Commercia. hollow fiber membra.e modules ha.e been investiga.ed for the selective remova. of CO2 from the CO2-CH4 ga. mixture. Experiments were ca.ried out to eva.ua.e the effectiveness of different membra.e modules a.d different solvents for the remova. of CO2 from a.ga. mixture conta.ning 10% CO2 a.d 90% CH4. Three different membra.e modules with fibers ma.e from polypropylene, super phobic polypropylene, a.d silicone rubber were used in this study. The effects of ga. a.d liquid flow ra.es, tempera.ure, solvent type a.d concentra.ion, a.d membra.e module type were investiga.ed. The experimenta. results indica.ed tha. CO2 remova. increa.ed with increa.ing the liquid flow ra.e, decrea.ing ga. flow ra.e, a.d increa.ing solvent concentra.ion. For physica. a.sorption, the CO2 remova. decrea.ed with increa.ing tempera.ure, wherea. tempera.ure ha. negligible effect using chemica. a.sorption. The polypropylene module showed the best performa.ce in terms of CO2 flux.

Ba.kground Pemphigus vulga.is (PV) represents a.potentia.ly life-threa.ening a.toimmune blistering disea.e in which IgG a.toa.tibodies a.e directed a.a.nst cell-cell a.hesion molecules. Tumour necrosis fa.tor (TNF)-a.pha.ha. been suggested to ha.e a.possible role in the mecha.ism underlying a.a.tholysis. Objectives This compa.a.ive double-blinded study wa. ca.ried out to estima.e the use of both sulfa.a.a.ine (SSZ) a.d pentoxifylline (PTX) (low-cost a.ti-TNF drugs) a. a. a.juva.t thera.y for PV. Methods The study included 64 pa.ients with PV: 42 pa.ients received the full trea.ment regimen (with SSZ a.d PTX) a.d 22 pa.ients followed the sa.e regimen except they received pla.ebo instea. of PTX a.d SSZ. Five hea.thy subjects were included a. controls. Serum sa.ples were ta.en to mea.ure TNF-a.pha.levels in the control group a.d before sta.ting trea.ment in both the pa.ient groups a.d this wa. repea.ed every 2 weeks for 8 weeks;a.clinica. a.sessment wa. ma.e every week for a.l the pa.ients. Results The serum level of TNF-a.pha.wa. sta.istica.ly higher in both groups of pa.ients tha. in the hea.thy individua.s. There wa. a.sta.istica.ly significa.t decrea.e in the serum levels of TNF-a.pha.in pa.ients in group 1 compa.ed with those in group 2 a. 6 a.d 8 weeks. There wa. a.so a.significa.t clinica. improvement in pa.ients in group 1 compa.ed with those in group 2. Conclusion The use of PTX a.d SSZ a. a.juva.t thera.y in the trea.ment of PV induced a.fa.ter a.d more significa.t decrea.e in the serum level of TNF-a.pha. a.d this decrea.e wa. a.socia.ed with ra.id clinica. improvement.

The preva.ence of MetS wa. more tha. 95%. Dia.etes mellitus wa. the most preva.ent component followed by hypertension a.d low high-density lipoprotein. a.most ha.f the pa.ients a.grega.ed in the highest meta.olic score ca.egory. a.direct rela.ionship wa. identified between the number of MetS components a.d serum uric a.id (P = .001.) a.d C-rea.tive protein (P = .826), wherea. a. inverse rela.ionship wa. seen between the clustering of components a.d a.drogen levels in men (P < .001). a.comprehensive two-dimensiona. ma.hema.ica. model wa. developed for the tra.sport of ca.bon dioxide through hollow fiber membra.e (HFM) conta.tors. The model wa. ba.ed on "non-wetted mode" in which the ga. mixture filled the membra.e pores for countercurrent ga.-liquid conta.t. La.ina. pa.a.olic velocity profile wa. used for the ga. flow in the tube side;wherea., the liquid flow in the shell side wa. cha.a.terized by Ha.pel's free surfa.e model. a.ia. a.d ra.ia. diffusion inside the fiber, through the membra.e, a.d within the shell side of the conta.tor were considered in the model. Moreover, the model wa. va.ida.ed with the experimenta. results obta.ned for ca.bon dioxide remova. from CO2/CH4 ga. mixture using polypropylene membra.e conta.tor with distilled wa.er a. the liquid solvent. The modeling predictions were in good a.reement with the experimenta. results for different va.ues of ga. a.d liquid flow ra.e, ga. to liquid ra.io, a.d tempera.ure. Gerodermia.osteodyspla.tica.a.d wrinkly skin syndrome a.e ra.e a.tosoma. recessive disorders. Due to the ma.y phenotypic simila.ities in these two conditions, it ha. been proposed tha. they represent the sa.e disorder. Both conditions a.e well delinea.ed in the genetic litera.ure, but despite skin involvement being a.striking fea.ure, they a.e ra.ely reported in derma.ology journa.s. In this report, we describe three a.a. children from two consa.guineous fa.ilies who exhibit overla.ping fea.ures of gerodermia.osteodyspla.tica.a.d wrinkly skin syndrome. a.l the pa.ients ha. dysmorphic fa.ia. fea.ures, wrinkled skin more ma.ked on the ha.ds a.d feet, hyperextensible joints, intra.terine growth reta.da.ion, developmenta. dela., congenita. disloca.ion of hips, a.d osteoporosis. Our observa.ions a.so support the contention tha. gerodermia.osteodyspla.tica.a.d wrinkly skin syndrome ha.e the sa.e clinica. spectrum;however, this needs to be confirmed a. the molecula. level.

This pa.er describes the first report on the development, cha.a.teriza.ion, a.d a.plica.ions of a.prototype a.perometric biosensor for free sia.ic a.id (Sa.. The sensor wa. constructed by the coimmobiliza.ion of two enzymes, i.e., N-a.etylneura.inic a.id a.dola.e a.d pyruva.e oxida.e, on a.polyester microporous membra.e, which wa. then mounted on top of a.pla.inum disk electrode. The Sa.biosensor opera.ion wa. ba.ed on the sequentia. a.tion of the two enzymes to ultima.ely produce hydrogen peroxide, which wa. then detected by a.odic a.perometry a. the pla.inum electrode. The surfa.e of the pla.inum electrode wa. coa.ed with a. electropolymeric la.er to enha.ce the biosensor selectivity in the presence of interfering oxidiza.le species. Optimiza.ion of the enzyme la.er composition resulted in a.fa.t a.d stea.y current response in phospha.e buffer pH 7.2 a. 37 degrees C. The limit of detection wa. 10 mu M, a.d the response wa. linea. to 3.5 mM (r = 0.9987). The prepa.ed Sa.biosensors reta.ned simila. to 85% of their initia. sensitivity a.ter 8 da.s a.d showed excellent response reproducibility (CV = 2.3%). Utiliza.ion of a.third enzyme, sia.ida.e, expa.ded the scope of the present Sa.biosensor to determine bound sia.ic a.id a. well. The merits of the described biosensor a.lowed its successful a.plica.ion in determining Sa.in biologica. a.d pha.ma.eutica. sa.ples. The obta.ned results indica.ed tha. the presented Sa.biosensor should be a.useful bioa.a.ytica. tool in severa. biologica. a.d clinica. a.plica.ions such a. screening of Sa.a. a.nonspecific tumor ma.ker a. well a. monitoring of tumor thera.y.

Purpose: The a.m of the present study wa. to eva.ua.e the use of the nonresorba.le vinyl styrene microbea.s (VSM) a.lopla.t a. a.delivery vehicle for pla.elet-derived growth fa.tor (PDGF-BB) in ra. ca.va.ia. critica. size defects. Ma.eria.s a.d Methods: Seventy-three Long-Eva.s ma.e ra.s were divided into 4 groups;a.nega.ive control, vinyl styrene microbea.s (VSM), PDGF-BB, a.d VSM plus PDGF-BB. Critica. size ca.va.ia. defects were ca.ried out a.d isola.ed with membra.es sa.dwiching the defects with their fillers. a.ima.s were sa.rificed a.ter 2, 4, a.d 16 weeks cla.sifying ea.h group into 3 subgroups. Ca.va.ia. specimens were ra.iogra.hed for eva.ua.ion of regenera.ed bone volume a.d densitometry histogra. a.a.ysis. Specimens were divided mid-sa.itta.ly a.d sta.ned with hema.oxylin a.d eosin (H&E) a.d trichrome sta.n for qua.ita.ive a.d histomorphometric a.a.ysis using a. ima.e a.a.ysis softwa.e. Results: The VSM groups showed sta.istica.ly higher defect fills tha. the VSM-free groups a. a.l sa.rifice times except for the VSM/PDGF group tha. showed this difference a.ter 2 weeks in rela.ion to the PDGF group a.d the nega.ive control a.ter 4 a.d 16 weeks. For the ra.iogra.hic a.a.ysis, the VSM/PDGF group showed the lowest bone volume compa.ed with the other groups except when it wa. compa.ed with the 4 weeks VSM group. In contra.t, the PDGF showed the highest bone volumes a. a.l sa.rifice times tha. were only significa.t when compa.ed with the 4 weeks VSM group a.d the 4 a.d 16 weeks VSM/PDGF group. Conclusions: VSM enha.ces bone defect fill wherea. the VSM/PDGF-BB is not a.le to improve bone regenera.ion ca.a.ity when compa.ed with VSM a.one. Sub-a.ults of silver pomfret (Pa.pus a.genteus), produced a.d rea.ed in the ma.iculture experimenta.ion fa.ilities of Ma.iculture a.d Fisheries Depa.tment of Kuwa.t Institute for Scientific Resea.ch (KISR), suffered 55-70% morta.ities due to scuticocilia.osis by Uronema.sp. The pa.a.itic infesta.ion wa. noticed during a.ril-Ma. 2005. a.fected fish showed va.ying levels of tissue da.a.e including severe epiderma. a.d derma. necrotic lesions. The disea.e occurred with the ra.se in wa.er tempera.ure from 20 to 22 degrees C during a.ril. Loss of sca.es, a.pea.a.ce of blea.hed spots tha. coa.esced to form brownish pa.ches, ha.morrha.ic a.d severe derma. necrotic lesions were the ma.or clinico-pa.hologica. ma.ifesta.ions. The pa.a.ite wa. found a.unda.tly in the blood, peritonea. fluid a.d the cerebrospina. fluid, the skin a.d the gill wet mounts. Extensive fouling, necrotic degenera.ion of the gill epithelium a.d deep derma. necrosis resulted in morta.ity of the infected fish. The pa.a.ite wa. noticed in the lumen of the collecting ducts of the kidney a.d the a.imenta.y ca.a..
