We consider the sequential allocation of differing weapons to a collection of adversarial targets with the goal of surviving to destroy a critical target within a combat simulation. The platform which carries the weapons proceeds through a set of sequential stages and at each stage potentially engages targets with available weapons. The decision space at each stage is affected by previous decisions and the probability of platform destruction. simulation and dynamic programming are then used within a larger dynamic programming framework to determine allocation strategies and develop value functions for these mission sets to be used in future, larger and more complexsimulations. A simple dynamic programming example of the problem is considered and used to generate a functional approximation for a more complex system. The developed methodology provides a tractable approach to addressing complex sequential allocation of resources within a risky environment.

A 300mm wafer fab is one of the most complex systems in the world. How to optimize this system in terms of planning and scheduling is critical for profitability of the semiconductor companies considering billions of dollars of initial investment involved. Line management or fab wide scheduling is more important than area level scheduling although the latter has higher resolution and is considered as a harder problem. Traditional line management policies focus on pre-determined bottlenecks and has proven to be successful. However, for a dynamic fab with changing bottlenecks, some potential issues have been discovered. This paper used simulation as a tool to study the issues involved and propose an improved line management policy.

Although research into simulation of construction continues to advance and thrive in the academic world, application of simulation in the construction industry remains limited. Stakeholders on construction projects have yet to adopt simulation as their default tool of choice for managing large complex projects, instead of traditional techniques, which are often inadequate. This paper describes the building of an asphalt paving simulator, as an example of the rigor and effort required in developing construction simulation models, and then briefly describes an alternative model building method currently being researched which may potentially make it easier and faster for stakeholders to quickly build simulation models on construction projects.

The resourcing environment facing businesses and governmental agencies is a complex hierarchy of interrelated decisions that span wide-ranging time horizons, where the outputs of one decision become the inputs for the next. For example, strategic resourcing decisions define multiyear, aggregate-level resource availability, which bounds the feasible region of tactical resource decisions. These tactical decisions (typically looking out over a year) disaggregate strategic resourcing decisions into a working level of resources necessary for conducting operations. Tactical decisions are themselves translated into more granular operational resource allocations. The challenge is to maintain the internal consistency of these resourcing decisions. This research describes how hierarchically integrated modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques can assist organizations with their resourcing decisions and ensure consistency across the relevant time horizons. We demonstrate how M&S enables a visualizing of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) employment so that support solutions can be tailored and operational effectiveness of organizational resourcing strategies can be maximized.

Large scale evacuations can be extremely complex, requiring tremendous coordination and logistical support. Noncombatant Evacuation Operations (NEOs) present additional challenges of civil unrest and violence that congests the transportation network and can require military assistance to execute the evacuation. NEOs contain many moving parts and simultaneous processes including thousands of evacuees, vehicles, aircraft, and personnel tracking technology. Discrete event simulation is a technique well suited to handle the complex interactions between the entities and to analyze the behavior of the system. This paper describes the methodology used to analyze NEO by the Center for Army Analysis (CAA) and presents a case study that illustrates how modeling can be used to evaluate various courses of action and support decision making. When preparing to execute a NEO, decision makers use simulation modeling and analysis to evaluate evacuation timelines, allocate resources and lift assets, select safe haven locations, and determine support requirements for evacuees.

Xerox has invented, tested, and implemented a novel class of operations-research-based productivity improvement offerings that has been described in Rai et al. (2009) and was a finalist in the 2008 Franz Edelman competition. The software toolkit that enables the optimization of print shops is data-driven and simulation based. It enables quick modeling of complex print production environments under the cellular production framework. The software toolkit automates several steps of the modeling process by taking declarative inputs from the end-user and then automatically generating complexsimulation models that are used to determine improved design and operating points. This paper describes the addition of another layer of automation consisting of simulation-based optimization using simulated-annealing that enables automated search of a large number of design alternatives in the presence of operational constraints to determine a cost-optimal solution. The results of the application of this approach to a real-world problem are also described.

Model verification and validation are defined, and why model verification and validation are important is discussed. The three approaches to deciding model validity are described. A graphical paradigm that shows how verification and validation are related to the model development process and a flowchart that shows how verification and validation is part of the model development process are presented and discussed. A recommended procedure for verification and validation is given.

The focus areas of our research are simulation and optimization of complex assembly lines for heavy machinery airplanes, turbines, industrial machines etc.). These production facilities have several specific characteristics: many isolated project networks with precedence constraints and thousands of multi-mode activities, time-bounds for activities and projects, many priority rules, limited numbers of multi-skilled resources with individual shift regimes, internal and subcontracted personnel, and resource locking rules. Formally, it is defined as a Multi-Mode Resource-Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem with activity splitting. A promising way of dealing with problems in this domain is simulation-based optimization. In this paper, we introduce a specific custom-built simulator designed for this problem domain. The tool supports a variety of real-world extensions and dedicated behavior which usually comes at enormous runtime and development cost when it has to be built into a commercial off-the-shelf simulation tool.

Manufacturing firms, particularly those in the chemical industry, typically employ risk management principles to identify, analyze, and prioritize risks that have the potential to cause significant property damage and business interruption to operating assets. These risks, which may exceed the firm's financial capacity post-loss, can be hedged using financial instruments in the insurance markets. Many firms design insurance programs to share the loss exposure;however characterization of the loss distributions and determination of the optimal coverage limits is more challenging. Few applied simulation models have been published in the open literature to address optimal insurance policies, despite the importance and value provided to shareholders. Consequently, corporate risk managers often rely on heuristics or past decisions to structure insurance programs during renewal periods. This simulation model considers the benefit of risk management given loss distributions specific to contract manufacturers and establishes a scientific approach for making optimal insurance policy decisions.

simulation is a powerful tool if understood and used properly. This introduction to simulation tutorial is designed to teach the basics of simulation, including structure, function, data generated, and its proper use. The introduction starts with a definition of simulation, goes through a talk about what makes up a simulation, how the simulation actually works, and how to handle data generated by the simulation. Throughout the paper, there is discussion on issues concerning the use of simulation in industry.
