. An infrared sensor allows a contact-free detection of the actual camera temperature. Furthermore, the light source was improved for the new test bench. With the installed custom light source and integration sphere a homogeneous irradiation up to 97% is ensured. This way better results in tests were achieved. The light source with variable filter housing enables the use of monochromatically light in a wavelength range of 350 - 1700nm. A live monitoring of the irradiation during the image capturing is possible. A MATL AB script assists in the configuration of the camera, the measurement and the data storage. The user is guided step by step through the program. At the end of the measurements an automated evaluation follows, which illustrates graphs and parameters in a streamlined and print-ready format.

This paper presents 15-4 compressor. An approximate 5-3 compressor was used in the 15-4 compressor. It is less power consumption, So Approximate 5-3 compressors are used in four different ways in 15-4 compressor. In all the cases we have analyzed the results. The proposed 15-4 compressor is using in 16x16 bit multiplier simulation. By comparing the Simulation results show that accurate 15-4 compressor with proposed approximate compressors, the proposed approximate multiplier achieves more power. The proposed multipliers pass rate is high as compared to previous approximate multipliers. Finally, the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of the image is measured in the proposed multiplier is used in image processing applications. Proposed approximate multiplier image is compared to accurate multiplier image. The proposed approximate multiplier results show better than existing approximate multiplier.

Road scene understanding is a critical component in an autonomous driving system. Although the deep learning-based road scene segmentation can achieve very high accuracy, its complexity is also very high for developing real-time applications. It is challenging to design a neural net with high accuracy and low computational complexity. To address this issue, we investigate the advantages and disadvantages of several popular CNN architectures in terms of speed, storage and segmentation accuracy. We start from the Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) with VGG, and then we study ResNet and DenseNet. Through detailed experiments, we pick up the favorable components from the existing architectures and at the end, we construct a light-weight network architecture based on the DenseNet. Our proposed network, called DSNet, demonstrates a real-time testing (inferencing) ability (on the popular GPU platform) and it maintains an accuracy comparable with most previous systems. We test our system on several datasets including the challenging Cityscapes dataset (resolution of 1024×512) with an mIoU of about 69.1 % and runtime of 0.0147 second per image on a single GTx 1080Ti. We also design a more accurate model but at the price of a slower speed, which has an mIoU of about 72.6 % on the CamVid dataset.

A Moving Average Filter should be among the first filters, if not the first, one should consider when speed, good precision and low to medium hardware resources are what is required for implementing image noise reduction on a physical device. The technique is fairly simple to implement, but if taken a straight forward approach, the result will be a blurry image which is undesirable. Since the human eye is most sensitive to the sharp tone transition, we introduced a contour detection technique. Because the inherently lack of floating point representation, except for the most modern FPGA's versions, all the calculations were done in fixed point. Also, images used were scaled up to 10x10(3) colour levels (a bit higher than 2(13) bits). Real results of double precision 64-bit were achieved through Matlab and then compared to a Zynq-7000 FPGA using 64-bit fixed point calculations. The error difference obtained between both implementations was 1x10(-4).

For decades, Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been a crucial role for video and image compression since Chen and Pratt proposed image compression application based on DCT. The energy compaction property of DCT is highly efficient for the compression when combined with entropy coder and a specific scan order. By exploiting the property, DCT has widely been used for video and image compression from JPEG, which is the famous image compression format, to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), which is the latest video compression standard, over the 20 years. Since DCT has been used for image compression, several transforms have been proposed for the better compression performance than DCT. Among them, the most famous transform is Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT). The KLT has the best performance in the aspects of the energy compaction. However, the KLT must send the extra information of transform basis, which is not required in DCT, therefore its compression performance is worse and complexity is heavier than DCT. To achieve the energy compaction performance of KLT without extra information, we propose the machine learning network, TransNet, for image/video transform. TransNet is trained to achieve the better energy compaction property than DCT and maintain the image quality simultaneously. To find the optimal point between reconstructed image quality and energy compaction, we propose new loss function based the orthogonal transform property and regularization term. To evaluate the compression performance of the proposed network, we compared DCT and TransNet using JPEG encoder. In terms of the BD-rate on Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), the proposed network shows about 11% gain compared with DCT.

To improve the efficiency of WebP images lossy compression algorithm for heterogeneous accelerating based on FPGAs in data center server, this paper proposed an optimization method of WebP image lossy compression algorithm for FPGAs. By adopting the optimization method of this paper, the overall throughput performance of WebP heterogeneous acceleration solution based on OpenCL language can be up to 281MPixel/s. The energy efficiency ratio is 2.29x higher than Intel xeon E5-2690v3 processor. Compare with the industry-leading WebP heterogeneous acceleration solution of xilinx and CTAccel, the throughput performance of this paper is 2.5x better than xilinx and 1.8x better than CTAccel. Finally, this paper improves the utilization of RAM resources according to the characteristics of the RAM block in the FPGA.

The CT system structure matrix in the coded aperture compressive x-ray tomography (CACxT) is highly structured and thus the random coded apertures are not optimal. A fast approach based on minimal information loss is proposed. The peak signal to noise ratios (PSNR) of the reconstructed images with optimized coded apertures exhibit significant gains and the design execution time is reduced by orders of magnitude. Simulations results for optimized coded apertures are shown, and their performance is compared to the use of random coded apertures.
