Optimizing General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) on GPU platforms has become increasingly important due to the scaling demands of modern deep neural network research. While substantial progress has been made in accelerating high-precision GEMM, optimizing lower-bit GEMM remains an open problem. The CUTLASS library offers highly optimized low-bit GEMM based on tensor cores, but performance varies significantly with tile and pipeline settings across different GPUs. We introduce a novel auto-tuning framework for low-bit CUTLASS GEMM that employs a neural network model to predict optimal GEMM template parameters for target GPUs. This model was trained on a synthetic dataset featuring various matrix sizes from different Ampere GPUs and evaluated on these GPUs. In the test dataset, our method achieved an accuracy of up to 92.9%. real-time evaluations of low-bit data types on the A100 GPU demonstrated speedups of up to 2.03× for GEMM and 1.44× for the linear layer compared to the default templates.

With the continuous emergence of large-scale low-Earth orbit satellite constellations and the service-oriented functionality of satellites, we have designed a dynamic service substitution approach to enhance space-based missions’ reliability and completion rate. Based on our formal description model for satellite services, this approach generates one-to-one direct substitution or one-to-many composite substitution schemes when satellite service failures are detected, enabling task migration between satellites through real-time monitoring of satellite status. Additionally, when it is impossible to generate service substitution schemes that strictly meet function and resource requirements, this approach produces suboptimal solutions with relaxed constraints. These solutions are evaluated using our proposed evaluation model. Testing the prototype system demonstrated that our dynamic service substitution approach improves satellite missions’ reliability and completion rate compared to existing methods.

PH-RLS: A parallel hybrid recursive least square algorithm for self-mixing interferometric laser sensor

The authors present the parallel-hybrid recursive least square (PH-RLS) algorithm for an accurate self-mixing interferometric laser vibration sensor coupled with an accelerometer under industrial conditions. Previously, this was achieved by using a conventional RLS algorithm to cancel the parasitic vibrations where the sensor itself is not in the stationary environment. This algorithm operates in sequential mode and due to its compute and data-intensive nature, the algorithm does not work for real-time applications, hence requires parallel computing. Therefore, the existing conventional RLS C program is parallelized by using hybrid OpenACe C/MPI (Open Accelerators/Message Passing Interface) parallel programming models and tested on Barcelona Supercomputing Center CTE-Power9 Supercomputer. The computational performance of the proposed PH-RLS algorithm is compared with the existing conventional RLS code by executing on multi distributed processors and uni-core processor architecture, respectively. While comparing the performance of conventional RLS with a PH-RLS algorithm on eight nodes of CTE-Power9 supercomputer, the results show that the PH-RLS algorithm gets 5857 times of performance improvement as compared to the conventional RLS implementation on a single node system. The results show that the proposed PH-RLS also gives a scalable performance for a different range of vibration signals, making it a suitable choice for real-time self-mixing interferometer sensing systems working under industrial conditions.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has introduced flexibility and efficiency to network management but also faces challenges from flow rule conflicts, including static, dynamic, and dependency conflicts. Existing detection algorithms often focus on a single conflict type, resulting in inefficiencies and high false positive rates. To address these issues, we propose a comprehensive flow rule conflict detection scheme that improves real-time detection of explicit conflicts (both static and dynamic) and reduces false positives in implicit (dependency) conflict detection. Specifically, we present a real-time explicit conflict detection algorithm based on the Protocol-Divided Trie (PDT), which categorizes flow rules by protocol type and uses a prefix tree for rapid matching. Experimental results show that this approach significantly reduces detection times by at least 39.2% and achieves 100% detection accuracy. Additionally, we propose a two-stage detection (TSD) algorithm that combines the precision of path-based detection (PBD) with the efficiency of alias set-based detection (ASD). Our experiments reveal a 51% reduction in false positives compared to ASD and a 48% reduction in detection time compared to PBD, while maintaining equivalent false positive rates. This approach provides a robust solution for conflict detection in SDN, improving network security and resource utilization efficiency.

In the context of federating 6G infrastructures and experimentation facilities, this paper presents a novel approach to integrating User Equipment (UE) computing resources into the Management and Orchestration (MANO) system of Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G networks. Our solution enables UEs to declare their willingness to share their compute resources with the network and to receive the necessary information to join a Kubernetes cluster within the network. This integration allows for the deployment and management of containerized edge applications directly on the UEs, transforming them into active participants in a distributed computing network. This approach leverages the advanced computational capabilities of modern UEs, enhancing network flexibility, scalability, and resilience while enabling real-time, latency-sensitive applications at the extreme edge. Our solution includes a procedure designed specifically for the federated architecture being considered in the SUNRISE-6G project [9].

Many rooms are equipped with conferencing systems with a large number of microphones. However, these systems are often limited to a fixed number of delay-and-sum beamformers and typical automix software will pick the beamformer output with the most energy. A more constructive combination is possible if we have access to the output of multiple beams constructed by such commercial systems. This article proposes a beamspace projection that may effectively view such a commercial conferencing system as a low-latency dimensionality reduction operation. Such a projection can be formulated as a plane wave decomposition of the received signals. Experiments conducted in simulation show that beamspace projection can rapidly approach the SINR gain achievable with access to all the microphones with lower computational complexity. Finally, we use commercial hardware and its beamformer outputs to separate numerous talkers in a real world environment.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm cooperative networks across diverse domains present significant challenges in management and control to maximize collaborative efficiency, particularly in applications for large-scale and dynamic environments where real-time coordination is essential. This challenge has led to the development of a UAV swarm cooperative network flow prediction model, facilitating the strategic anticipation of network dynamics. A novel algorithm for distributed, finite-time cooperative control is introduced, grounded in this model. This algorithm optimizes the operational efficiency and control precision of UAV systems, while simultaneously augmenting the collaborative efficiency and stability of the UAV swarms. It marks a significant advancement in distributed computing strategies, offering a viable solution for the real-time coordination challenges in extensive UAV swarm cooperative networks. The proposed approach leverages multi-agent technology, integrating spatial-temporal constraints, location limitations, and path selection in cooperative behavior for dynamic and effective network management. This study not only enhances the understanding of UAV swarm dynamics but also contributes to the practical application of UAV swarms in areas requiring precise coordination and robust network stability. The growing distributed energy resources (DER) penetration in the low-voltage network (600V and below) challenges the existing protection philosophy and practice. To assess the impact of high DER penetration, the authors built a representative low-voltage network model in real-time electromagnetic transient software and performed hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) protection studies. In the first stage of the effort, the authors invited four major U.S. utilities with low-voltage networks to a technical workshop to survey the modeling and study needs. Guided by the workshop discussions, the authors developed various real-time simulation models, including a low-voltage network model, a model of a commonly used network protector relay, and DER models. Finally, the authors conducted hardware-in-the-loop protection studies to investigate and mitigate the high DER penetration impacts. Part 1 of the paper summarizes the technical workshop outcomes and low-voltage network modeling approaches. Part 2 of the paper reports the HIL simulation setup, high DER penetration impact assessment, and benchmark results of a promising mitigation solution.

Many PET systems use coincidence processors based on a serial architecture for coincidence detection, but this single-threaded coincidence detection has high latency and may even lose events in the case of a high event rate. The parallel coincidence processor has high event processing efficiency. However, the increase in detectors leads to a rapid expansion in the usage of hardware resources. In this study, we investigate a coincidence processor based on a serial and parallel hybrid architecture. The proposed processor first groups and merges data streams to reduce the number of them then uses serial processing to detect coincidence events within the merged data streams. After that, the processor uses a homogeneously distributed coincidence detection network to achieve parallel coincidence detection between different streams. The hybrid architecture of the coincidence processor saves hardware resource usage when the number of input data streams is high. When the coincidence processor has 10 input channels in the second stage of coincidence detection, it can achieve a maximum data transfer rate of 400M events/s and has a coincidence detection efficiency larger than 99.97%. The hybrid architecture of the coincidence processor presented in this paper enables real-time coincidence detection for systems with high event rates such as the long-axis PET while saving lots of hardware resources. © 2022 IEEE.

Electric vehicles (EVs), which have become one of the most important commuting vehicles in the world, heavily depend on the support of robust and efficient grids. Many researchers focus on optimizing the charging of EVs by the grid. However, they overlook the emergency charging when the large-scale grid fails. Inspired by the DC-2-DC technology, EVs can achieve vehicle-2-vehicle (V2V) energy sharing between each other, which inspires us to study leveraging the significant number of electric buses (e-buses) as effective and cost-efficient standby energy to charge low-power EVs when a large-scale grid outage occurs, whereas the feasibility, scheduling algorithm, and performance of e-bus-based V2V energy sharing remain open questions. With this in mind, we first reveal that it is feasible for e-buses to serve as effective standby power for low-power EVs, after careful analysis of real-world data. Then, we conduct a data-driven estimation of the energy consumption to determine the volume of the V2V shared energy for large-scale EVs. Accordingly, we formulate the e-bus-based V2V energy sharing problem, whose two objectives are to maximize the total number of the sufficiently charged EVs and to minimize the distance of these EVs moving to the e-bus for charging. The first objective is to charge more low-power EVs with the limited energy volume of the e-buses and the second objective is to reduce the range anxiety of the low-power EV drivers. Observing that existing algorithm is time-consuming or inefficient, which cannot be applied for the problem instance with a large number of e-buses and EVs, we design a low-complexity approximation algorithm for the problem. Both theoretical analysis and comprehensive data-driven evaluation demonstrate that the proposed algorithm, 1) significantly optimizes the optimization objectives by 23.6% and 15.8% on average, and up to 34.8% and 34.0% in extreme cases, compared with the existing approximation algorithm and 2) achieves over 100x
