We report carbon isotopic values in total organic carbon (TOC) and pyrogenic carbon (PyC) preserved in two sediment cores from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The delta C-13 values of PyC ranged from -10.9 parts per thousand to -17.2 parts per thousand, with distinct differences from the delta C-13 values of TOC (-24.1 parts per thousand to -26.1 parts per thousand) in the sediments. The radiocarbon ages of PyC were 9,128 and 8,410 years old on average in the two cores but were thousands of years younger than the ages of TOC at the same core depth. These isotopic records provide strong evidence indicating that the PyC was produced from ancient wildfires predominantly in C-4 vegetation and transported to Antarctica in the atmosphere. We suggest that ancient wildfires in predominantly C-4 grasslands likely frequently occurred on a large scale and at a high intensity in the Southern Hemisphere during the last deglaciation to mid-Holocene period of 14,800-4,200 years ago.

MgO ceramic films were deposited as insulating films for thin film sensors by electron beam evaporation on Ni-based substrate at 25 degrees C, 200 degrees C and 300 degrees C (denoted as MgO-25, MgO-200, and MgO-300). The structures and morphologies of the MgO ceramic films were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, which indicated that MgO films exhibited (111) and (222) preferential orientation growth and a more compact microstructure with increasing substrate temperature. Furthermore, the insulation resistance of MgO films was enhanced at higher substrate temperature, the MgO-300 ceramic film increased by approximately one order of magnitude compared to MgO-25 ceramic film. Notably, the insulation resistance of the MgO-300 ceramic film was 1.5 M Omega when the test temperature reached 1000 degrees C. Additionally, the influence of annealing on the electrical insulation properties of MgO-300 was evaluated via a leakage current test at 25-1000 degrees C. The results showed that the stability of the electrical insulation performance was improved mainly due to the growth of grains and repair of defects. Moreover, the conductivity was below 1.2 x 10(-6) S/m and the calculated insulation resistance was greater than 0.55 M Omega at 1000 degrees C after the fourth annealing, which displays that the relative error of the apparent resistance is less than 0.03% by the shunt circuit law. Therefore, their excellent electrical insulation performance demonstrated that MgO films have the potential to be employed as an insulating layer for thin film sensors at high temperature.

Currently, influenza PA(N) endonuclease has become an attractive target for development of new drugs to treat influenza infections. Herein we report the discovery of new PA(N) endonuclease inhibitors derived from a chelating agent dopamine moiety. A series of dopamine amide derivatives and their conformationally constrained 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-6,7-diol-based analogs were elaborated and assayed against influenza virus A/WSN/33 (H1N1). Most compounds exhibited moderate to excellent antiviral activities, generating a preliminary SARs. Among them, compounds 14 and 19 showed stronger anti-IAV activity compared with the reference Peramivir. Moreover, 14 and 19 demonstrated a concentration-dependent inhibition of PA(N) endonuclease based on both FRET assay and SPR assay. Docking studies were also performed to elucidate the binding mode of 14 and 19 with the PA(N) protein and to identify amino acids involved in their mechanism of action, which were well consistent with the biological data. IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is characterized by deposition of galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) in glomerular mesangium associated with mucosal immune disorders. Since environmental pollution has been associated with the progression of chronic kidney disease in the general population, we specifically investigated the influence of exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 mm in diameter (PM2.5) on IgAN progression. Patients with biopsy-proven primary IgAN were recruited from seven Chinese kidney centers. PM2.5 exposure from 1998 to 2016 was derived from satellite aerosol optical depth data and a total of 1,979 patients with IgAN, including 994 males were enrolled. The PM2.5 exposure levels for patients from different provinces varied but, in general, the PM2.5 exposure levels among patients from the north were higher than those among patients from the south. The severity of PM2.5 exposure in different regions was correlated with regional kidney failure burden. In addition, each 10 mg/m3 increase in annual average concentration of PM2.5 exposure before study entry (Hazard Ratio, 1.14;95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.22) or time-varying PM2.5 exposure after study entry (1.10;1.01-1.18) were associated with increased kidney failure risk after adjustment for age, gender, estimated glomerular filtration rate, urine protein, uric acid, hemoglobin, mean arterial pressure, Oxford classification, glucocorticoid and renin-angiotensin system blocker therapy. The associations were robust when the time period, risk factors of cardiovascular diseases or city size were further adjusted on the basis of the above model. Thus, our results suggest that PM2.5 is an independent risk factor for kidney failure in patients with IgAN, but these findings will require validation in more diverse populations and other geographic regions.
