User privacy has been a major concern against the widespread adoption of the cloud technology. A full-fledged cloud data service should effectively support data utilization tasks, especially flexible data search functionalities, while simultaneously achieve user privacy assurance and meet practical system-level performance requirements. In this position paper, we identify the importance and challenges of designing privacy-assured, \textit{flexible} and \textit{practically efficient} search mechanisms for outsourced cloud data services. In particular, we focus on two representative types of flexible search functionalities: ranked keyword search, and search over structured data. Although these functionalities are already prevalent in information retrieval in the plaintext domain, realizing them in the encrypted domain requires non-trivial effort and is relatively new. In light of this, we first describe several existing technical approaches proposed by us and other researchers, and identify their advantages and limitations. We also discuss the open research directions and provide some possible ideas for further investigation. We believe the presented results will inspire more research towards making privacy-assured search in the cloud practical and useful.

Query autocompletion (QAC) is an important feature that automatically completes a query and saves users’ keystrokes. It has been widely adopted in Web search engines, desktop search, input method editors, etc. In some applications, especially for mobile devices, typing accurately is laborious and error-prone. Hence advanced QAC methods tolerate errors when users are typing. As such, some data integration tasks also adopt this feature to process string similarity searches. Most existing work uses edit distance to measure the similarity between the input and correct strings. These methods overlook the quality of the suggested completions, and the efficiency needs to be improved. In this paper, we present NGNC, a framework that supports error-tolerant QAC in a flexible and efficient way. The framework is designed on the basis of a noisy channel model which separates the query prediction to two estimations, one by a language model and the other by an error model. Many QAC ranking methods and spelling correction methods can be easily plugged into the framework. To address the efficiency issue, we devise a neighborhood generation method accompanied with a trie index to quickly find candidates for the error model, as well as a fast top-k retrieval method by caching and pruning. We develop a QAC system based on NGNC. It is able to evaluate the combinations of various ranking and spelling correction methods using query logs and automatically choose the best combination for online query workloads. We highlight research challenges, present our solutions, overview the system architecture, and perform an experimental evaluation on a real dataset to showcase how NGNC improves the state of the art of error-tolerant QAC. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Fastest-path queries between two points in a very large road map is an increasingly important primitive in modern transportation and navigation systems, thus very efficient computation of these paths is critical for system performance and throughput. We present a novel method to compute an effective admissible heuristic for the fastest-path travel time between two points on a road map, which can be used to significantly accelerate the classical A∗ algorithm when computing fastest paths. Our basic method-called the Hierarchical Separator Heuristic (HSH)-is based on a hierarchical set of linear separators of the map represented by a binary tree, where all the separators are parallel lines in a specific direction. A preprocessing step computes a short vector of values per road junction based on the separator tree, which is then stored with the map and used to efficiently compute the heuristic at the online query stage. We demonstrate experimentally that this method scales well to any map size, providing a high-quality heuristic, thus very efficient A∗ search, for fastest-path queries between points at all distances-especially small and medium range. We show how to significantly improve the basic HSH method by combining separator hierarchies in multiple directions and by partitioning the linear separators. Experimental results on real-world road maps show that HSH achieves accuracy above 95% in estimating the true travel time between two junctions at the price of storing approximately 25 values per junction. © 2020 ACM.

Staying up to date with the latest discoveries is a challenge in any scientific field. In planetary science, new observation targets on the surface of Mars are identified and named every day, and new publications announcing new discoveries and conclusions provide frequent updates about these targets. We are constructing a system that uses information extraction and retrieval methods to mine the steadily growing body of planetary science publications about Mars surface targets and automatically construct a concise summary of what is known about each target. The Mars Target Encyclopedia will provide a central, continually updated resource for use by planetary scientists and the interested public. We describe our use of Tika, Sundance, and AutoSlog to extract and summarize information, some of the challenges associated with this domain, and our plans for maturing the system. Reconfigurable computing has been making inroads in the front-end digital signal processing systems deployed at radio telescopes around the world. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) at Green Bank has developed a signal processing system expressly for pulsar search and timing observations. These observations are among the most demanding experiments in terms of real-time computational and data rate requirements. In this paper, we describe the application domain, the challenges in designing a system to meet these demands, and the resulting heterogeneous computing system.

Query-by-keywords is the most popular manner to search for data in this computing age. However, most work was proposed for searching centralized relational databases. This paper investigates how keyword search is to be deployed in relational database-enabled peer-to-peer systems. Unlike centralized system, the key challenges in this new computing paradigm come from the autonomy of peers, the lack of a global schema, and the dynamics of the peer connectivity. First, the concept of P2P-join is proposed, which is a join operation to combine tuples among relations from different peers containing certain keywords in the query. Second, a fully distributed framework to realize P2P-join processing is devised, which not only inherits the syntax and semantics of traditional join but also cherishes the ideology of peer-to-peer computing. Finally, two mechanisms are proposed to improve the performance of the operation: a join path selecting order scheme and a push-based load balancing mechanism across peers

The problem of preserving knowledge in the digital space arose in the middle of the last century and is gradually aggravated with the increase in the flow of digital information. The scientific community is faced with new challenges related to the speed of dissemination of information and scientific ideas. Classical scientific schools, which were the basis of university education, have undergone changes in connection with distance learning and the idea of openness of science as part of the common values of society. Against the background of increasing information noise, the search for reliable data is becoming an independent activity. The period of accumulation of digitized information is being replaced by the accumulation of knowledge in an integrated form, in the form of structured data. However, the increase in the number of information resources does not improve the quality of the information provided. One of the tasks of the scientific community is to provide an expert assessment of the accumulated digital knowledge. This assessment should be based on the authority of scientific schools. The paper discusses the problem of supporting information images of traditional scientific schools and their development in the digital space. On the example of the integration of mathematical knowledge, the tasks and ways of their solution in the process of assessing and preserving digitized knowledge are formulated. Virtually interconnected objects with unique identifiers and computing, communication and sensing functionalities form the Internet of Things (IoT) architecture. In the cloud-centric IoT concept, IoT objects can provide sensing services based on a cloud-inspired business model. Smart mobile devices have a great potential to improve the performance of IoT applications by enabling access to their built-in sensor data through cloud servers based on the pay-as-you-go fashion. Such an architecture requires effective sensing service provider search techniques accompanied with effective recruitment algorithms for sensing service providers. Moreover, reliability and trustworthiness of sensing service provisioning is a crucial challenge. This paper provides a brief survey of the state of the art in sensing services over cloud-centric IoT, and presents recent research that addresses the challenges that are mentioned above. Moreover, the paper aims at defining a taxonomy of the surveyed schemes while reporting open issues, existing challenges and possible research directions.

Ubiquitous computing environments embedding a wide range of pervasive computing technologies provide a challenging and exciting new domain for information access. Individuals working in these environments are increasingly permanently connected to rich information resources. An appealing opportunity of these environments is the potential to deliver useful information to individuals either from their previous information experiences or external sources. This information should enrich their life experiences or make them more effective in their endeavours. Information access in ubiquitous computing environments can be made "context-aware" by exploiting the wide range context data available describing the environment, the searcher and the information itself. Realizing such a vision of reliable, timely and appropriate identification and delivery of information in this way poses numerous challenges. A central theme in achieving context-aware information access is the combination of information retrieval with multiple dimensions of available context data. Potential context data sources, include the user's current task, inputs from environmental and biometric sensors, associated with the user's current context, previous contexts, and document context, which can be exploited using a variety of technologies to create new and exciting possibilities for information access.
