Effective and efficient information sharing in a warfare environment is a key feature of the Network Centric Warfare (NCW) concept, and a combat simulation model should reflect this key feature. Most existing combat simulation models adopt a simplified communication model, which may lead to overestimating an actual level of communication performance. On the other hand, while providing accurate assessment of communication performance, a low-level, detailed, engineered model for communication tends to be overly sophisticated and computationally intensive to incorporate in typical combat models. In this paper, we propose a communication model in the context of an engagement-level of NCW combat simulation. In particular, we use a propagation loss model to determine a success or failure of individual communication attempts. We also define a set of model parameters to characterize various communication networks deployed in a battlefield. Preliminary simulation experiments and their results are presented to illustrate the proposed modeling framework.

Capacity management and scheduling decisions are important for managing an outpatient clinic in which multiple classes of patients are treated. After an appointment is scheduled, it can be rescheduled, cancelled, or a patient may not show-up on their appointment day. This study simulates the behavior of patients with regard to the time to appointment, examining different demand rates and service times for each patient class (new external patients, internal patients, established patients and subsequent visit patients);we also consider different delay-dependent reschedule, cancellation, and no-show rates. A discrete event simulation model is developed to analyze the effects of allowing different appointment windows, i. e., the maximum time between the appointment request date and the actual appointment date, for different patient classes. Capacity utilization, patient access, and financial rewards are used as the performance indicators.

EXPRESS is a database tool the Air Force (AF) uses to prioritize depot maintenance of reparable spare parts based on warfighter need. Many studies have examined individual portions of EXPRESS, though few examine it as an entire system. This effort proposes a modeling approach for examining overall system behavior of EXPRESS using discrete event simulation. The emphasis of the model is to be flexible enough to provide useful insight into system performance and a foundation for future expansion and analysis. In current operations, EXPRESS runs every day. This research effort tries to determine the impact on the depot repair process' ability to respond to warfighter need due to running EXPRESS less frequently. A discrete event simulation written in Arena, modeling the general flow of information and parts through the depot repair process, is used to determine the effect of the frequency of EXPRESS runs on Mission Capable (MICAP) hours.

The cost-and-time-optimized planning of earthmoving projects has been significantly boosted as a result of deploying simulation techniques which enable project managers to effectively comprehend the behavior of projects. However, the realism and accuracy of the simulation models diminish as a result of the heavy reliance on the statistical data and of not taking into account the context-specific features of the project. Similarly, the more unique the characteristics of projects and novel the construction methods, the less the possibility of retrofitting a historic pattern to new projects. On the other hand, the identification of potential accidents on construction sites has been a major concern in the construction industry. To address these issues, this research proposes a framework based on the integration of new tracking technologies used in Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) with a real-time simulation technique. A prototype is developed to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper presents a preliminary analysis to reduce patient waiting time for consultation in an outpatient eye clinic, using a data driven discrete event simulation model. This study is of interest and importance for a better understanding of the causes of patient long waiting in an actual clinic in an effort to reduce the patient waiting time for consultation. Several proposed strategies, such as pool scheduling of patients, uniform patient arrivals and improved process flow, have been studied. It is found that patients' irregular arrival pattern during a day is one of the main causes of the long waiting time. Analysis and recommendations for reducing patient waiting time at the eye clinic are provided in this paper. simulation model of an eye clinic located in Singapore is used as the base case and the effects are quantified against the base model.

2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School is responsible for the intermediate phases of all pilot training for the Royal Canadian Air Force. The school's operation is stochastic and dynamic in nature and a resource allocation planning tool has been built to simulate the interactions of its various components. For example, it takes into account weather, aircraft, simulator and instructor availability, and student failure. This paper gives an overview of the school's operation, describes how it is simulated with a custom built C++ application and shows how the tool has been used to estimate average course duration, to determine what resources are the most significant bottlenecks and to study the impacts of significant proposed changes to the way pilots are trained. The tool was instrumental in showing that one resource was clearly responsible for creating bottlenecks and was used to analyze a few mitigation options.
