Outpatient surgery scheduling involves the coordination of several activities in an uncertain environment. Due to the very customized nature of surgical procedures there is significant uncertainty in the duration of activities related to the intake process, surgical procedure, and recovery process. Furthermore, there are multiple criteria which must be traded off when considering how to schedule surgical procedures including patient waiting, operating room (OR) team waiting, OR idling, and overtime for the surgical suite. Uncertainty combined with the need to tradeoff many criteria makes scheduling a complex task for OR managers. In this article we present a simulation model for a multiple OR surgical suite, describe some of the scheduling challenges, and illustrate how the model can be used as a decisions aid to improve strategic and operational decision making relating to the delivery of surgical services. All results presented are based on real data collected at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

The challenges associated with understanding Climate Change (CC) and subsequent socio-technical solutions stem from the complexity and uncertainties inherent within the mechanisms, magnitudes and temporal nature of the environment. Modelling & simulation (M&S) has flourished as an enabling technology providing insight into the intricacies of Climate Change as well as facilitating understanding regarding the social and ecological implications of these changes. In addition, M&S has been instrumental in influencing decision making across many domains. The application of M&S to garner understanding of complex environmental behaviour often predicates the requirement to integrate various models and simulations. High Level Architecture (HLA) is a software architecture for constructing distributed simulations. It facilitates interoperability among different simulations and simulation types and promotes reuse of simulation software modules making it a very attractive option for M&S applications such as that within the CC domain. As the impact of the application of M&S transcends the virtual world', the danger of adverse effects of erroneous or unsuitable models or simulation results also increases. The application of Verification and Validation (V&V) of models and simulation results are intended to ensure that only correct and suitable models and simulation results are used. Although individual models may have been V&V, there integration within an HLA framework may result in a simulation behaviour that yields inaccurate results and thereby creates a condition such that decisions and actions would be based on invalid results. Under the auspices of the NATO Modelling and simulation Group (NMSG) 19 and simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) Product Development Group (PDG), a VV&A overlay for the HLA Federation Development and Execution Process (FEDEP) in accordance with IEEE 1516.3 has been developed. This paper presents the key concepts of this VV&A overlay.

This paper presents a literature survey on recent use of discrete-event simulation in real-world manufacturing logistics decision-making. The sample of the survey consists of 52 relevant application papers from recent winter simulation conference proceedings. We investigated what decisions were supported by the applications, case company characteristics, some methodological issues, and the software tools used. We found that the majority of applications has been reported in production plant design and in the evaluation of production policies, lot sizes, WIP levels and production plans/schedules. Findings also suggest that general-purpose DES software tools are suitable in most of these cases. For different possible reasons, few applications for multi-echelon supply chain decision-making have been reported. Software requirements for supply chain simulations also seem to differ slightly from those for established application areas. The applications described were carried out in a variety of different industries, with a clear predominance in the semiconductor and automotive industries

Supply chain transformation is an emerging service area in the market which aims at helping clients improve their operational efficiency and reduce costs. As a generic technique for the analysis of complex and dynamic systems, simulation could play an important role in this field. This paper presents a case study showing how simulation could be the key enablement for a supply chain transformation project. A methodology and tool developed by IBM China Research Lab has been applied in this joint project with a world-class supplier of home improvement tools. By applying simulation, the client is provided an insightful view about their business processes and inventory allocation strategy, which serves as the basis for the transformation implementation. Financial results show that simulation has addressed the key issues and provided the client accountable evaluation results for decision-making

Decision makers in ports and airports are working in an extremely complex environment. decisions involve multiple actors, who all have a different view on the system under investigation, and on the effectiveness and desirability of possible outcomes of the decision making process. simulation and visualization are two core technologies to support these complex decision making processes. One of the major challenges is to provide the variety of involved actors with visualizations that fit their view on the system. Two case studies show that the visualizations should be able to provide two views on decision making: a view on the system under investigation and a view on the multi-actor decision making process itself. This paper presents the requirements for a service-oriented and web-based simulation and visualization portal, which integrates both views. In cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam we are currently developing and testing a prototype implementation of the portal.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has become increasingly reliant on models and in particular on simulation models. The military-defense establishment and its combat-preparation orientation is one of the most complex systems in existence, particularly in the extremely dynamic modern world. simulation models form the basis for analyses spanning issues ranging from force structuring to acquisition prioritization. These analyses, and the subsequent decisions they support, mold and shape the DoD thereby influencing the posture of the US defense establishment. This panel brings together a set of the military's influential decision makers directly involved in the development and use of simulation models. The panel will discuss their cur-rent and anticipated needs for the future of simulation and pose the challenges the simulation community must meet to ensure those future needs are met.

There continues to be increasing interest from a broad range of disciplines in agent-based and artificial life simulations. This includes the Department of Defense - which uses simulations heavily in its decision making process. Indeed, military conflicts can have many attributes that are consistent with complex adaptive systems - such as many entities interacting with some degree of autonomy, each of which is continually making decisions to satisfy a variety of sometimes conflicting objectives. In this paper, we present three applications of agent-based simulations used to analyze military problems. The first uses the MANA model to explore the ability of the U.S. Army's network-based Future Force to perform with degraded communications. The second studies how unmanned surface vehicles can be used in force protection missions with the Pythagoras model. The last example examines the standard Army squad size with an integrated effort using MANA, Pythagoras, and the high-resolution simulation JANUS.
