We describe two different approaches to multi-level graph partitioning (MGP). The first is an approach to parallel graph partitioning that scales to hundreds of processors. All components of this algorithm are implemented by scalable parallel algorithms. The second algorithm is based on the extreme idea to contract only a single edge on each level of the hierarchy. This obviates the need for a matching algorithm and promises very good partitioning quality since there are very few changes between two levels. Both algorithms produce a very high solution quality. Quality improvements compared to previous systems are due to better prioritization of edges to be contracted, better approximation algorithms for identifying matchings and FM local search algorithms that work more locally than previous approaches.

In this work we formulate the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin 2 (CDG2) method introduced in [8] for advection-diffusion problems. We present a proof of stability for the linear heat equation. Numerical results are shown for the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. We compare our newmethod numerically with two other well-established methods: The Compact Discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) and the Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method. In contrast to the LDG method, the primal formulation of the CDG2 method only involves the direct neighbors, making it more suitable for execution on parallel computers. The CDG method also has this compactness property, but the performance of the method is not as good as for the CDG2 method in terms of L2-error versus computation time.

High performance computations are required to support design activities for the ITER fusion reactor which is currently in phase of construction in Cadarache, France (its web-site: ***). In the ITER tokamak geometry, the Monte Carlo (MC) method is the preferred one for radiation transport calculations. This method allows describing neutrons interactions with matter by tracking individual particle histories. The precision of the MC method depends on number of sampled particles according to statistical laws and on systematic uncertainties introduced by modeling assumptions. Due to the independence of particle histories, their tracks can be processed in parallel. Parallel computations on high performance cluster computers substantially increase number of sampled particles and therefore allow reaching the desired statistical precision of the MC results. Use of CAD-based approach with high spatial resolution improves systematic adequacy of the MC geometry modeling. These achievements are demonstrated on radiation transport calculations for designing the Blanket Shield Module and Auxiliary Shield of the ITER Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) upper launcher.
