Although Java was not specifically designed for the computationally intensive numeric applications that are the typical fodder of highly parallel machines, its widespread popularity and portability make it an interesting candidate vehicle for massively parallel programming. With the advent of high-performance optimizing Java compilers, the open question is: How can Java programs best exploit massive parallelism? The authors have been contemplating this question via libraries of Java-routines for specifying and coordinating parallel codes. It would be most desirable to have these routines written in 100%-Pure Java; however, a more expedient solution is to provide Java wrappers (stubs) to existing parallel coordination libraries, such as MPI. MPI is an attractive alternative, as like Java, it is portable. We discuss both approaches here. In undertaking this study, we have also identified some minor modifications of the current language specification that would make 100%-Pure Java parallel programming more natural.

We describe Actors, a flexible, scalable and efficient model of computation, and develop a framework for analyzing the parallel complexity of programs written in it. Actors are asynchronous, autonomous objects which interact by message-passing. The data and process decomposition inherent in Actors simplifies modeling real-world systems. High-level concurrent programming abstractions have been developed to simplify program development using Actors; such abstractions do not compromise an efficient and portable implementation. In this paper, we define a parallel complexity model for Actors. The model we develop gives an accurate measure of performance on realistic architectures. We illustrate its use by analyzing a number of examples.

We describe an approach aimed at addressing the issue of joint exploitation of control ( stream) and data parallelism in a skeleton based parallel programming environment, based on annotations and refactoring. Annotations drive efficient implementation of a parallel computation. Refactoring is used to transform the associated skeleton tree into a more efficient, functionally equivalent skeleton tree. In most cases, cost models are used to drive the refactoring process. We show how sample use case applications/kernels may be optimized and discuss preliminary experiments with FastFlow assessing the theoretical results.

Many hard-combinatorial problems have only be solved by SAT solvers in a massively parallel setting. This reduces the trust one has in the final result as errors might occur during parallel SAT solving or during partitioning of the original problem. We present a new framework to produce clausal proofs for cube-and-conquer, arguably the most effective parallel SAT solving paradigm for hard-combinatorial problems. The framework also provides an elegant approach to parallelize the validation of clausal proofs efficiently, both in terms of run time and memory usage. We evaluate the presented approach on some hard-combinatorial problems and validate constructed clausal proofs in parallel.

The current progression of commodity processing architectures exhibits a trend toward increasing parallelism, requiring that undergraduate students in a wide range of technical disciplines gain an understanding of problem solving in massively parallel environments. However, as a comprehensive college, we cannot currently afford to dedicate an entire semesterlong course to the study of parallel computing. To combat this situation, we have integrated the key components of such a course into a 300-level course on modern operating systems. In this paper, we describe a parallel computing unit that is designed to dovetail with the discussion of process and thread management common to operating systems courses. We also describe a set of self-contained projects in which students explore two parallel programming models, POSIX Threads and NVIDIA's Compute Unified Device Architecture, that enable parallel architectures to be utilized effectively. In our experience, this unit can be integrated with traditional operating systems topics quite readily, making parallel computing accessible to undergraduate students without requiring a full course dedicated to these increasingly important topics. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2009.

Recently, commercial parallel applications became important in parallel computing with the increase of parallel computer users. In this study, we parallelize two commercial applications, a fulltext search system and a data mining system. In this paper, the implementation of each application and its performance evaluation on the AP3000 parallel computer are shown. A parallel framework, a novel parallelizing approach applied to those applications, is also described.

For a long time efficient use of massively parallel computers has been hindered by dependencies introduced in software through low-level implementation practice. This paper presents a programming environment and language called ObjectMath (Object oriented Mathematical language for scientific computing), which aims at eliminating this problem by allowing the user to represent mathematical equational models directly in the system. The system performs dependency analysis of equations to extract parallelism and automatically generates parallel code for numerical solution. The system is currently being used for industrial applications in advanced mechanical analysis, but is generally applicable to other areas. Using ObjectMath, it is possible to model classes of equation objects, to support inheritance of equations, and to solve systems of equations. © 1993, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

We describe the PCP/PFP programming models which we are using on the BBN TC2000. The parallel programming models are implemented in a portable manner and will be useful on the scalable shared memory machines we expect to see in the future. We then describe the TC20machine architecture which is a scalable general purpose parallel architecture capable of efficiently supporting both shared memory and message passing programming paradigms. We also briefly describe a PCP implementation of the Gauss elimination algorithm which exploits the large local memories on the TC2000. © 1992, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

The execution of iteration methods, including iteration methods for time-dependent differential equations, is one of the most time-consuming tasks in scientific computing, especially when large systems have to be solved, large time scales have to be computed or solutions of high quality are required. To decrease the computation time, parallel machines can be used but a detailed analysis of the potential parallelism is needed for an efficient implementation as data dependencies can strongly limit the performance. This article describes and compares the potential parallelism of various iterative solution methods for linear and non-linear equation systems and ordinary differential equations. Methods that have been especially designed for parallel execution as well as parallel implementations of modern efficient sequential solution methods are considered.
