A URC (ubiquitous robotic companion) is a concept for a network-based service robot. It allows the service robot to extend its functions and services by utilizing external sensor networks and remote computing servers. It also provides the robot's services at any time and any place. The URC requires not only the hardware infrastructure such as ubiquitous networks or sensor networks and high-performance computing servers but also the software infrastructure which resides above the hardware infrastructure. In this paper, authors introduce the CAMUS (context-aware middleware for URC system) as a part of the software infrastructure, which is a system middleware to support context-aware services for network-based robots. The CAMUS is based on the CORBA technology. It provides the common data model for different types of context information from external sensors, applications and users in the environment. It also offers the software framework to acquire, interpret and disseminate context information. PLUE (programming Language for ubiquitous Environment) is proposed to describe context-aware services for robots.

With the growing numbers of both parallel architectures and related programming models, the benchmarking tasks become very tricky since parallel programming requires architecture-dependent compilers and languages as well as high programming expertise. More than just comparing architectures with synthetic benchmarks, benchmarking is also more and more used to design specialized systems composed of heterogeneous computing resources to optimize the performance or performance/watt ratio (e.g. embedded systems designers build System-on-Chip (SoC) out of dedicated and well-chosen components). In the High-Performance-computing (HPC) domain, systems are designed with symmetric and scalable computing nodes built to deliver the highest performance on a wide variety of applications. However, HPC is now facing cost and power consumption issues which motivate the design of heterogeneous systems. This is one of the rationales of the European FiPS project, which proposes to develop hardware architecture and software methodology easing the design of such systems. Thus, having a fair comparison between architectures while considering an application is of growing importance. Unfortunately, porting it on all available architectures using the related programming models is impossible. To tackle this challenge, we introduced a novel methodology to evaluate and to compare parallel architectures in order to ease the work of the programmer. Based on the usage of micro benchmarks, code profiling and characterization tools, this methodology introduces a semi-automatic prediction of sequential applications performances on a set of parallel architectures. In addition, performance estimation is correlated with the cost of other criteria such as power or portability effort. Introduced for targeting vision-based embedded applications, our methodology is currently being extended to target more complex applications from HPC world. Service computing and Web 2.0 are converging into a programmable as well as composable Web. This development provides the foundation for Service Mashups --- compositions of Web APIs, Web content and Web data sources. The result is a disruptive class of diversified, agile and interactive software systems that provide unprecedented user experience and allow new fields of application. However, the integration of service computing and Web 2.0 technologies exposes various complexities like programming models and methodologies, service models that are well-suited for mashups, platforms and ergonomics in different operational contexts, as well as economic and social environments. The behavioral correctness of parallel programs has a pivotal role in computational sciences and engineering applications as researchers draw scientific conclusions from the results generated by parallel applications. Moreover, with the advent of multicore processors, the development of parallel programs should be facilitated for the mainstream developers. While numerous programming models and APIs exist for parallel programming, we pose the view that more emphasis should be placed on designing the synchronization mechanisms of parallel programs independent from the design of their functional behaviors. More importantly, programs behaviors evolve (due to new requirements and change of configuration), thereby creating a need for techniques and tools that enable developers to reason about the behavioral evolution of parallel programs. With such motivations, we introduce a framework for automated design/evolution of the synchronization mechanisms of parallel programs.

The paper describes a model-integrated program synthesis environment for computer-based system applications. In model-integrated program synthesis (MIPS), domain-specific, multiple-view models represent the software, its environment and their relationships. Model interpreters translate the models into the input languages of static and dynamic analysis tools, and application specific model interpreters synthesize software applications. The components of the system are built in the framework of the layered multigraph architecture, which separates the generic and domain/application specific components, and defines interfaces for expandability.

Networked heterogeneous systems pose a great challenge for parallel and distributed applications. Middleware provides a critical link between the vast resources and the application domain that simplifies development, provides robust and reliable access to resources, helps optimize resource utilization, and facilitates the generation of stable distributed software. In this paper, we discuss a layered framework for distributed systems middleware, called Delmon, which supports parallel and distributed programming models, tools and applications on heterogeneous systems. Distributed systems middleware provides multiple layers of abstractions to hide the details of the distributed system and facilitate the efficient utilization of such systems. From a software engineering point-of-view, such a layered middleware approach and the separation of concerns improve the development and management of parallel and distributed applications in many ways. The proposed model represented by Delmon is a general three-layer middleware that provides the services required to support parallel and distributed models and applications in clusters and heterogeneous systems. The layers are: the resource-specific services, the self-organized run-time environment, and the parallel and distributed programming models. We also demonstrate the benefits of this well-defined layered approach that offers different levels of services and functionalities.

The interest towards programming of streaming applications using dataflow models of computation has been increasing steadily in the recent years. Among the numerous dataflow formalisms, the ISO-standardized RVC-CAL dataflow language has offered a solid basis for programming tool development and research. To this date RVC-CAL programming tools have enabled transforming dataflow programs into concurrent executables for multicore processors, as well as for generating synthesizable hardware descriptions. In this paper it is shown how the RVC-CAL dataflow language can be used for programming graphics processing units (GPUs) with high efficiency. Considering the processing architectures of recent mobile and desktop computing devices, this advance is of high importance, as most consumer devices contain a graphics processing unit nowadays. To evaluate the proposed solution, the paper presents a video processing application case study. At best, the solution is shown to provide a speedup of 42× over single-threaded CPU execution.

This work describes how we use High-Level Synthesis to support design space exploration (DSE) of heterogeneous many-core systems. Modern embedded systems increasingly couple hardware accelerators and processing cores on the same chip, to trade specialization of the platform to an application domain for increased performance and energy efficiency. However, the process of designing such a platform is complex and error-prone, and requires skills on algorithmic aspects, hardware synthesis, and software engineering. DSE can partially be automated, and thus simplified, by coupling the use of HLS tools and virtual prototyping platforms. In this paper we enable the design space exploration of heterogeneous many-cores adopting a shared-memory architecture template, where communication and synchronization between the hardware accelerators and the cores happens through L1 shared memory. This communication infrastructure leverages a "zero-copy" scheme, which simplifies both the design process of the platform and the development of applications on top of it. Moreover, the shared-memory template perfectly fits the semantics of several high-level programming models, such as OpenMP. We provide programmers with simple yet powerful abstractions to exploit accelerators from within an OpenMP application, and propose a low-cost implementation of the necessary runtime support. An HLS-based automatic design flow is set up, to quickly explore the design space using a cycle-accurate virtual platform.

Directive-drive programming models, such as OpenMP, are one solution for exploiting the potential of multicore architectures, and enable developers to accelerate software applications by adding annotations on for-type loops and other code regions. However, manual parallelization of applications is known to be a non trivial and time consuming process, requiring parallel programming skills. Automatic parallelization approaches can reduce the burden on the application development side. This paper presents an OpenMP based automatic parallelization compiler, named AutoPar-Clava, for automatic identification and annotation of loops in C code. By using static analysis, parallelizable regions are detected, and a compilable OpenMP parallel code from the sequential version is produced. In order to reduce the accesses to shared memory by each thread, each variable is categorized into the proper OpenMP scoping. Also, AutoPar-Clava is able to support reduction on arrays, which is available since OpenMP 4.5. The effectiveness of AutoPar-Clava is evaluated by means of the Polyhedral Benchmark suite, and targeting a N-cores x86-based computing platform. The achieved results are very promising and compare favorably with closely related auto-parallelization compilers such as Intel C/C++ Compiler (i.e., icc), ROSE, TRACO, and Cetus.
