Multi-objective evolutionary computation for topology coverage assessment problem

In recent years, the smart city has gained large traction in government, academia, and business. Many real-world applications of smart cities can be formed to a topology graph and to optimally select a specified number of vertices to minimize the uncovered part of the topology graph. An example application is the optimal installation of a specified number of monitors at the crossroads of a city. Such a minimization problem is named a topology coverage optimization problem (TCOP) in this study, and it is a single-objective optimization problem (SOP). However, in actual situations, determining such a specific number a priori is usually difficult;instead, multiple numbers would be provided to us by the decision-makers and the minimum objective value, as well as the optimal installation solution about each number, is solicited from us such a TCOP about multiple numbers is referred to as "topology coverage assessment problem (TCAP)". Hence, the TCAP consists of a series of SOPs (i.e., a series of TCOP5) each of which is NP-hard to optimize. This study introduces a multi-objective approach that is able to optimize all these TCOP5 simultaneously it is capable of obtaining high quality results about all given numbers at the same time. Besides the simultaneous problem-solving ability, our approach, namely MoCover, also statistically significantly improved the objective value about each provided number, particularly, the vertex cover number result, because of the mutual promoting relations between the TCOP5 and the exploitation of the relations during the optimization process. High utility pattern mining (HUPM) has become a key issue in knowledge discovery since it provides retailers and managers with useful information for making decisions efficiently. However, previous studies most focused on mining the high-utility patterns (HUPs) from a single database. In this paper, we present a framework to incorporate the weighted model for parallel synthesis of the discovered HUPs from various databases. The pre-large concept was also used as a buffer here in order to provide more prospective HUPs, thus providing higher accuracy of the synthesized patterns. From our experiments, the developed model exceeds existing works, in particular the designed model has increased precision and recall on knowledge synthesization compared to the previous works.

The increasing pervasiveness of mobile devices combined with their replacement rate, led us to deal with the disposal of an increasing amount of still working electronic devices. This work proposes an approach to mitigate this problem by extending the mobile devices' lifetime, by integrating them as part of a distributed mobile computing system. Thanks also to the growing computational power of such devices, this paradigm opens up the opportunity to deploy mobile applications in a distributed manner. This, without forgetting the energy budget management as a paramount objective. In this work, we built a proof-of-concept, based on the extension of a run-time resource manager to support Android applications. We introduced a energy-aware device selection policy to dispatch the application workload according to both device capabilities and run-time status. Experimental results show that, as well as increasing the utilization of multiple mobile devices available to the single user, using an energy-efficiency and distributed approach can increase the battery duration between 12% and 36%.

Polynomial fuzzy model-based approach for underactuated surface vessels

The main goal of this study is to introduce a new polynomial fuzzy model-based structure for a class of marine systems with non-linear and polynomial dynamics. The suggested technique relies on a polynomial Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy modelling, a polynomial dynamic parallel distributed compensation and a sum-of-squares (SOS) decomposition. The new proposed approach is a generalisation of the standard T-S fuzzy models and linear matrix inequality which indicated its effectiveness in decreasing the tracking time and increasing the efficiency of the robust tracking control problem for an underactuated surface vessel (USV). Additionally, in order to overcome the USV control challenges, including the USV un-modelled dynamics, complex nonlinear dynamics, external disturbances and parameter uncertainties, the polynomial fuzzy model representation is adopted. Moreover, the USV-based control structure is formulated in terms of SOS conditions. Unlike the conventional approaches, the proposed approach can be easily implemented in the real-time and applied to a reasonably wide class of non-linear systems. Finally, the extensive studies and hardware-in-the-loop simulations are presented, which prove the effectiveness of the novel proposed method.

2-D convolution is a widely used low-level image processing operation, especially in spatial filtering, sharpening, and edge detection. real-time implementation of the convolution operation is a challenging task due to its increasing computational cost with increasing kernel and input image size. This brief focuses on the real-time implementation of a separable convolution operation based on distributed arithmetic with support for processing high-resolution images using large size kernel. The architecture processes pixels immediately whenever available from external memory, achieving low processing time compared to existing works. Two FPGA architectures, namely single window separable convolution (SWSC) architecture and multi-window separable convolution (MWSC) architecture, are proposed. These architectures are realized based on concurrent access of stored pixels and parallel processing of overlapped window in order to attain higher performance/area utilization. Implementation results show that SWSC architecture achieves better processing time and area utilization at the cost of lower throughput compared to MWSC architecture.

pSPICE: Partial match shedding for complex event processing

Complex event processing (CEP) systems continuously process input event streams to detect patterns. Over time, the input event rate might fluctuate and overshoot the system's capabilities. One way to reduce the overload on the system is to use load shedding. In this paper, we propose a load shedding strategy for CEP systems which drops a portion of the CEP operator's internal state (a.k.a. partial matches) to maintain a given latency bound. The crucial question here is how many and which partial matches to drop so that a given latency bound is maintained while minimizing the degradation in the quality of results. In the stream processing domain, different load shedding strategies have been proposed that mainly depend on the importance of individual tuples. However, as CEP systems perform pattern detection, the importance of events is also influenced by other events in the stream. Our load shedding strategy uses Markov chain and Markov reward process to predict the utility/importance of partial matches to determine the ones to be dropped. In addition, we represent the utility in a way that minimizes the overhead of load shedding. Furthermore, we provide algorithms to decide when to start dropping partial matches and how many partial matches to drop. By extensively evaluating our approach on three real-world datasets and several representative queries, we show that the adverse impact of our load shedding strategy on the quality of results is considerably less than the impact of state-of-the-art load shedding strategies. In order to train the capability of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operators to deal with the fault, and verify the effectiveness of the fault detection and processing scheme, a UAV fault injection simulation system is designed. Based on the advanced distributed architecture, the system performs real-time simulation and has good scalability. Wide coverage of fault scenarios could reappear by the distributed closed-loop simulation system. This system ensures the accuracy of the simulation results and meanwhile provides an intuitive feeling in the visual display module. The application results show that the simulation system has good real-time performance, high fidelity, and immersion. It provides effective support for verifying the processing ability of the UAV system to deal with faults and the rationality of the emergency response plan.

Programming distributed embedded systems gives rise to a number of challenges. The distributed nodes are typically resource constrained, requiring expert systems programming skills to manage the limited power, communication bandwidth, and memory and computation constraints. The challenge of raising the level of abstraction of programming such systems without incurring too high of an execution performance penalty is thus an important one. In this paper we present a framework and domain specific language, to enable programming of such systems at a global network level - macroprogramming. Our framework, D'ARTAGNAN, enables the compilation, analysis, transformation and interpretation of high-level descriptions of stream processing applications in which information is received and processed in real-time. D'ARTAGNAN, is a functional macroprogramming language embedded in Haskell, hiding where possible low-level detail, but allowing the developer to add hints and information to enable more efficient compilation to different target architectures.

To efficiently perform collective communications in current high-performance computing systems is a time-consuming task. With future exascale systems, this communication time will be increased further. However, global information is frequently required in various physical models. By exploiting domain knowledge of the model behaviors globally needed information can be distributed more efficiently, using only peer-to-peer communication which spread the information to all processes asynchronous during multiple communication steps. In this article, we introduce a multi-hop based Manhattan Street Network (MSN) for global information exchange and show the conditions under which a local neighbor exchange is sufficient for exchanging distributed information. Besides the MSN, in various models, global information is only needed in a spatially limited region inside the simulation domain. Therefore, a second network is introduced, the local exchange network, to exploit this spatial assumption. Both non-collective global exchange networks are implemented in the massively parallel NAStJA framework. Based on two models, a phase-field model for droplet simulations and the cellular Potts model for biological tissue simulations, we exemplary demonstrate the wide applicability of these networks. Scaling tests of the networks demonstrate a nearly ideal scaling behavior with an efficiency of over 90%. Theoretical prediction of the communication time on future exascale systems shows an enormous advantage of the presented exchange methods of O(1) by exploiting the domain knowledge.
