More than a decade ago, because of the phenomenal growth in the power of computer simulations, The University of Georgia formed the first institutional unit devoted to the use of simulations in research and teaching: The Center for simulational physics. As the simulations community expanded further, we sensed a need for a meeting place for both experienced simulators and neophytes to discuss new techniques and recent results in an environment which promoted extended discussion. As a consequence, the Center for simulational physics established an annual workshop on recent developments in computer simulation studies in condensed matter physics. This year's workshop was the eleventh in this series, and the interest shown by the scientific community demonstrates quite clearly the useful purpose which the series has served. The latest workshop was held at The University of Georgia, February 23-27, 1998, and these proceedings provide a "status report" on a number of important topics. This volume is published with the goal of timely dissemination of the material to a wider audience. We wish to offer a special thanks to IBM Corporation for their generous support of this year's workshop. This volume contains both invited papers and contributed presentations on problems in both classical and quantum condensed matter physics. Using an atomistic model that treats both translational and spin degrees of freedom, we have performed combined molecular and spin dynamics simulations to study dynamic properties of BCC iron with varying vacancy concentrations. Atomic interactions are described by an empirical many-body potential while spin interactions are handled with a Heisenberg-like Hamiltonian with a coordinate dependent exchange interaction. By calculating the Fourier transform of spatial and temporal correlation functions, vibrational and magnetic excitations have been studied. The creation of vacancies in the material has shown splitting of the characteristic transverse spin-wave excitations, indicating the production of additional excitation modes. By merging two vacancies to form a nearest neighbor pair, we find that these modes become more distinct. Investigation of longitudinal spin-wave excitations reveals interactions between constituent components of the split transverse excitations.

As the international "simulations community" expanded further, we sensed a need for a meeting place for both experienced simulators and beginners to present and discuss new techniques and recent results in an envi ronment which promoted a lively exchange of information. As a consequence, the Center for simulational physics established an annual workshop on Re cent developments in computer simulation studies in condensed matter physics. This year's workshop was the 16th in this series, and the continued interest shown by the simulations community demonstrates quite clearly the useful purpose that these meetings have served. The latest workshop was held at The University of Georgia, February 24-28, 2003, and these proceedings provide a "status report" on a number of important topics. This volume is published with the goal of timely dissemination of the material to a broader audience. We wish to offer a special thanks to IBM Corporation and to the National Science Foundation for partial support of this year's workshop. This volume contains both invited papers and contributed presentations on problems in both classical and quantum condensed matter physics. It is our hope that each reader will benefit from specialized results as well as profit from exposure to new algorithms, methods of analysis, and conceptual developments.

The putative ground-state structures of 13-atom Cu and Ag clusters have been studied using ab initio molecular-dynamics (AIMD) based on density-functional theory (DFT). An ensemble of low-energy configurations, collected along the AIMD trajectory and optimized to nearest local minimum-energy configurations, were studied. An analysis of the results suggests the existence of low-symmetric bilayer structures as strong candidates for the putative ground-state structure of Cu 13 and Ag 13 clusters. These bilayer structures are markedly different from a buckled bi-planar (BBP) configuration and energetically favorable, by about 0.4-0.5 eV, than the latter proposed earlier by others. Our study reveals that the structure of the resulting putative global-minimum configuration is essentially independent of the nature of basis functions (i.e., plane waves vs. pseudoatomic orbitals) employed in the calculations, for a given exchange-correlation functional. The structural configurations obtained from plane-wave-based DFT calculations show a noticeably tighter or dense first-shell of Cu and Ag atoms. A comparison of our results with recent full-potential DFT simulations is presented.

As the role of computer simulations began to increase in importance, we sensed a need for a "meeting place" for both experienced simulators and neophytes to discuss new techniques and results in an evironment which promotes extended discussion. As a consequence of these concerns, The Center for simulational physics established an annual workshop on recent developments in computer simulation studies in condensed-matter physics. This year's workshop was the fifth in this series and the interest which the scientific community has shown demonstrates quite clearly the useful purpose which the series has served. The workshop was held at the University of Georgia, February 17-21, 1992, and these proceedings form a record of the workshop which is published with the goal of timely dissemination of the papers to a wider audience. The proceedings are divided into four parts. The first part contains invited papers which deal with simulational studies of classical systems and includes an introduction to some new simulation techniques and special purpose computers as well. A separate section of the proceedings is devoted to invited papers on quantum systems including new results for strongly correlated electron and quan tum spin models. The third section is comprised of a single, invited description of a newly developed software shell designed for running parallel programs. The contributed presentations comprise the final chapter.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness beyond the age of 50 years. The most common pathogenic mechanism that leads to AMD is choroidal neovascularization (CNV). CNV is produced by accumulation of residual material caused by aging of retinal pigment epithelium cells (RPE). The RPE is a phagocytic system that is essential for renewal of photoreceptors (rods and cones). With time, incompletely degraded membrane material builds up in the form of lipofuscin. Lipofuscin is made of free-radical-damaged protein and fat, which forms not only in AMD, but also Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. The study of lipofuscin formation and growth is important, because of their association with cellular aging. We introduce a model of non-equilibrium cluster growth and aggregation that we have developed for studying the formation and growth of lipofuscin in the aging RPE. Our results agree with a linear growth of the number of lipofuscin granules with age. We apply the dynamic scaling approach to our model and find excellent data collapse for the cluster size distribution. An unusual feature of our model is that while small particles are removed from the RPE the larger ones become fixed and grow by aggregation. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B. V.
