The BEACH application model and software framework for synchronous collaboration in ubiquitous computing environments

In this paper, a conceptual model for synchronous applications in ubiquitous computing environments is proposed. To test its applicability, it was used to structure the architecture of the BEACH software framework that is the basis for the software infrastructure of i-LAND (the ubiquitous computing environment at FhG-IPSI). The BEACH framework provides the functionality for synchronous cooperation and interaction with roomware components, i.e. room elements with integrated information technology. To show how the BEACH model and framework can be applied, the design of a sample application is explained. Also, the BEACH model is positioned against related work. Extending tuplespaces for coordination in interactive workspaces

The current interest in programming models and software infrastructures to support ubiquitous and environmental computing is heightened by the falling cost of hardware and the ubiquity of local-area wireless networking technologies. Interactive workspaces are technologically augmented team-project rooms that represent a specific sub-domain of ubiquitous computing. We argue both from related work and from our own experience with a prototype that the tuplespace model of communication forms the best basis for a coordination infrastructure for such workspaces. This paper presents the usage and characteristics expected of interactive workspaces, from which we derive a set of key system properties for any coordination infrastructure in an interactive workspace. We show that the design aspects of tuplespaces, augmented with some new extensions, yield a system model, which we call the Event Heap, that satisfies all of the desired properties. We also briefly discuss why other coordination models fall short of the desired properties, and describe our experience using our implementation of the Event Heap model. The paper focuses on a justification of the use of tuplespaces in interactive workspaces, and does not provide a detailed discussion of the Event Heap implementation or our more general experience with interactive workspaces, each of which is treated in detail elsewhere. BFree: Enabling Battery-free Sensor Prototyping with Python

Building and programming tiny battery-free energy harvesting embedded computer systems is hard for the average maker because of the lack of tools, hard to comprehend programming models, and frequent power failures. With the high ecologic cost of equipping the next trillion embedded devices with batteries, it is critical to equip the makers, hobbyists, and novice embedded systems programmers with easy-to-use tools supporting battery-free energy harvesting application development. This way, makers can create untethered embedded systems that are not plugged into the wall, the desktop, or even a battery, providing numerous new applications and allowing for a more sustainable vision of ubiquitous computing. In this paper, we present BFree, a system that makes it possible for makers, hobbyists, and novice embedded programmers to develop battery-free applications using Python programming language and widely available hobbyist maker platforms. BFree provides energy harvesting hardware and a power failure resilient version of Python, with durable libraries that enable common coding practice and off the shelf sensors. We develop demonstration applications, benchmark BFree against battery-powered approaches, and evaluate our system in a user study. This work enables makers to engage with a future of ubiquitous computing that is useful, long-term, and environmentally responsible.

To sustain performance while facing always tighter power and energy envelopes, High Performance computing (HPC) is increasingly leveraging heterogeneous architectures. This poses new challenges: to efficiently exploit the available resources, both in terms of hardware and energy, resource management must support a wide range of different heterogeneous devices and programming models that target different application domains. We present a strategy for resource management and programming model support for heterogeneous accelerators for HPC systems with requirements targeting performance, power and predictability. We show how resource management can, in addition to allowing multiple applications to share a set of resources, reduce the burden on the application developer and improve the efficiency of resource allocation.

Enabling coordination among ubiquitous computing applications and resources requires programming abstractions and development tools tailored to this unique environment. This paper introduces a suite of coordination abstractions that enables expressive interaction between ubiquitous computing applications and dynamically available resources. In our model, applications express their coordination needs in terms of application sessions that are loosely defined by a set of interactions with remote resources. Our approach allows developers to delegate responsibility for the construction and maintenance of the communication links necessary to support the application's sessions to an underlying middleware. In this paper, we formalize a suite of session definitions for coordination in general classes of ubiquitous computing applications. We also present a middleware based on this coordination model that directly supports the software development task. Finally, we demonstrate the simplicity and flexibility of our approach using a real-world application.

Peer to peer and grid systems provide attractive middlewares to solve large numerical problems. The development, deployment and execution of applications using those middlewares suffer from the lack of well-adapted advanced tools. There is not any available solution to use the same application on two distinct middlewares. Our article presents the YML Framework which provides supporting tools to design and execute portable parallel applications over large scale peel, to peer and grid middlewares. The YML Framework defines a new parallel programming language called YvetteML which is composed of a graph language and a component model. We evaluate the performance of our framework with a simple numerical application using XtremWeb as a middleware.

A methodology for parallel programming in new graphical program design system (GRADE-S) based on global application state monitoring is presented. A proposal is given on how to prepare a parallel application for execution in new GRADE. A notation for skeleton versions of GRADE programs is explained. Then, an example of the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) parallel program is given. GUI in the new GRADE corresponding to the TSP program in the new GRADE is shown with the shots of corresponding windows.

This paper presents a development model, tooling environment, and system support for building and deploying applications targeted to run on multiple heterogeneous end-user devices. Our approach is based on a device-independent application model and consists of three elements: (1) an automated process of specialization, by which device-specific versions of the application are generated, (2) support for hand-customization of generated applications, a process we call tweaking, both within our workbench and using external editors, and (3) a designer-in-the-loop process of generalization, by which a generic model is inferred from concrete interface artifacts such as HTML pages. We argue that this approach is cost-effective and results in usable applications that run on a variety of devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This publication is devoted to programming models, languages, and tools for performance-oriented program development in commercial and scientific environments. The included papers have been written based on presentations given at the workshop PADDA 2001. The goal of the workshop was to identify common interests and techniques for performance-oriented program development in commercial and scientific environments. Distributed architectures currently dominate the field of highly parallel computing. Distributed architectures, based on Internet and mobile computing technologies, are important target architectures in the domain of commercial computing too. The papers in this publication come from the two areas: scientific computing and commercial computing.
