In this paper, we propose a CMOS image sensor data-readout method for convolutional operations based on 3T-APS pixel, which is able to output convolutional kernel-sized data from sensor parts simultaneously, with processing near sensor architecture. By adding extra output lines in the pixel array and introducing a digital controlled analog crossbar named programmable analog tunnel hub (PATH), the proposed CIS can realize maximum 5x5 kernel-readout with minimum 1 slide step. The proposed CIS readout method has been verified by pixel array with 32x32 resolution, where each pixel occupying 40x40 mu m(2) area with 83.6% fill factor. The CIS is designed in 180nm standard CMOS mixed-signal process with power consumption of 5.66mW and frame rate of 100fps@20MHz. Compared with previous vision sensor chips, this work is optimized for prevailing deep learning applications and achieves higher energy efficiency for the whole smart perception systems with better scalability.

Change detection is an important synthetic aperture radar (SAR) application, usually used to detect changes on the ground scene measurements in different moments in time. Traditionally, change detection algorithm (CDA) is mainly designed for two synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images retrieved at different instants. However, more images can be used to improve the algorithms performance, witch emerges as a research topic on SAR change detection. image stack information can be treated as a data series over time and can be modeled by autoregressive (AR) models. Thus, we present some initial findings on SAR change detection based on image stack considering AR models. Applying AR model for each pixel position in the image stack, we obtained an estimated image of the ground scene which can be used as a reference image for CDA. The experimental results reveal that ground scene estimates by the AR models is accurate and can be used for change detection applications.

The JPEG committee (Joint Photographic Experts Group, formally known as ISO/IEC SC29 WG1) is currently in the process of standardizing JPEG xS, a new interoperable solution for low-latency, lightweight and visually lossless compression of image and video. This codec is intended to be used in applications where content would usually be transmitted or stored in uncompressed form such as in live production, display links, virtual and augmented reality, self driving vehicles or frame buffers. It achieves bandwidth and power reduction for transparent and low latency coding for compression ratios ranging from 2:1 to 6:1. The subjective assessment of the impact of visually lossless compression poses particular challenges. This paper describes the subjective quality evaluation conducted on the JPEG xS core coding system. In particular, it details the test procedures and compares the results obtained by the different evaluation laboratories involved in the standardization effort.

Adapting complex Convolution Neural Network (CNN) applications on embedded processors is a challenge due to the massive memory bandwidth and computational requirements. In particular, the CNN memory bandwidth requirement poses a huge challenge for the processors with Scratch Pad Memory (SPM), usually of limited size. In this paper, we present an Intelligent Bandwidth Manager (IBWM) to efficiently handle the CNN bandwidth for SPM based processors. The proposed IBWM is a two fold approach which includes Intelligent SPM Manager (ISM) to optimize the number of accesses to SDRAM by analysing the data patterns, and Feature Map Compression (FMC) to further reduce the bandwidth by exploiting the feature map data sparsity. The IBWM is independent of any processor architecture and can be adopted in any processor with SPM. The proposed IBWM is experimented with ResNet-50 [1] and AlexNet [2] networks on a Samsung Reconfigurable Processor (SRP) [3] for various SPM sizes. The SDRAM bandwidth results show, 2x improvement compared to MIT Eyeriss [4] for AlexNet, and 4x-8x improvement compared to primitive bandwidth management techniques for AlexNet and ResNet-50. The proposed method achieves the bandwidth closer to the minimum possible bandwidth. © 2018 IEEE.

Color quantization is an important operation with many applications in computer graphics and image processing and analysis. Clustering algorithms have been extensively applied to this problem. However, despite its popularity as a general purpose clustering algorithm, k-means has not received much attention in the colour quantization literature because of its high computational requirements and sensitivity to initialization. In this paper, we propose a novel color quantization method based on the k-means algorithm. The proposed method utilizes adaptive initialization, deterministic sub-sampling and efficient coreset construction to attain high speed and high quality quantization. Experiments on a set of benchmark images demonstrate the proposed method to be significantly faster than k-means while delivering nearly identical results.

A compacted ball pod of image fusion system of middle wave band infrared and visible light image is designed and manufactured and tested. The system is composed of image collecting, processing and displaying part. image collecting part includes a cooled infrared bolometer and a CCD camera. image process part is a complex circuit penal composed of TMS320DM642, TVP5150, SAA7121H, SDRAM and other electronic components, while displaying part is computer or LCD. The focus length of cooled infrared bolometer is 300/ 75mm of Ge lens and that of CCD is continuous 10- 300mm to match the field of view of bolometer. The optical axises of them are rectified to be parallel carefully, thus they can aim at the target in infinite distance. The response wavelength of the cooled infrared bolometer is 3.3- 4.8 mu m and that of CCD is 0.2 similar to 1.1 mu m. The pixel of bolometer is 320x256 and that of CCD is 720x576. images of bolometer and CCD are decoded in the input circuit of TVP5150 and form the digital signal of BT.656, then the decoded videos are transferred to TMS320DM642 circuit. The pixel number of bolometer is increased to 720x576 in the DM642 to match that of CCD camera, the decoded images are stored in SDRAM temporally, then the images of bolometer and CCD are fused under the weighted average algorithm in order to keep the real time response. The output image is encoded to PAL format in SAA7121H, so as to be displayed in monitor. The experiment in room and the experiments outside indicate the advantage of fusion algorithm in some degree. By comparing the observing result of three images of infrared, visible, fusing images, a primary conclusion is obtained that the weight coefficient will influence the fusing effect in different circumstances. Next a modified fusion algorithm of pixel comparing of infrared and visible images will implant to the DM642.

In this paper, an ultralow and high speed photocurrent analog signal readout circuit in order to amplify and process the output of SPAD(single-photon avalanche diodes) photocurrent is presented. The four main parts of the ASIC are low temperature coefficient(7.85ppm/degrees C) bandgap reference circuit, high linearity and high common-mode rejection ratio(120.6dB) operational amplifier, filter circuit and low-delay(63ns/1MHZ) comparator circuit. The SPAD readout chip is fabricated in a standard 0.5um CMOS process and size of 672um*780um. The simulation results indicate the chip successfully amplifies and processes 80nA and 1MHZ photocurrent analog signal. The circuit is fit for processing fleetness change and faint signal in CMOS image sensor of acquisition technology.

In this paper, we develop an embedded video compression scheme with a constant compression rate to reduce the communication bandwidth on video display links. The basic compression unit is a 2x4 pixel block and all blocks are coded independently to facilitate the function of partial frame update. The proposed embedded compression scheme features an ensemble of compression techniques. These techniques include various spatial domain predictions and vector quantization. The compression ratio of the luminance component is fixed at 2 and those of the two color components are 4. This leads to an overall 3 times constant rate compression. The compression efficiency of the proposed scheme is evaluated based on a set of test images. The achieved PSNR values range from 23.7dB to 38.86dB and the visual distortions are barely noticeable for display on hand held devices.

This paper presents a study comparing the coding efficiency performance of three video codecs: (a) the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) Bench Mark Set 1 (BMS1);(b) AV1 codec of the Alliance for Open Media (AOM);and (c) the HEVC Main Profile Reference Software. Two approaches to coding were used: (i) constant quality (QP);and (ii) target bit rate (VBR). Constant quality encoding is performed with all the three codecs for an unbiased comparison of the core coding tools. Whereas, target bitrate coding is done with the AV1 codec to study the compression efficiency achieved with rate control, which can and does have a significant impact. Performance is tabulated for on two fronts: (1) objective performance based on PSNR's and (2) informal subjective assessment. Our general conclusion derived from the assessment of objective metrics and subjective evaluation is that VVC (BMS1) appears to be superior to AV1 and HEVC under both constant quality and target bitrate coding constraints. AV1 shows superior coding gains with respect to HEVC under target bitrate coding, but in general has increased computational complexity and henceforth an encode time factor of 20 - 30 over HEVC.

Medical image quality assessment (MIQA) is highly related to content interpretation and disease diagnosis in medical community. However, a few metrics have been developed. On the contrary, massive models have been designed for natural image quality assessment (NIQA) in the field of computer vision. Connect both sides of MIQA and NIQA is useful and challenging. This study explores signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as the intermediate metric to bridge the gap between MIQA and NIQA and consequently, models for NIQA can be employed or modified for MIQA applications. A number of 411 images from 4 magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequences are collected. First, the consistency of SNR in MIQA is validated which involves inter-rater and intra-rater (inter-session) reliability analysis. Then, 4 NIQA models (BIQI, BLIINDS-II, BRISQUE and NIQE) are evaluated on these MR images. After that, the correlation between SNR values and NIQA results are analyzed. Statistical analysis indicates that SNR measurement shows reliability regard to different raters in each sequence. Moreover, BLIINDS-II and BRISQUE have the potential for automated MIQA tasks. This study attempts to use SNR bridging the gap between MIQA and NIQA, and a large-scale experiment should be further conducted to verify the conclusion.
