The Black Box simulation Tool allows non-experts to tap into the power of discrete event simulation in Automod through the use of an Excel spreadsheet. A simplified way to create simulations can provide quicker results while maintaining a high-level of analysis capability. The model is developed as a generic 'process loop' model with the user-defined inputs creating a time-based virtual environment rather than one based on conveyors, vehicles, queues, etc. With its roots in machining processes, the tool has also been successfully used to model automotive paint shops, weld shops and engine assembly lines. The tool has also been used for proof-of-concept and proof-of-theory examples.

In the FAB industries, key objectives of planning and scheduling might be 1) to meet the due date, 2) reduce the cycle time and 3) maximize machine utilization. MozArt has played a vital role in achieving the goals mentioned above in Korean semiconductor and display manufacturers. Its backward planning (pegging) engine finds the progress for each demand, while forward planning (loading simulation) engine considers factory capacity. Several experiences and practices including what-if simulation scenario will be discussed.

Sasol, an integrated energy and chemicals company based in South Africa, leads the world in the production of liquid fuels from natural gas and coal. A by-products of the coal-to-liquid (CTL) process is converted into polymers via a monomer value chain. The CTL plant runs independently from the value chain, resulting in significant feed stream variations which must be accommodated. The profitability of the whole value chain can be increased by a combination of improved availability and increased capacity of combinations of value chain components. A stochastic simulation model is used to determine the best solution from a number of solutions. The whole value chain is modeled as a continuous process. The presentation focus on the challenges faced while building the model, such as recycle streams and optimal stream allocation with the current modeling methodology. A solution is then discussed, while simultaneously demonstrating the ability of the simulation method.

Agent-based simulation (ABS) is an approach to modeling systems comprised of individual, autonomous, interacting "agents." Agent-based modeling offers ways to more easily model individual behaviors and how behaviors affect others in ways that have not been available before. There is much interest in developing agent-based models for many application problem domains. Applications range from modeling agent behavior in supply chains and the stock market, to predicting the success of marketing campaigns and the spread of epidemics, to projecting the future needs of the healthcare system. Progress in the area suggests that ABS promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that businesses use computers to support decision-making and researchers use agent-based models as electronic laboratories to aid in discovery. This brief tutorial introduces agent-based modeling and simulation by describing the basic ideas of ABS, discussing some applications, and addressing methods for developing agent-based models.

Potash mining is characterized by high sensitivity of production volume to many non-linear factors such as maintenance synchronization, mine preparation works schedule and layout of bunkers and conveyors network. This caused the decision to use simulation-based approach for determining the process bottlenecks and evaluation of proposed improvements. Adequate simulation of mining process required high level of detail in the model which negatively affected its performance. By modeling continuous operations (bunker filling and conveyor transportation) purely with discrete agent-based approach we reached the acceptable modeling speed allowing to simulate 1 year of mine operations in 20 minutes of real time on a PC. The model developed by Amalgama for Ernst&Young consultants allowed them to suggest and prove mining process optimizations yielding in 12-15% increase of production for a world-leading potash producer.

This paper describes the process of developing a hybrid simulation model for a disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common cause of sight loss in people aged over 65. The model is implemented in the software AnyLogic, and combines discrete-event and agent-based simulation. Embedded in each agent there is also an individual compartmental model for disease progression. The overall aim of the hybrid model was to use the specific example of AMD to explore the wider links between the health and social care systems in the UK. We discuss the challenges of model development and the rationale for our modelling decisions, and reflect upon the advantages and disadvantages of using a hybrid model in this case.

When we make operational decisions for high-tech manufacturing with products having short life times, there exist various challenges: (1) high uncertainty in the supply, production and demand; (2) limited amount of valid historical data; and (3) decision makers with a risk-averse attitude. We propose a simulation-based prediction framework to support real-time decision making. Specifically, we consider a generalized two-stage dynamic decision model accounting for both input uncertainty and system inherent stochastic uncertainty. Since the risk-adjusted cost objective involves nested risk measures, it could be computationally prohibitive to precisely estimate the system performance, especially for complex stochastic systems. Given a decision policy, in this paper, a metamodel-assisted approach is introduced to efficiently assess the system risk performance in the planning horizon, while delivering a credible interval quantifying the simulation estimation error. This information can guide us to select a good policy for real-time decision making.

This paper presents a literature survey on recent use of discrete-event simulation in real-world manufacturing logistics decision-making. The sample of the survey consists of 52 relevant application papers from recent wintersimulationconference proceedings. We investigated what decisions were supported by the applications, case company characteristics, some methodological issues, and the software tools used. We found that the majority of applications has been reported in production plant design and in the evaluation of production policies, lot sizes, WIP levels and production plans/schedules. Findings also suggest that general-purpose DES software tools are suitable in most of these cases. For different possible reasons, few applications for multi-echelon supply chain decision-making have been reported. Software requirements for supply chain simulations also seem to differ slightly from those for established application areas. The applications described were carried out in a variety of different industries, with a clear predominance in the semiconductor and automotive industries

Emergency department (ED) expansion and redesign is a complex design task which must take into account many operational processes (current and proposed) as well a projected changes in the system, e.g., patient volume. Discrete event simulation (DES) is a tool to aid the decision making process by simulating these processes;however, it's typically used in the operations or early design stages before many decisions are made about layout, capacity, and new processes. Later in the design process, the use of simulation can provide an avenue for what-if scenario testing of layout and programmatic changes. This presentation presents an initial discrete event simulation analysis of various layout options during the schematic design stage of an ED expansion project and provides a brief overview of future research directions evaluating decision making using discrete event simulation and visualization simulation.

simulation has become an important method that is widely used in studying the propagation behaviors during the process of viral advertisement diffusion. With the increased computing and memory resources required for large-scale network processing, General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) have been used in high performance computing platforms to accelerate simulation performance. In this paper, we show optimized simulation strategies of viral advertisement diffusion on a Multi-GPU system. Using our proposed simulation strategies, we examine the spread of viral advertisements over a realistic social network with different tolerance thresholds. We also investigate the effect of different initial nodes selection policies in maximizing the performance of advertisement diffusion. According to our simulation studies of viral advertisement diffusion, we can observe that the number of initial selected nodes is important to the diffusion behaviors. However, we also note that the initial selection policy plays a limited role in the final result of viral advertisement diffusion. Finally, we discuss improved viral advertising strategies that use mass marketing first to increase the willingness of accepting a product and apply viral marketing to facilitate the maximization of advertisement diffusion.
