Macro-scale simulation has been advanced as one tool for application-architecture co-design to express operation of exascale systems. These simulations approximate the behavior of system components, trading off accuracy for increased evaluation speed. Application skeletons serve as the vehicle for these simulations, but they require accurately capturing the execution behavior of computation. The complexity of application codes, the heterogeneity of the platforms, and the increasing importance of simulating multiple performance metrics (e. g., execution time, energy) require new modeling techniques. We propose flexible statistical models to increase the fidelity of application simulation at scale. We present performance model validation for several exascale mini-applications that leverage a variety of parallel programming frameworks targeting heterogeneous architectures for both time and energy performance metrics. When paired with these statistical models, application skeletons were simulated on average 12.5 times faster than the original application incurring only 6.08% error, which is 12.5% faster and 33.7% more accurate than baseline models.

The usefulness of the generalized computational model of Term Graph Rewriting Systems (TGRS) for designing and implementing concurrent object-oriented languages, and also for specifying and reasoning about the interaction between concurrency and object-orientation (such as concurrent synchronization of methods or interference problems between concurrency and inheritance), is examined in this paper by mapping a state-of-the-art functional object-oriented language onto the MONSTR computational model, a restricted form of TGRS specifically designed to act as a point of reference in the design and implementation of declarative and semi-declarative programming languages especially suited for distributed architectures.

Functional programming languages are well suited to the expression and automatic mapping of parallel computations. The Paradigm compiler is being developed to automatically analyze and map a class of Sisal programs amenable to static analysis for execution by distributed computer systems. A program description tree is constructed to represent the source program. In this form, the program is transformed into a hierarchy of acyclic interconnections of program modules (code blocks) of two basic types: array generators and stream producers. The program description tree is then used to guide decisions about allocation of processing elements to code blocks, and to construct of code for a target multiprocessor. We discuss the problem of finding an optimal allocation (mapping), and illustrate the methodology using a practical signal processing example.

This paper presents extensions to ALPHA, a language based upon the formalism of affine recurrence equations (AREs). These extensions address the need for parametric and structured systems of such AREs. Similar to, but more general as the map operator of classical functional languages, the ALPHA structuration techniques provide a dense and powerful description of complex systems referencing each other. Such structured systems of AREs may be interpreted as (or translated into) sequential function calls, hierarchical hardware description, or any SIMD flavour of structured programming. With the help of examples, we give an overview of these techniques, and their substitution semantics based on the homomorphic extension of convex polyhedra and affine functions.

Problems arising due to run existent software in parallel computer systems are considered. The problem may be formulated as the serial programs should be analyzed first and then through modification of them are to be brought in to make them able to run in parallel computers. The problems that arise have been analyzed and ways to tackle them are given. The structure of programming package is given. It is substantiated that for most sequential programs the major share of time spent for their execution is accounted for by processing loops. Three loop parallelization methods have been selected for implementation of programs: method of coordinates, method of linear transformations, and modified method of linear-piece parallelization. The dependence graph construction principles are expounded and scheduling methods are enumerated. Having been solved tasks for parallel program generation are presented.

This paper describes the integration of nested data parallelism into imperative languages using the example of C. Unlike flat data parallelism, nested data parallelism directly provides means for handling irregular data structures and certain forms of control parallelism, such as divide-and-conquer algorithms, thus enabling the programmer to express such algorithms far more naturally. Existing work deals with nested data parallelism in a functional environment, which does help avoid a set of problems, but makes efficient implementations more complicated. Moreover, functional languages are not readily accepted by programmers used to languages, such as Fortran and C, which are currently predominant in programming parallel machines. In this paper, we introduce the imperative data-parallel language V and give an overview of its implementation.

Novel architectures for massively parallel machines offer better scalability and the prospect of achieving linear speedup for sizable problems in many domains. The development of suitable programming models and accompanying software tools for these architectures remains one of the biggest challenges towards exploiting their full potential. We present a multi-layer software abstraction model to develop combinatorial solvers on massively-parallel machines with regular topologies. The model enables different challenges in the design and optimization of combinatorial solvers to be tackled independently (separation of concerns) while permitting problem-specific tuning and crosslayer optimization. In specific, the model decouples the issues of inter-node communication, node-level scheduling, problem mapping, mesh-level load balancing and expressing problem logic. We present an implementation of the model and use it to profile a Boolean satisfiability solver on simulated massively-parallel machines with different scales and topologies.

The new era of multi-core processing challenges software designers to efficiently exploit the parallelism that is now massively available. Programmers have to exchange the conventional sequential programming paradigm for parallel programming: single-threaded designs must be decomposed into dependent, interacting tasks. The Java programming language has built-in thread support and is therefore suitable for the development of parallel software, but programming multi-threaded applications is a tedious task. Therefore we are working on a framework and tool support to alleviate the burden of threads, synchronisation and locking, based on process networks. This paper describes our initial ideas for this new programming model.

Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN) have gained a wide acceptance as a modeling tool for the performance analysis of concurrent systems. However, the applicability of this methodology is severely limited by the potential state space explosion phenomenon. In this paper we describe massively parallel approaches to the most computing-intensive part of the solution of GSPN models: the state space construction. The effectiveness of these parallel approaches stays, for every GSPN, in their ability to deal with very large reachability spaces in reasonable time. Both the SIMD and the MIMD programming models are considered, and examples are given using recent massively parallel processing architectures (CM-5, T3D).

In this paper, implementation possibilities of a synchronous binary neural model for solving optimization problems in massively parallel hardware are studied. It is argued that synchronous, as opposed to asynchronous models are best suited to the general characteristics of massively parallel architectures. In this study the massively parallel target device is the BSP400 (Brian style processor with 400 nodes). The updating of the nodes in the BSP400 is synchronous and the nodes can only process local data (i.e., activations). The synchronous models studied were introduced by Takefuji [7] and make use of both local and global operators. The functionality of these operators with regard to the quality of the solutions was examined through software simulations. Fully digital neurocomputers such as the BSP400 offer sufficient flexibility for programming local operations on node level. The possibilities of translating the function of global operators into local operations were also studied. The aim of this study is to combine massively parallel hardware with synchronous neural networks models for optimization problems in order to get both high speed and high quality of the solutions.
