Maintenance and spare parts management are interrelated and the literature shows the significance of optimizing them jointly. simulation is an efficient tool in modeling such a complex and stochastic problem. In this paper, we optimize preventive maintenance and spare provision policy under continuous review in a non-identical multi-component manufacturing system through a combined discrete event and continuous simulation model coupled with an optimization engine. The study shows that production dynamics and labor availability have a significant impact on maintenance performance. Optimization results of Simulated Annealing, Hill Climb and Random solutions are compared. The experiments show that Simulated annealing achieved the best results although the computation time was relatively high. Investigating multi-objective optimization might provide interesting results as well as more flexibility to the decision maker.

A robust simulation-based optimization approach is proposed for truck-shovel systems in surface coal mines to maximize the expected value of revenue obtained from customer trains. To this end, a large surface coal mine in North America is considered as case study, and a highly detailed simulation model of that mine is constructed in Arena. Factors encountered in material handling operations that may affect the robustness of revenue are then classified into 1) controllable, 2) uncontrollable and 3) constant categories. Historical production data of the mine is used to derive probability distributions for the uncontrollable factors. Then, Response Surface Methodology is applied to derive an expression for the variance of revenue under the influence of controllable and uncontrollable factors. The resulting variance expression is applied as a constraint to the mathematical formulation for optimization using OptQuest. Finally, coal production is observed under variation in number of trucks and down events.

Abandonment is a key indicator of performance and a driver of service level in a call center. Calls that abandon affect the wait times of the remaining calls in the queue and the ability of call center resources to service the remaining calls. This interaction is further complicated when the call center has multiple arrival channels, handled by two groups of resources with a shared pool of resources between them. In this case, a valid call center model necessitates a highly accurate method for modeling abandonment. This paper documents a unique application of Kaplan-Meier survival analysis to model call center abandonment in a discrete event simulation model. The paper also demonstrates the benefits of using Kaplan-Meier verses another approach.

Medical disaster management research aims at identifying methodologies and rules of best practice and evaluates performance and outcome indicators for medical disaster management. However, the conduct of experimental studies is either impossible or ethically inappropriate. We generate realistic victim profiles for medical disaster simulations based on medical expertise. These profiles are used in a medical disaster model where victim entities evolve in parallel through a medical response model and a victim pathway model. The medical response model focuses on the pre-hospital phase which includes triage procedures, evacuation processes and medical processes. Medical decisions such as whether to evacuate or to treat the current victim are based on the RPM (respiratory rate, pulse rate, motor response) parameters of the victim. We present results for a simulated major road accident and show how the level of resource can influence outcome indicators.

The primary objective of the project titled "A Retrospective Oral History of Computer simulation" is to document the emergence of computer simulation since world War II. We seek to capture the early history of the field through digital videos of interviews with the pioneers whose seminal contributions have had long-lasting impacts on simulation practice and theory. This project involves the following activities: (a) identifying those pioneers who are to participate in the project;(b) making the logistical arrangements necessary to produce high-quality digital-video recordings of structured interviews with those pioneers;and (c) carrying out the interviews, editing the recordings, and posting those recordings in a universally accessible permanent digital repository. The digital videos produced by this project will be made freely available on the Web site of the simulation Archive hosted by the North Carolina State University Libraries. We discuss progress to date and future plans for the project.

A systematic approach to idle time reduction can significantly boost the efficiency of construction equipment during their lifetime, result in higher overall productivity, and ultimately protect public health and the environment. Towards this goal, this paper describes research aimed at designing a framework for estimating heavy equipment idle times during a construction project. A distributed sensor network is deployed to communicate and present metrics about idle times and production rates and inform project managers and field operators when idle time thresholds are exceeded. The designed user interface includes a graphical representation of the site layout to visualize the status of equipment in real time in support of project management and decision-making tasks. Collected data will be also used to determine energy consumption and CO2 emission levels as the project makes progress. Using simulation modeling, various operational strategies are evaluated from the point of view of equipment emission and idle times.

The paper examines working of outdoor patient departments in a general hospital. There are several inpatient wards and out-patient departments and hundreds of patients visited the hospital daily for treatment. The place is chaotic and noisy, especially in the morning. The current performance is evaluated and newer ways are identified to measure the performance of the hospital. Various alternatives are evaluated by simulating each of them. As against the commonly held view that there is a shortage of staff in the hospital, it is actually a problem of maintaining discipline and scheduling of staff. Further, there is a need to change the way activities are performed. The paper also suggests ways of measuring process oriented performance of Outdoor Patients Department (OPD) and OPD registration counters.

Police patrol district design presents a multi-objective optimization problem with two goals: minimizing workload variation between patrol districts and minimizing the response time for officers responding to calls for service. We evaluate three different methods for scoring district designs: a closed form probability based approach, a discrete-event simulation based on hypercube models for spatial queuing systems, and an agent-based simulation model. We find that all methods provide similar evaluations when service demand is low enough that cross-boundary support is infrequent. However, when the demand for service routinely exceeds the supply available within districts, only the agent-based simulation model accurately represents the resulting complexities and significantly changes the evaluation scores to reflect the behavior of the system.
