Sound synthesis and processing has been the most active research topic in the field of Sound and Music computing for more than 40 years. Quite a number of the early research results are now standard components of many audio and music devices and new technologies are continuously being developed and integrated into new products. Through the years there have been important changes. For example, most of the abstract algorithms that were the focus of work in the 70s and 80s are considered obsolete. Then the 1990s saw the emergence of computational approaches that aimed either at capturing the characteristics of a sound source, known as physical models, or at capturing the perceptual characteristics of the sound signal, generally referred to as spectral or signal models. More recent trends include the combination of physical and spectral models and the corpus-based concatenative methods. But the field faces major challenges that might revolutionize the standard paradigms and applications of sound synthesis. In this article we will first place the sound synthesis topic within its research context, then we will highlight some of the current trends, and finally we will attempt to identify some challenges for the future.

The goal of this workshop is to investigate the notion of mobility in the context of search and Web usage and to identify the most promising research directions with respect to enriching future mobility focused web services. In recent times, there has been a dramatic shift in what it means to be mobile. Mobile was traditionally associated with on-the-move, personal, portable and dynamic. While today, an increasing number of users are accessing the mobile Web in more stationary and familiar settings like at home and at work as well as in more social settings like in the presence of family and friends. Designing future mobile Web experiences requires a deeper understanding of these new information needs, behaviors and underlying motivations of mobile users.

This workshop aims to provide a forum for the IR community to voice and discuss their concerns and pitch proposals for building and strengthening the field and community.

A critical challenge for wireless communications in the millimeter wave (mmWave) bands is blockage. MmWave signals suffer significant penetration losses from many common materials and objects, and small changes in the position of obstacles in the environment can cause large variations in the channel quality. This paper provides a measurement-based study of the effects of human blockage on an end-to-end application over a mmWave cellular link. A phased array system is used to measure the channel in multiple directions almost simultaneously in a realistic indoor scenario. The measurements are integrated into a detailed ns-3 simulation that models both the latest 3GPP new Radio beam search procedure as well as the internet protocol stack. The measurement-based simulation illustrates how recovery from blockage depends on the path diversity and beam search.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are expected by many to become the next wave of computing with significant impacts on our daily lives. Motivated by this, we organized a workshop on "Multimodal Virtual and Augmented Reality (MVAR)" at the 18th ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI 2016). While current VR and AR installations mostly focus on the visual domain, we expect multimodality to play a crucial role in future, next generation VR/AR systems. The submissions for this workshop reflect the potential of multimodality for VR and AR, illustrate interesting new directions, and pinpoint important issues. This paper gives a short motivation for the workshop and its aim, and summarizes the aforementioned trends and challenges identified from the submissions.

Keyword search is a wildly popular way for querying XML document. However, the increasing volume of XML data poses new challenges to keyword search processing. Parallel database is an efficient solution for this problem. In this paper, we study the problem of effective keyword search for SLCA (Smallest lower common ancestor) in parallel XML databases. We propose two efficient algorithm SONB (Scan once with no buffer) and MSOP (Merge strategy based on ordered partition) to compute the SLCA efficiently in the parallel environment. We have performed an extensive experimental study and the results show that our proposed approach achieves high efficiency for the keyword search. © 2011 IEEE.

Reconfigurable computing has been making inroads in the front-end digital signal processing systems deployed at radio telescopes around the world. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) at Green Bank has developed a signal processing system expressly for pulsar search and timing observations. These observations are among the most demanding experiments in terms of real-time computational and data rate requirements. In this paper, we describe the application domain, the challenges in designing a system to meet these demands, and the resulting heterogeneous computing system. © 2010 IEEE.

The pursuit of moving targets in real-time environments such as computer games and robotics presents several challenges to situated agents. A priori unknown state spaces and the need to interleave acting and planning limits the applicability of traditional search, learning, and adversarial game-tree search methods. In this paper we build on the previous idea of hierarchical state abstraction, showing how it can be effectively applied to each of the problems in moving target pursuit. First, we develop new algorithms for both chasing agents and target agents that automatically build and refine a hierarchical state abstraction. We then demonstrate the improvements in performance that the state abstraction affords when applied to incremental A* search, learning real-time heuristic search, and minimax adversarial search. Finally, we propose and evaluate a systematic and efficient method of using single-agent techniques in adversarial domains. This leads to a diverse family of new moving target pursuit algorithms which draw on recent advances in single-agent search. In a preliminary empirical evaluation, we demonstrate effects of state abstraction on search and learning in the agents. Copyright © 2006, American Association for Artificial Intelligence (***). P2P computing has opened up exciting new possibilities by extending the boundaries of scale, creating virtual supercomputers enabling computing in the large, providing gigantic storage clusters and specialized search engines based on shared content and information. However, the P2P revolution has left the large enterprises, small and medium businesses and other organizations largely untouched. These organizations also require access to specialized computing infrastructure, secure scalable storage and to collaborate with other organizations on joint projects or share. mutually beneficial information. This research paper proposes to extend the power of P2P networks/computing across enterprises, indicating some possible applications and their benefits, providing an insight into some challenges which need addressing and finally presenting a viable framework which shall enable the realization of the Peer Enterprises concept.

Hybrid Metaheuristics for QoS-Aware Service Composition: A Systematic Mapping Study

With the advent of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), services can be registered, invoked, and combined by their identical Quality of Services (QoS) attributes to create a new value-added application that fulfils user requirements. Efficient QoS-aware service composition has been a challenging task in cloud computing. This challenge becomes more formidable in emerging resource-constrained computing paradigms, such as the Internet of Things and Fog. Service composition has regarded as a multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem that falls in the category of NP-hard. Historically, the proliferation of services added to problem complexity and navigated solutions from exact (none-heuristics) approaches to near-optimal heuristics and metaheuristics. Although metaheuristics have fulfilled some expectations, the quest for finding a high-quality, near-optimal solution has led researchers to devise hybrid methods. As a result, research on service composition shifts towards the hybridization of metaheuristics. Hybrid metaheuristics have been promising efforts to transcend the boundaries of metaheuristics by leveraging the strength of complementary methods to overcome base algorithm shortcomings. Despite the significance and frontier position of hybrid metaheuristics, to the best of our knowledge, there is no systematic research and survey in this field with a particular focus on strategies to hybridize traditional metaheuristics. This study's core contribution is to infer a framework for hybridization strategies by conducting a mapping study that analyses 71 papers between 2008 and 2020. Moreover, it provides a panoramic view of hybrid methods and their experiment setting in respect to the problem domain as the main outcome of this mapping study. Finally, research trends, directions and challenges are discussed to benefit future endeavours.
