Grand challenges are significant themes that can bring together researchers to bring significant change to a field. In 2012 a new initiative to restart the debate on major grand challenges for modeling and simulation (M&S) began. Leading researchers have presented M&S Grand Challenges in areas such as ubiquitous simulation, high performance computing, spatial simulation, big simulation, human behaviour, multidomain design, systems engineering, cyber systems, network simulation and education. To contribute further to this initiative, this paper presents M&S Grand Challenges from an Operational Research/Management Science (OR/MS) perspective and discusses themes including simulation in healthcare, value of information, data modeling, stochastic modeling and optimization, agent-based simulation and simulation analytics.

Screening methods are beneficial for studies involving simulations that have a large number of variables where a relatively small (but unknown) subset is important. In this paper, we show how a newly proposed Lasso-optimal screening design and analysis method can be useful for efficiently conducting simulation screening experiments. Our approach uses new criteria for generating supersaturated designs, and a new algorithm for selecting the optimal tuning parameters for Lasso model selection. We generate a 24x69 Lasso optimal supersaturated design, illustrate its potential with a numerical evaluation, and apply it to an agent-based simulation of maritime escort operations in the Strait of Gibraltar. This application is part of a larger project that seeks to leverage simulation models during the ship design process, and so construct ships that are both cost effective and operationally effective. The supersaturated screening design has already proved beneficial for model verification and validation.
While ontology deals with the question of being or existence, epistemology deals with the question of gaining knowledge. This panel addresses the challenge of how we gain knowledge from modeling and simulation. What i...

Location routing is a well known problem in which decisions about facility location and vehicle routing must be made. Traditionally, a fixed size or capacity is assigned to an open facility as the input parameter to the problem. However, real-world cases show that decision-makers usually have a set of size options. If this size is selected accurately according to the demand of allocated customers, then location decisions and routing activities would raise smaller cost. Nevertheless, choosing this size implies additional variables that make an already NP-hard problem even more challenging. In addition, considering stochastic demands contributes to making the optimization problem more difficult to solve. Hence, a simheuristic algorithm is proposed in this work. It combines the efficiency of metaheuristics and the capabilities of simulation to deal with uncertainty. A series of computational experiments show that our approach can efficiently deal with medium-large instances.

An agent-based hardware-in-the-loop simulation framework is proposed to model the UAV/UGV surveillance and crowd control system. To this end, a planning and control system architecture is discussed first, which includes various modules such as sensory data collection, crowd detection, tracking, motion planning, control command generation, and control strategy evaluation. The modules that are highly related with agent-based modeling (focus of this paper) are then discussed, which includes the UAV/UGV motion planning considering multi-objectives, crowd motion modeling via social force model, and enhancement of simulation environment via GIS 3D coordinates conversion. In the experiment, Repast Simphony is used as the agent-based modeling tool, which transmits sensory data and control commands with QGroundControl as hardware interface that further conducts radio communications with ArduCopter as a real UAV. Preliminary results show that finer grid scale and larger vehicle detection range generate a better crowd coverage percentage. Finally, conclusions and future works are discussed.

This paper describes a methodology for solving Parameter Design (PD) problems in production and business systems of considerable complexity. The solution is aimed at determining optimum settings to system critical parameters so that each system response is at its optimum performance level with least amount of variability. When approaching such problem, analysts are often faced with four major challenges: representing the complex parameter design problem, utilizing an effective search method that is able to explore the problem's complex and large domain, making optimization decisions based on multiple and, often, conflicting objectives, and handling the stochastic variability of in system response as an integral part of the search method. to tackle such challenges, this paper proposes a solution methodology that integrates four state-of-the-art modules of proven methods: simulation Modeling (SM), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Entropy Method (EM), and Robustness Module (RM).

Since the early 1990s, organizations have focused on making smarter decisions in their integrated supply chain central planning, but the representation of capacity and cycle time has remained static and linear in contrast to its complex nature. This includes central planning for firms with semiconductor fabrication facilities (FABS) as a component of a complex demand supply network(DSN) where much of the complexity is non-FAB. Developing more intelligent solutions for capacity in central planning within computational and process limitations is a critical challenge. For DSNs with FABS, twin challenges are tool deployment and the operating curve. Many in the FAB community are aware of these complexities;options proposed and some implemented within "aggregate FAB planning," rarely within central planning. This tutorial reviews the current state of central planning with respect to capacity and cycle time, outlines the challenges these complexities place on central planning structures, and indicates possible solutions

Lean and simulation analysis are driven by the same objective, how to better design and improve processes making the companies more competitive. The adoption of lean has been widely spread in companies from public to private sectors and simulation is nowadays becoming more and more popular. Several authors have pointed out the benefits of combining simulation and lean, however, they are still rarely used together in practice. Optimization as an additional technique to this combination is even a more powerful approach especially when designing and improving complex processes with multiple conflicting objectives. This paper presents the mutual benefits that are gained when combining lean, simulation and optimization and how they overcome each other's limitations. A framework including the three concepts, some of the barriers for its implementation and a real-world industrial example are also described.

simulation has overcome critical obstacles to become a valuable method for obtaining insights about the behavior of complex systems. George Box's famous assessment that "all models are wrong, some are useful" referred to statistical models, but should now be reimagined to reflect that many simulation models are "right enough" to aid in decision making for important practical problems. Over the past fifty years, simulation has transformed from its beginnings as a brute-force numerical integration method into an attractive and sophisticated option for decision makers. This is due, in part, to the exponential growth of computing power. Although other analytic approaches also benefit from this trend, keyword searches of several scholarly search engines reveal that the reliance on simulation is increasing more rapidly. A descriptive analysis paints a compelling picture: simulation is frequently a researcher's preferred method for supporting decision makers and may often be the "first resort" for complex real world issues.

simulation has many advantages in modeling complex systems to facilitate decision making. In this research, an integrated computer system will be developed which incorporates an agent-based discrete event simulator, a geographic information system, a rule base, and interactive databases in addition to interfaces and other supporting components. The modules will seamlessly communicate with each other by exchanging a progression of data, and making a series of deductive decisions through embedded algorithms. This integrated system will be applied to disaster management planning and training and is designated Dynamic Discrete Disaster Decision simulation System ((DS2)-S-4). Here we address Phase I system implementation issues of (DS2)-S-4 which is under development.
