Recent trends in multimedia technologies indicate a significant growth of interest for new imaging modalities that aim to provide immersive experiences by increasing the engagement of the user with the content. Among other solutions, point clouds denote an alternative 3D content representation that allows visualization of static or dynamic scenes in a more immersive way. As in many imaging applications, the visual quality of a point cloud content is of crucial importance, as it directly affects the user experience. Despite the recent efforts from the scientific community, subjective and objective quality assessment for this type of visual data representation remains an open problem. In this paper, we propose a new, alternative framework for quality assessment of point clouds. In particular, we develop a rendering software, which performs real-time voxelization and projection of the 3D point clouds onto 2D planes, while allowing interaction between the user and the projected views. These projected images are then employed by two-dimensional objective quality metrics, in order to predict the perceptual quality of the displayed stimuli. Benchmarking results, using subjective ratings that were obtained through experiments in two test laboratories, show that our framework provides high predictive power and outperforms the state of the art in objective quality assessment of point cloud imaging.

In past performance analyses and comparisons of MWIR and LWIR systems, infrared systems scientists and engineers did not have the cumulative technologies that we will soon enjoy. Large format-small pitch, deep wells, and massive processing do not exist in a single focal plane, but they are reality now individually and will exist collectively in the near future. How do we best use these technologies and how do we compare sensors when we use these technologies? From a more fundamental aspect, how do you optimize a system given that practical limits are minimized and theoretical limits apply? Smaller pitch infrared detectors can provide longer range performance for a given aperture and higher photon collection duty cycles (deep wells and faster frame rates) can allow better Modulation Transfer Function correction. Massive processing allows for recovery of resolution by trading surplus signal to noise ratio. Non-uniformity correction becomes an important issue, but there are smart methods using higher duty cycles to address the problems. LWIR can compete with MWIR using the additional photons given an improved photon collection duty cycle. A holistic approach to system design can provide for an extremely high-performance system. It is also worth mentioning that infrared targeting sensor design in the future should be quantified with more than just identification range. Since these technologies provide more than a human can consume, the sensors need to be designed smarter to better utilize human consumption limits. An example is that small pitch high density sensors (solid state imaging) can provide faster target prosecution which allows for faster target engagements. We show these possibilities using a LWIR targeting sensor to demonstrate the concept of optimizing pitch-well-processing (PWP).

Previous work has demonstrated that Fourier imaging data will often possess multifold linear shift-invariant autoregression relationships. This autoregressive structure is useful because it enables missing data samples to be imputed as a linear combination of neighboring samples, and also implies that certain structured matrices formed from the data will have low rank characteristics. The latter observation has enabled a range of powerful structured low-rank matrix recovery techniques for reconstructing sparsely-sampled and/or low-quality data in Fourier imaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging. In this work, we demonstrate theoretically and empirically that similar modeling principles also apply to sinogram data, and demonstrate how this can be leveraged to restore missing information from real high-resolution x-ray imaging data from an integrated circuit.

EMU(Electric Multiple Units) maintenance platform is one of the key equipments of the motor Train base and EMU application, provides convenient for EMU daily maintenance and inspection, maintenance and repair. In the process design of the equipment, hydraulic crossover and other methods are adopted to meet the needs of the maintenance personnel on different types of EMUs. Therefore, the tipping boards are set up on the actual platform and protection network to ensure the safety of the workers' reaching the top. The EMUs usually use a four line storehouse, and the number of tipping plates is hundreds of them. Most of them are reversing /receiving by cylinder driving, and a large number of flip plates are distributed in the workshop. Besides, the state of the retractable boards and the faults have important influence on the operation. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the state of the flip plate. At present, it is more dependent on the monitoring and controlling system of the mechanical stroke switch in China. Due to the state of the hardware and the stability of the system, the method has the risk of omission and false alarm in some cases. Meanwhile, the switch signal can not directly display the real-time state of the tipping board. Therefore, the present invention provides a high-definition network camera image processing board state detection system based on double plate state real-time monitoring and detection, enhance the safety of EMU maintenance platform. The real-time image acquisition, calculating the specified texture information area gray co-occurrence matrix, generating feature vector descriptor, using support vector machine (SVM) classification method for feature vector classification, training classifier, and use the classifier to recognize the flap, and locate the flap position. Frames are the foundation of the linear operators used in the decomposition and reconstruction of signals, such as the discrete Fourier transform, Gabor, wavelets, and curvelet transforms. The emergence of sparse representation models has shifted of the emphasis of signal representation in frame theory toward sparse $l_applications$ -minimization problems. In this paper, we apply frame theory to the sparse representation of signals in which a synthesis dictionary is used for a frame and an analysis dictionary is used for a dual frame. We developed a novel dictionary learning algorithm (called Parseval K-SVD) to learn a tight-frame dictionary. We then leveraged the analysis and synthesis perspectives of signal representation with frames to derive optimization formulations for problems pertaining to image recovery. Our preliminary results demonstrate that the images recovered using this approach are correlated to the frame bounds of dictionaries, thereby demonstrating the importance of using different dictionaries for different applications.

Based on previous work on thermal imager performance analysis at Fraunhofer IOSB using specific scenes and patterns, we present our advances in setting up a testbed for thermal imager characterization with a MIRAGE (TM) xL infrared scene projector. In the first part, we outline the experimental setup of our testbed. It allows for mimicking infrared imaging of real scenes in a controlled laboratory environment. We describe the process of dynamic infrared scene generation as well as the physical limitations of our scene projection setup. A second part discusses ongoing and future applications. This testbed extends our standard lab measurements for thermal imagers by a image based performance analysis method. Scene based methods are necessary to investigate and assess advanced digital signal processing (ADSP) algorithms which are becoming an integral part of thermal imagers. We use this testbed to look into inferences of unknown proprietary ADSP algorithms by choosing suitable test scenes. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of dazzling on thermal imagers by coupling infrared laser radiation into the projected scene. The studies allow to evaluate the potential and hazards of infrared dazzling and to describe correlated effects. In a future step, we want to transfer our knowledge of VIS/NIR laser protection into the infrared regime.

Plenoptic cameras can capture the light field of a 3D scene in a single shot, which makes them attractive for several applications, such as depth estimation and refocusing. The difficulties in accurate calibration of available plenoptic camera designs, however, makes it also difficult to reliably assess such applications. This arises a need to have a ground-truth plenoptic data. We propose an accurate and efficient way to simulate the defocused plenoptic camera based on the geometric optics principles and the concept of densely sampled light field. In particular, we utilize the open-source computer graphics rendering software tool Blender and rely on a set of conventional 2D pinhole images of the scene captured from several viewpoints within the aperture of the main lens of the plenoptic camera. Elemental-image wise examination of plenoptic data and testing of post processing algorithms verifies the accuracy of the simulation. © 2017 IEEE.

Both light-field and polarization information contain lots of clues about scenes, and they can be widely used in variety of computer vision tasks. However, existing imaging systems cannot simultaneously capture the light-field and polarization information. In this paper, we present a low-cost and high-performance miniaturized polarimetric light-field camera, which is based on the six heterogeneous sensors array. The main challenge for the proposed strategy is to align the multi-view images with different polarization characteristics, especially for regions with high degree of polarization -- in which the intensity correlations are commonly weak. To solve this problem, we propose to use Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based stereo matching method for aligning the heterogeneously polarized images accurately. After stereo matching, both the light field and the Stokes vectors of scene are estimated, and the polarimetry conventions, e.g., the polarization angle, the linear polarization degree and the circular polarization degree, are given. We implement the prototype of the multi-sensor polarization light-field camera and perform extensive experiments on it. The polarimetric light-field camera achieves six live streaming on time and the heterogeneous processor of NVIDIA Jetson Tx2 is exploited for image processing. Benefiting from the multi-sensor parallel polarization imaging and efficient parallel processing, the proposed system achieves promising performance on time resolution, signal-to-noise ratio. Besides, we develop the object recognition applications to show the superiorities of proposed system.

In approximating, the requirement for accurate results is ignored because of some other applications with better performance in terms of area or delay. Multipliers are key arithmetic circuits in many of these applications including digital signal processing (DSP). Here in this paper we propose an approximate multiplier circuit with two various architectures where one is designed by modifying the design of the circuit by adding AND-OR logic approximation in the partial product generation stage and a dual quality adder at the final stage of the multiplication for error recovery. The other one is by adding the same AND-OR logic approximation in the partial product reduction stage where it is applied tow only least significant part and accurate adders are used in the remaining for final outcome. In addition, many errors make little noticeable variations in practice, for instance image processing owing to human perceptual restrictions. Error-tolerant algorithms and their utilization inspired the progress of inexact multipliers which trade-off between power efficiency, area and speed. The proposed approximate multipliers have been shown that both have a lower area and one with better accuracy and error recovery other with delay than an exact Wallace multiplier and existing approximate designs. Functional analysis has shown that on a statistical basis, the proposed multipliers have considerable error distances and thus, they achieve a high accuracy and better area. To show the effectiveness of the work we had implemented and image processing application with the help of xilinx System generator. The total designs are done and implemented in xilinx ISE 14.7 with Verilog HDL coding.

This paper presents an anti-jamming Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver antenna testing system. The system is composed of a set of six circular rails with different radii that are installed to emulate GPS satellite orbits, a set of GPS antennas each carried by a trolley that can move on the rails to emulate GPS satellites, a trolley movement controller to emulate the GPS satellite constellation propagation, and a multi-channel GPS simulation system that provides GPS signal and GPS satellite state position information. The GPS receiver antenna under test is at the center of the rails. As the GPS antennas carried by trolleys move on the rail to emulate the GPS satellite constellation propagation, the GPS receiver antenna under test receives the emulated GPS signals. The GPS signals' arrival direction is almost the same as that coming from real GPS satellites. The anti-jamming GPS receiver antenna testing system can emulate a GPS satellite constellation with multiple GPS satellites;with high emulation accuracy (in both GPS signal phase and satellite angular position with respect to the GPS receiver antenna under test);requiring only a single phase calibration at the beginning of each test;and can support a 4 hours test / emulation.
