This study presents an integrated framework for evaluation of different policy scenarios in complex System-of-Systems. The proposed framework uses a bottom-up approach and hybrid simulation paradigms to model the micro-dynamics of a System-of-Systems and to investigate the desired policy outcomes. The application of the proposed framework is presented in the evaluation of financing policies in infrastructure System-of-Systems in which a hybrid agent-based/system dynamics platform was created to model the micro-behaviors of different entities affecting the level of investment. The created model provides a platform for conducting scenario analysis and investigating the landscape of desired policy outcomes. The results show that the proposed framework facilitates: (1) investigation of the impacts of the adaptive behaviors of different entities as well as the uncertainties; and (2) identification of the highly likely scenarios which lead to the desired policy outcomes.

In the FAB industries, key objectives of planning and scheduling might be 1) to meet the due date, 2) reduce the cycle time and 3) maximize machine utilization. MozArt has played a vital role in achieving the goals mentioned above in Korean semiconductor and display manufacturers. Its backward planning (pegging) engine finds the progress for each demand, while forward planning (loading simulation) engine considers factory capacity. Several experiences and practices including what-if simulation scenario will be discussed.

The development and use of computationally intensive, simulation-based methods is at the core of modern clinical trial designs. simulations are key to evaluate operating characteristics of alternative options and analytical methods, some of the latter such as Bayesian modeling can be computationally intensive in their own right. In this talk, I will present a case study of a large Phase III trial involving multiple end-points of different measurement types. Through simulation, I will show modeling time-response of the compound can boost power of the final analysis, how different strategies of multiplicity control compare against each other, and how interim analysis can mitigate the risk of trial failure.

We propose a new integrated multi-agent simulation environment "FUSE" which is designed for hierarchical organization behavior modeling. Recently, multi-agent simulations are getting more important in many fields such as planning of a large-scale disaster evacuation and military operations (Cil 2010, Nakajima 2008, Persons 2005). Since such simulations are characterized that they are composed of multiple of heterogeneous organizations, and the number of agents is very large, we have to provide an effective and efficient simulation environment. We have focused on a decision making model of organizations in the real world (Kuramoto 2012), and have implemented FUSE in Java. We have also proposed CaSPA which is based on a goal directed reasoning algorithm, and implemented reasoning rules in Java to show the basic functionality. Moreover, we have expanded foreign language interface to FUSE, and implemented CaSPA's reasoning rules in JRuby to show the applicability and expandability of CaSPA.

simulation has become an important method that is widely used in studying the propagation behaviors during the process of viral advertisement diffusion. With the increased computing and memory resources required for large-scale network processing, General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) have been used in high performance computing platforms to accelerate simulation performance. In this paper, we show optimized simulation strategies of viral advertisement diffusion on a Multi-GPU system. Using our proposed simulation strategies, we examine the spread of viral advertisements over a realistic social network with different tolerance thresholds. We also investigate the effect of different initial nodes selection policies in maximizing the performance of advertisement diffusion. According to our simulation studies of viral advertisement diffusion, we can observe that the number of initial selected nodes is important to the diffusion behaviors. However, we also note that the initial selection policy plays a limited role in the final result of viral advertisement diffusion. Finally, we discuss improved viral advertising strategies that use mass marketing first to increase the willingness of accepting a product and apply viral marketing to facilitate the maximization of advertisement diffusion.

This work aims to investigate the role of individual scientists and their collaborations in enhancing the innovative performance of the Canadian nanotechnology innovation network. The study uses real data that consists of all the journal articles in nanotechnology field published within 1980-2012 by the authors affiliated to Canadian institutions, which were collected from Scopus database. The scientific networks have been created based on the co-authorship of the articles and an agent-based simulation model has been developed to study the innovation networks in their dynamic context. This research argues that the individual performance of authors with different network properties distinctively affect the overall efficiency and structure of the network.

Information shared through online social networking platforms is spread from user to user. Although some researchers have argued that this phenomenon can unfold similarly to an epidemic, others have found that information disseminates within a narrow range, propagating only a few levels in a communication network. In an effort to resolve these conflicting findings, we developed an information cascade model to conduct a variance-based global sensitivity analysis (GSA) to determine the influence of two network attributes on the diffusion of energy saving information. The simulation results of the base model showed that energy saving information failed to generate deep cascades. Also, the results from the GSA demonstrated that network density and the number of an initiator's connections had limited influence on information cascades. These findings suggest that massive network structures and a large number of potential recipients do not engender deep cascades of energy saving information in online social networks.

In the modern manufacturing industry, environmental considerations are part of numerous phases of production. Inappropriate production lot-size determination can generate substantial scrapped overdue stocks and idle processing, which lead to serious environmental burdens. In this paper, by simulating the Pull mode and back scheduling of a multi-variety and small-batch production system, large overstocks and other wastes caused by current production lot-size determination are traced. For comparison with the conventional cost accounting used in the original simulation model, a new environmental management accounting method, Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA), is introduced to identify negative products cost related to environmental impacts hidden in the production processes. After sensitivity analysis by gradually regulating the production lot-size, two regular changes in the negative products cost and the corresponding percentages in the total cost are observed. These change trends indicate that a reasonable determination strategy for production lot-size can improve both economic and environmental performances.

This paper identifies construction constraints for a constraint simulation of a construction flow. Therefore the construction environment and the methodologies of scheduling in construction are analyzed. Typical characteristics of construction schedules are classified. The relationship between different activities or between activities and building elements or between different building elements are examples for identified classes. With these characteristic construction schedules of real construction projects are analyzed. The results of this survey of construction schedules and the identified strategies of construction methods are presented in this paper in order to understand the process of scheduling. Based on that, the results of constraint based scheduling simulation can be improved a lot. Additionally, the reliability of construction schedules can be improved. Thru the productivity in construction can be increased.

The Black Box simulation Tool allows non-experts to tap into the power of discrete event simulation in Automod through the use of an Excel spreadsheet. A simplified way to create simulations can provide quicker results while maintaining a high-level of analysis capability. The model is developed as a generic 'process loop' model with the user-defined inputs creating a time-based virtual environment rather than one based on conveyors, vehicles, queues, etc. With its roots in machining processes, the tool has also been successfully used to model automotive paint shops, weld shops and engine assembly lines. The tool has also been used for proof-of-concept and proof-of-theory examples.
