This paper introduces simulation using Diffusion process (SimDiff), a novel framework for automated modeling and generation of stochastic discrete-event simulation (DES) input distributions, addressing the high entry barrier and challenges associated with obtaining accurate input data. Traditional DES models often rely on simplifying assumptions, such as Poisson and Exponential distributions, which may not fully capture the complexity of real-world systems. We propose SimDiff to overcome these limitations by utilizing the denoising probabilistic diffusion model, a generative neural network capable of learning complex statistical distributions and efficiently sampling from them. Additionally, we introduce SimDiff-ConvTrans, an extension that incorporates Transformer and Convolution components for simulating non-i.i.d inputs. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of SimDiff in handling simple and hybrid data distributions, as well as empirical datasets. SimDiff represents a significant advancement in simplifying the stochastic simulation process, making it more accessible and efficient for users across various expertise levels.

Most of the Indian urban roads are bi-directional in nature consists of mix up of different vehicle types with weak lane discipline. A mathematical or analytical treatment of such condition is found infeasible due to its complex nature. Hence, simulation has become inevitable tool for analysis and interpretation of such real world situations. There are only few studies which focuses exclusively on developing a bidirectional traffic simulation model considering the longitudinal and lateral behaviour of vehicles for urban undivided roads. With the above motivation, the present study focuses on development of simulation models for bi-directional mixed traffic flow using object oriented programming (OOP) concepts. The proposed model would be of significant assistance to traffic engineers while making key decisions in traffic control and management policies.

Impala Platinum Limited mining operations focus on one of the largest known deposits of platinum group metals (PGMs) in the world, namely the Bushveld complex in South Africa. Impala is investigating the feasibility of a planned expansion of their operations, specifically a new vertical mega shaft system incorporating innovative mining methods. Dynamic simulation modeling toolkits were developed in an object orientated environment for rapid application during the feasibility analysis of the logistics involved with the shaft system. The logistic models address the complete mining process, including materials handling operations underground and on surface (therefore incorporating hoisting, rail transport, truck haulage, conveyors, etc.). SAMS provide Impala with valuable decision making and what if analysis. This presentation provides an overview of SAMS applied to Impala Platinum requirements and demonstration of the modeling toolkits.

When scheduling multi-period medical treatments for patients with cancer, medical committees have to consider a large amount of data, variables, sanitary and budget constraints, as well as probabilistic elements. In many hospitals worldwide, medical specialists regularly decide the optimal schedule of treatments to be assigned to patients by considering multiple periods and the number of available resources. Hence, decisions have to be made upon the priority of each patient, available treatments, their expected effects, the proper order and intensity in which they should be applied. Consequently, medical experts have to assess many possible combinations and, eventually, choose the one that maximizes the survival chances or expected life quality of patients. To support this complex decision-making process, this paper introduces a novel methodology that combines a biased-randomized heuristic with simulation, to return 'elite' alternatives to experts. A simplified yet illustrative case study shows the main concepts and potential of the proposed approach.

The challenges associated with understanding Climate Change (CC) and subsequent socio-technical solutions stem from the complexity and uncertainties inherent within the mechanisms, magnitudes and temporal nature of the environment. Modelling & simulation (M&S) has flourished as an enabling technology providing insight into the intricacies of Climate Change as well as facilitating understanding regarding the social and ecological implications of these changes. In addition, M&S has been instrumental in influencing decision making across many domains. The application of M&S to garner understanding of complex environmental behaviour often predicates the requirement to integrate various models and simulations. High Level Architecture (HLA) is a software architecture for constructing distributed simulations. It facilitates interoperability among different simulations and simulation types and promotes reuse of simulation software modules making it a very attractive option for M&S applications such as that within the CC domain. As the impact of the application of M&S transcends the 'virtual world', the danger of adverse effects of erroneous or unsuitable models or simulation results also increases. The application of Verification and Validation (V&V) of models and simulation results are intended to ensure that only correct and suitable models and simulation results are used. Although individual models may have been V&V, there integration within an HLA framework may result in a simulation behaviour that yields inaccurate results and thereby creates a condition such that decisions and actions would be based on invalid results. Under the auspices of the NATO Modelling and simulation Group (NMSG) 19 and simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) Product Development Group (PDG), a VV&A overlay for the HLA Federation Development and Execution Process (FEDEP) in accordance with IEEE 1516.3 has been developed. For the problems related to market equilibrium in complex market environments, analyses are conducted in the past, using some mathematical models and the game theory. These methods are based on the economic structural equations themselves, ignoring the interactions between economic subjects, and the hypothesis of subject homogeneity has no reference in the real world. On contrast, this paper proposes a multi-agent simulation model, from the microscopic point of view. In such simulation, agents interact with each other, and the decisions are made by agent-embedded AI systems, the Q-network. Therefore, there is no need to elaborate the behavioral rule for each agent, or manually set up too many assumptions. This paper assumes that the simulated market operates in a hypothetical way, in which there are two types of economic entities, namely, banks and enterprises. Banks and enterprises lending behaviors lead to a symbiotic relationship between the banks and the enterprises, while business-to-business transactions make the enterprises symbiotically compete with each other. In the experiment, the observed behavior of each agent can be reasonably explained. Agents endogenously generate intelligent behavioral patterns compatible with the environment. Therefore, this AI-based method can replace the artificially designated decision-making strategy in simulations of market, thus facilitating related economic researches.

In this work, the formation control based on dynamic game evolution under the mixed strategies is proposed. Different from the general formation control and collision avoidance, here agents are independent and make decisions in a distributed way. The motion states of the agent are determined by strategy selection and evolution. We investigate how the agents accomplish the formation with less loss and fewer steps. Firstly, the fixation probabilities and proportions of different strategies under the different circumstances are analyzed. Then, we discuss the evolution processes and formation completions which vary with the collision cost according to the simulation results. Moreover, we extend our model to a larger scale, that is increasing the intensity of population in a fixed region, to study a more complex system. In our framework, we analyze how evolutionary stable strategy emerges and how formation control finishes better in the population. Our results provide some innovative ideas on achieving formation control and collision avoidance based on evolutionary game in the real world.

The Songhua River Pollution Control Project is one of the most significant water-related environmental pollution control schemes in Northeastern China. This paper details the requirements, architecture, and main components of an online river sudden pollution simulation system (RSPSS) for scientific planning and decision making for a complicated natural river network. On the basis of a service-oriented method and spatiotemporal simulation technology, the following components are developed: multi-platform, multi-level, dynamic, and flexible data services; task services that can be used by other online ArcGIS Server Silverlight Projects; and integrated third-party hydrodynamic and water quality models, which can simulate complex river networks under natural hydrological and climatic conditions online. With the RSPSS, spatial and non-spatial datasets and functions are seamlessly integrated from distributed sources by standard services. Thus, this system can support effective cross-regional and cross-departmental decisions. A study of a real-world implementation of the suggested system involving the historical sudden pollution of the Songhua River based on the RSPSS is also presented.

One of the goals of Industry 4.0 is the adoption of data-driven models to enhance various aspects of the manufacturing process, such as monitoring equipment conditions, ensuring product quality, detecting failures, and preparing optimal maintenance plans. However, many machine-learning algorithms require a large amount of training data to reach desired performance. In numerous industrial applications, such data is either not available or its acquisition is a costly process. In such cases, simulation frameworks are employed to replicate the behavior of real-world facilities and generate data for further analysis. simulation frameworks typically provide high-quality data but are often slow which can be problematic when real-time decision-making is required. Control approaches based on simulation-based data commonly face challenges related to inflexibility, particularly in dynamic production environments undergoing frequent reconfiguration and upgrades. This paper introduces a method that seeks to strike a balance between the reliance on simulated data and the limited robustness of simulation-based control methods. This balance is achieved by supplementing available data with additional expert knowledge, enabling the matching of similar data sources and their combination for reuse. Furthermore, we augment the methods with an explainability layer, facilitating collaboration between the human expert and the AI system, leading to informed and actionable decisions. The performance of the proposed solution is demonstrated through a case study on gas production from an underground reservoir resulting in reduced downtime, heightened process reliability, and enhanced overall performance. This paper builds upon our conference paper (Kuk et al., 2023), addressing the same problem with an extended, more generic methodology, and presenting entirely new results.

This paper proposes a Systems Modeling Language (SysML)-based simulation model aggregation framework to develop aggregated simulation models with high accuracy. The framework consists of three major steps: 1) system conceptual modeling, 2) simulation modeling, and 3) additive regression model-based parameter estimation. SysML is first used to construct the system conceptual model for a generic seedling propagation system in terms of system structure and activities in a hierarchical manner (i.e. low, medium and high levels). simulation models conforming to the conceptual model are then constructed in Arena. An additive regression model-based approach is proposed to estimate parameters for the aggregated simulation model. The proposed framework is demonstrated via one of the largest grafted seedling propagation systems in North America. The results reveal that 1) the proposed framework allows us to construct accurate but computationally affordable simulation models for seedling propagation system, and 2) model aggregation increases the randomness of simulation outputs.
