The BookSampo Linked Data (LD) portal was deployed in 2011 by the Public Libraries of Finland and has today nearly 1.6 million annual users. Its large knowledge graph (KG) covers virtually all Finnish Fiction literature but has not been fully exploited in Digital Humanities. This paper discusses how the KG can be used for literary search, data exploration, and research by presenting a new BookSampo user interface (UI) based on faceted semantic search and browsing with seamlessly integrated data-analytic visualization tools. This application makes it possible for the first time to analyze the BookSampo data in versatile ways without programming skills. The analysis results presented suggest interesting spatial, temporal, and topical trends in how the Finnish fiction literature has evolved during the last decades. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Driven by advances in computer vision and the falling costs of camera hardware, organizations are deploying video cameras en masse for the spatial monitoring of their physical premises. Scaling video analytics to massive camera deployments, however, presents a new and mounting challenge, as compute cost grows proportionally to the number of camera feeds. This paper is driven by a simple question: can we scale video analytics in such a way that cost grows sublinearly, or even remains constant, as we deploy more cameras, while inference accuracy remains stable, or even improves. We believe the answer is yes. Our key observation is that video feeds from wide-area camera deployments demonstrate significant content correlations (e.g. to other geographically proximate feeds), both in space and over time. These spatio-temporal correlations can be harnessed to dramatically reduce the size of the inference search space, decreasing both workload and false positive rates in multi-camera video analytics. By discussing use-cases and technical challenges, we propose a roadmap for scaling video analytics to large camera networks, and outline a plan for its realization.

Edge computing enables new, low-latency services close to data producers and consumers. However, edge service management is challenged by high hardware heterogeneity and missing elasticity capabilities. To address these challenges, this paper introduces the concept of elastic services. Elastic services are situation aware and can adapt themselves to the current execution environment dynamically to adhere to their Service Level Objectives (SLOs). This adaptation is achieved through Diversifiable Programming (DivProg), a new programming model which uses function annotations as interface between the service logic, its SLOs, and the execution framework. DivProg enables developers to characterize their services in a way that allows a third-party execution framework to run them with the flow and the parametrization that conforms to changing SLOs. We develop a prototype and perform an experimental evaluation which shows that elastic services can seamlessly adapt to heterogeneous platforms and scale with a wide range of input sizes, while adhering to their SLOs with little programming effort. © 2018 IFIP.

Peer-to-peer computing, the harnessing of idle compute cycles throughout the Internet, offers exciting new research challenges in the converging domains of networking and distributed computing. Our system, Cluster computing on the Fly, seeks to harvest cycles from ordinary users in an open access, non-institutional environment. CCOF encompasses all activities involved in the management of idle cycles: overlay construction for hosts donating cycles, resource discovery within the overlay, application-based scheduling, local scheduling on the host node, and meta-level scheduling among a community of application-level schedulers. In this paper, we identify four important classes of cycle-sharing applications, each requiring its own scheduling strategy: workpile, workpile with deadlines, tree-based search, and point-of-presence. We describe a Wave Scheduler for workpile tasks that exploits idle night-time cycles using a geographic-based overlay. The scheduler incorporates a quizzing mechanism to check the correctness of results and determine trust ratings for the hosts. We also propose a Point-of-Presence Scheduler to discover and schedule hosts that meet application-specific requirements for location, topological distribution, and available resources.

In recent years, real-time human activity recognition (HAR) has reached importance due to its applications in various domains such as assistive services for the elderly in smart buildings, monitoring, well-being, comfort and security. Various techniques, researched within the image processing and computer vision communities, have been established to recognize human activities in real-time, but all of them are based on wearable sensors and there is no much attention for ambient sensor based approaches. In the literature, deep learning (DL) is one of effective and cost-efficient supervised learning model and different architectures haves been investigated for real-time HAR. However, it still struggles with the quality of data as well as hardware implementation issues. This paper presents two contributions. Firstly, an intensive analysis of DL architectures and its characteristics along with their limitations in the framework of real time HAR are investigated. Secondly, existing hardware architectures and related challenges in this field are highlighted (adaptation of DL architectures towards microcontrollers, difficulty to provide a smart home with numerous sensors and trends regarding cloud-bases approaches). Then, new research directions and solutions around the real-time data quality assessment, the study of main performance factors for DL on microcontrollers, the concept of minimal sensors set up for the employment of IoT devices and the distributed intelligence are suggested to solve them respectively and to improve this field.

Classically, searching an unsorted database requires a linear search, which is O(n) in time. Using Grover's quantum search algorithm, it is possible to do it in O(root n) time which is a quadratic speedup compared to its classical counterpart. The aim of this research is to exploit this speedup and find other applications in different algorithms commonly used in database systems.

Proper scheduling of flexible manufacturing systems is considered a key success for industry. Automated guided vehicles are parts of flexible manufacturing systems and are easy to utilize in production systems. Time is directly related to the production costs of all kind. It is necessary to minimize production costs. Improper scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles may increase the production time. Simultaneous scheduling of machines and material handling systems has many benefits though they are not challenges free. Scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles, if considered separately, are NP-Hard problems regardless of being considered together or separately. There are two types of scheduling problems according to the literature. Review of literature show that although offline scheduling of machines and vehicles has been studied in a great detail, lack of studies related to dynamic scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles is very visible. Therefore, the main focus of this study is simultaneous scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles. First, a heuristic scheduler is designed, in MATLAB software, to propose solutions for simultaneous scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles in flexible manufacturing systems. Then, a time frame is applied to the offline test problems from the literature to produce dynamic scheduling problem. The methodology in this study is applied on a sample test problem from previous studies for validation purpose. Furthermore, the new dynamic scheduling was performed by producing time tables for pre-defined time frames. The sample test problems are then mathematically modeled to represent the limitations and constraints of the offline and dynamic scheduling problem.

Propositional satisfiability (SAT) and Constraint Programming (CP) are two dominant tools for solving combinatoral search problems. Both of these has their own strengths and weaknesses. In this report, we describe a tight integration of SAT with CP, called SAT(gc), which embeds global constraints into SAT. A system named SATCP is implemented by integrating the DPLL based SAT solver zchaff and the generic constraint solver gecode. Experiments are carried out for benchmarks from puzzle domains and planning domains to reveal insights in compact representation, solving effectiveness, and novel usability of the new framework. We highlight some issues with the current implementation of SATCP, with possible directions to resolve those issues.

One of the main challenges in today's world of vastly distributed sources of information is to re-combine information sources to provide uniform access. We propose a distributed data management system that should provide the "glue" for combining data sources. This system advocates services as a means to access data. new services are defined on demand and their creation is supported by a behaviorist approach that incorporates new service ideas provided by the user. Services can be based on data and/or on the output of existing services. To increase the usability of services in the system we utilize two ontologies to denote relevant metadata. Service ontology structures existing services and helps in discovering new ones. Parameter ontology structures the parameters used in services and supports the creation of new services. Our proposal of a services-based data management system exhibits similarities to the newsgroup approach in that both "systems" are examples of semantic search engines based on user interaction. By exploring these similarities and by looking at some statistics of newsgroup user/posting behavior, we validate our services-based approach. © 2004 IEEE.
