Performance model building is essential to predict the ability of an application to satisfy given levels of performance or to support the search for viable alternatives. Using automated methods of model building is becoming of increasing interest to software developers who have neither the skills nor the time to do it manually. This is particularly relevant in pervasive computing, where the large number of software and hardware components requires models of so large a size that using traditional manual methods of model building would be error prone and time consuming. This paper deals with an automated method to build performance models of pervasive computing applications, which require the integration of multiple technologies, including software layers, hardware platforms and wired/wireless networks. The considered performance models are of extended queueing network (EQN) type. The method is based on a procedure that receives as input the UML model of the application to yield as output the complete EQN model, which can then be evaluated by use of any evaluation tool.

This paper presents a development model, tooling environment, and system support for building and deploying applications targeted to run on multiple heterogeneous end-user devices. Our approach is based on a device-independent application model and consists of three elements: (1) an automated process of specialization, by which device-specific versions of the application are generated, (2) support for hand-customization of generated applications, a process we call tweaking, both within our workbench and using external editors, and (3) a designer-in-the-loop process of generalization, by which a generic model is inferred from concrete interface artifacts such as HTML pages. We argue that this approach is cost-effective and results in usable applications that run on a variety of devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The still increasing number of transistors per chip offered by Moore's law, together with the Post-Dennard scaling era shifted the performance gain from frequency increase to multi-core processing. Consequently, the support of parallel execution of applications is becoming mandatory. Furthermore, the need for efficient parallel models and languages is more critical for the embedded domain, due to power consumption and memory constraints, among others. This work focuses on parallelizing an embedded speaker recognition application, which is a biometric technique for identification. While a lot of work has been done for speech recognition, fewer efforts have focused on recognizing who the speaker is. In this paper, we analyze two implementations for speaker recognition applications (SRA), namely dataflow and shared memory programming models. More precisely, we use Process Networks (PNs) as a dataflow representation, which is an intuitive way to design streaming applications. We use the language "C for Process Networks" for the dataflow implementation and OpenMP for the shared memory one. For two different target platforms, we compared two implementations using OpenMP (exploring data-level parallelism only and with pipelining) against a dataflow-based compiled implementation that allows for functional optimization. Despite faster communication over shared memory, we show that the dataflow model is superior in terms of performance (up to twice as fast).

Roam, a seamless application framework

One of the biggest challenges in future application development is device heterogeneity. In the future, we expect to see a rich variety of computing devices that can run applications. These devices have different capabilities in processors, memory, networking, screen sizes, input methods, and software libraries. We also expect that future users are likely to own many types of devices. Depending on users' changing situations and environments, they may choose to switch from one type of device to another that brings the best combination of application functionality and device mobility (size, weight, etc.). Based on this scenario, we have designed and implemented a seamless application framework called the Roam system that can both assist developers to build multi-platform applications that can run on heterogeneous devices and allow a user to move/migrate a running application among heterogeneous devices in an effortless manner. The Roam system is based on partitioning of an application into components and it automatically selects the most appropriate adaptation strategy at the component level for a target platform. To evaluate our system, we have created several multi-platform Roam applications including a Chess game, a Connect4 game, and a shopping aid application. We also provide measurements on application performance and describe our experience with application development in the Roam system. Our experience shows that it is relatively easy to port existing applications to the Roam system and runtime application migration latency is within a few seconds and acceptable to most non-real-time applications. Building ubiquitous QoC-aware applications through model-driven software engineering

As every-day mobile devices can easily be equipped with multiple sensing capabilities, ubiquitous applications are expected to exploit the richness of the context information that can be collected by these devices in order to provide the service that is the most appropriate to the situation of the user. However, the design and implementation of such context-aware ubiquitous appplications remain challenging as there exist very few models and tools to guide application designers and developers in mastering the complexity of context information. This becomes even more crucial as context is by nature imperfect. One way to address this issue is to associate to context information meta-data representing its quality. We propose a generic and extensible design process for context-aware applications taking into account the quality of context (QoC). We demonstrate its use on a prototype application for sending flash sale offers to mobile users. We present extensive performance results in terms of memory and processing time of both elementary context management operations and the whole context policy implementing the Flash sale application. The cost of adding QoC management is also measured and appears to be limited to a few milliseconds. We show that a context policy with 120 QoC-aware nodes can be processed in less than 100 ms on a mobile phone. Moreover, a policy of almost 3000 nodes can be instantiated before exhausting the resources of the phone. This enables very rich application scenarios enhancing the user experience and will favor the development of new ubiquitous applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MHGrid (Meta Heuristics Grid), a service oriented grid application offering global optimization solvers, allows developers to integrate their solvers and objective functions through an easy-to-use transparent mechanism. As a consequence of offering such a service, MHGrid hosts solvers and objective functions implementing diverse parallelization models leading later to different job grain size. Yet, the flexibility of the existing grid programming tools is limited if used individually. This paper proposes a model that uses a combination of grid parallel programming tools to enable the developers of MHGrid to specify their own parallelization model. Using this model the end user can choose the parallel model of the solver/objective function pair generating the grain size most appropriate to the problem in hand.

The interest towards programming of streaming applications using dataflow models of computation has been increasing steadily in the recent years. Among the numerous dataflow formalisms, the ISO-standardized RVC-CAL dataflow language has offered a solid basis for programming tool development and research. To this date RVC-CAL programming tools have enabled transforming dataflow programs into concurrent executables for multicore processors, as well as for generating synthesizable hardware descriptions. In this paper it is shown how the RVC-CAL dataflow language can be used for programming graphics processing units (GPUs) with high efficiency. Considering the processing architectures of recent mobile and desktop computing devices, this advance is of high importance, as most consumer devices contain a graphics processing unit nowadays. To evaluate the proposed solution, the paper presents a video processing application case study. At best, the solution is shown to provide a speedup of 42x over single-threaded CPU execution.

A Methodology and Simulation-Based Toolchain for Estimating Deployment Performance of Smart Collective Services at the Edge

Research trends are pushing artificial intelligence (AI) across the Internet of Things (IoT)-edge-fog-cloud continuum to enable effective data analytics, decision making, as well as the efficient use of resources for QoS targets. Approaches for collective adaptive systems (CASs) engineering, such as aggregate computing, provide declarative programming models and tools for dealing with the uncertainty and the complexity that may arise from scale, heterogeneity, and dynamicity. Crucially, aggregate computing architecture allows for "pulverization": applications can be decomposed into many deployable micromodules that can be spread across the ICT infrastructure, thus allowing multiple potential deployment configurations for the same application logic. This article studies the deployment architecture of aggregate-based edge services and its implications in terms of performance and cost. The goal is to provide methodological guidelines and a model-based toolchain for the generation and simulation-based evaluation of potential deployments. First, we address this subject methodologically by proposing an approach based on deployment code generators and a simulation phase whose obtained solutions are assessed with respect to their performance and costs. We then tailor this approach to aggregate computing applications deployed onto an IoT-edge-fog-cloud infrastructure, and we develop a corresponding toolchain based on Protelis and EdgeCloudSim. Finally, we evaluate the approach and tools through a case study of edge multimedia streaming, where the edge ecosystem exhibits intelligence by self-organizing into clusters to promote load balancing in large-scale dynamic settings.

PQE2000 is an italian project on High Performance computing (HPC) , whose goal is the realization of innovative general purpose systems and programming tools, as well as the development of new strategic HPC applications fir industry, commerce and public services. The research activities of PQE2000 include MPP architecture, software tools and programming environments, and applications in technical, transactional and new media areas. The results of these activities are transferred into industrial products. This paper describes the guidelines, the current products and technologies of PQE2000, and the trends in the area of relationships between programming environments and architectural models for the efficient exploitation of large degree of variable grain parallelism in complex applications.
