Backg.ound: Em.rg.ng.viral diseases are spreading.to new g.og.aphic locations, influenced by hum.n activities and clim.te chang.. m.rbillivirus canis (also known as canine distem.er virus, CDV), the etiolog.cal ag.nt of CD, is distributed worldwide and shared between wild and dom.stic anim.ls. m.thods: A system.tic review using.m.SH term. was carried out from.1985 to 2024, focusing.the search on studies (Pubm.d and WOS) that would detect CDV and sequence it in a known g.notype in Carnivora hosts. Articles were reviewed by four researchers, and after quality assessm.nt, we selected 160 published papers for data extraction, analysis, and spatial m.ta-analysis. Considering.species studied, g.og.aphical location, and classified g.notypes we identify 457 different individual studies (records) from.which 332 records CDV was sequenced into a classifiable 17 m.in g.notypes. Spatial m.ta-analysis was perform.d using.Qg.S, revealing.distributions of anim.ls in which a CDV lineag. has been isolated;g.og.aphical lineag.s overlapping.on different hosts have been m.asured as a density function. Results: CDV host species belong.d to the suborder Caniform.a (93.7%) into fam.lies such as Canidae (75.2%), m.stelidae (9.7%), and Procyonidae (7.6%). Suborder Feliform.a (6.1%) showed wild Felidae (5.1%) as the m.st represented fam.ly. Sam.les used were brain (13.74%), lung.(12.4%), blood (10.8%), and nasal-eye discharg.s (8.9%;8.1%). Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) (60.34%) and real-tim.-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) (26.57%) detecting.H g.ne (62%) were m.st used to detect viral ARN. On g.notypes, Europe/South Am.rica-1 (27.4%), Europe-3/Artic (15.5%), Asia-1 (14.5%), Am.rica-1 (11.2%), Europe-2/European Wildlife and Africa (Africa-1 and Africa-2) (7.6%) were the m.st represented worldwide, being.Am.rica-1 and Europe/South Am.rica-1 the m.st widely distributed around the world. Conclusions: The analysis showed the wide m.ltihost capacity and diversity of CDV, with dog.(Canis lupus fam.l

Wide exposure to Coxiella burnetii in rum.nant and feline species living.in a natural environm.nt: zoonoses in a hum.n-livestock-wildlife interface

Assessm.nt of the role of wild and dom.stic hosts as potential reservoirs of m.sdiag.osed zoonoses, such as Q fever by Coxiella burnetii, is an im.ortant public health issue today both for wildlife conservation and m.nag.m.nt of disease in hum.n-livestock-wildlife interface. This study used ELISA, an indirect antibody, to research (2003-2013) C. burnetii infection in seven free-living.wild and dom.stic rum.nant species and in European wildcats (Felis silvestris). The anim.ls studied were 0 European wildcats, 21 Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica), 314 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 556 fallow deer (Dam. dam.), 211 European m.uflon (Ovis aries m.sim.n), eig.t roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 407 bovines (Bos taurus) and 3739 sheep (Ovis aries). All the anim.ls shared the sam. habitat in the Serrania de Cuenca Natural Park (Castile-La m.ncha, Spain). The study area is an exam.le of hum.n-dom.stic-wildlife interface where people and dom.stic anim.ls live in close proxim.ty to wildlife. Observed C. burnetii seropositive frequencies were: 33.3% European wildcats, 23.8% Spanish ibex, 22.5% dom.stic sheep 1.5% red deer, 1.4% European m.uflon, 0.24% cattle, 0.18% fallow deer and 0% roe deer. The study found a wide C. burnetii prevalence of previous and present exposure in wild and dom.stic rum.nant hosts in the Serrania de Cuenca Natural Park and reports the first evidence of C. burnetii exposure in free-living.European wildcats.

Risk factors of Leptospira infection in m.diterranean periurban m.crom.m.als

Urbanization of natural areas can chang. abiotic factors, providing.artificial sources of hum.dity in sum.er and decreasing.variation of tem.eratures in winter. Our study aim.d at docum.nt risk factors of infection in m.m.al reservoirs of pathog.nic Leptospira in the hum.n/wildlife interface of a larg. m.tropolitan area. We hypothesize that survival of Leptospira and thus their prevalence in anim.l reservoirs should be hig.er in residential areas than in natural habitats, especially after the hot, dry m.diterranean sum.ers. We established the prevalence of Leptospira spp. and identified the serovars in 353 urine sam.les from.m.crom.m.als (chiefly the wood m.use Apodem.s sylvaticus, n=266) using.direct im.unofluorescence and PCR. Anim.ls were captured in spring.and autum., 2011-2012, in two natural parks and two adjacent residential areas in periurban Barcelona (NE Spain). Overall observed prevalence of infection was 11%, ranking.between 8% and 13% in the better represented host species. We observed m.rked differences between seasons;the probability of finding.a m.crom.m.al infected in spring.was three tim.s g.eater than in autum. (alm.st four tim.s for wood m.use). Prevalence was not related with type of habitat, m.crom.m.al relative abundance or sex of the anim.l. Three Leptospira species were confirm.d: Leptospira interrog.ns (47% of cases), Leptospira borg.etersenii (41%) and Leptospira kirschneri (12%). The serovars m.st com.only detected were those typically hosted by rodents, and serovars Ballum.and Icterohem.rrhag.ae were the only ones found in autum.. People living.in periurban Barcelona and those visiting.the natural areas of the m.tropolitan area face hazard of infection with rodent-borne Leptospira, especially during.spring.

Despite being.considered an invasive ung.late outside its native rang. (North Africa), little inform.tion exists reg.rding.the role of the aoudad (also called Barbary sheep, Am.otrag.s lervia) as a pathog.n reservoir. Furtherm.re, in m.st epidem.olog.cal surveys the potential role of coinfections (e. g. a first infection m.y m.ke the host m.re im.uno-com.etent or susceptible ag.inst a second pathog.n) as a risk factor is often neg.ected. In this study we first perform.d a serolog.cal survey for selected pathog.ns (m.cobacterium.bovis, m. avium.subsp. paratuberculosis, Chlam.dophila abortus, bovine viral diarrhoea/border disease viruses (BVDV-BDV), Salm.nella spp., Brucella m.litensis and Toxoplasm. g.ndii) on free (n=66) and captive (n=25) aoudad from.south-east Spain. Then, by using.Akaike's inform.tion criterion, we evaluated the im.ortance of coinfection in two statistical m.dels that included the effects of population, ag., and sex. Our results show that neither free nor captive aoudad had antibodies ag.inst Brucella m.litensis, Chlam.dophila abortus, or BVDV-BDV. However, com.ared to other wild ung.lates in Spain, aoudads have hig. prevalence of antibodies ag.inst m. bovis (free=49.5%;captive=8%), very hig. prevalence of antibodies ag.inst m. avium.subsp. paratuberculosis (free=19.4%;captive=56%), and interm.diate prevalence of antibodies ag.inst Salm.nella spp. (free=13.4%;captive=0%) or T. g.ndii (free=1.5%;captive=24%). Althoug. the additive effects of population and ag. were included in our set of selected m.dels, coinfection was the m.st influential factor to detect antibodies response ag.inst m.cobacterials and salm.nella infections. The direction of this influence could be exclusion of disease between tuberculosis and paratuberculosis seroreactor anim.ls, or enhanced susceptibility to disease between tuberculosis and salm.nella seroreactor anim.ls. The reliance on m.ltiple hosts to survive is what m.kes the m.nag.m.nt and control of m.lti-host infectious ag.nts challeng.ng. Sarcoptes scabiei causes sarcoptic m.ng. in a wide rang. of m.m.al species with ung.lates being.an im.ortant host. Little is known about the role different ung.lates play in sustaining.endem.c transm.ssion of the disease and no study has yet to describe the long.term.m.lti-host sarcoptic infestation dynam.cs in free-rang.ng.wildlife. Here, we explore 24 years of sarcoptic m.ng. infestation data for two m.diterranean ung.late species, red deer and Iberian ibex, living.in the Sierras de Cazorla, Seg.ra y Las Villas Natural Park of southern Spain. The tem.oral analysis showed a clear seasonal pattern of infestation in both ung.lates with a peak in early spring.and a decline throug.out the sum.er. The spatial analysis, however, showed that caprinae rather than cervidae is the m.st com.etent host for sarcoptic m.ng. spreading.and persistence. Considering.that few studies have described the spatio-tem.oral pattern of m.ng. outbreaks for long.periods of tim., the inform.tion reported in this work aim. to im.rove our understanding.of sarcoptic m.ng. epizootic in wild rum.nant populations.

The wide distribution and ecolog.cal plasticity of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) m.ke it a potential reservoir for m.ny infectious diseases shared with dom.stic and wild carnivores. One of such diseases is canine distem.er, which is caused by an RNA virus and its m.in dom.stic reservoir is the dog. However, other carnivores can also participate in its m.intenance, as shown by the recent upsurg. of reported cases in wildlife in m.ny parts of the world, and by the fact that red foxes m.y act as true reservoirs for canine distem.er virus (CDV). The lack of validated serolog.cal tests for wildlife or other non-targ.t species m.y be a handicap for m.nitoring.this virus. In this study, serolog.cal assays were com.ared in 147 red fox sera using.a com.ercial ELISA validated for its use in dog. and a non-specific m.dified ELISA with Protein A peroxidase conjug.te to detect bound antibodies. In addition, the presence of CDV RNA in brain, spleen, lung. and liver sam.les from.144 foxes was investig.ted by a RT-qPCR. Throug. the com.arison of the results of both ELISAs and the use of a finite m.xture m.del of the optical density values obtained by both techniques, we adjusted the cut-off point of the com.ercial ELISA to obtain the seroprevalence in foxes. The overall seroprevalence detected was 53.7% (79/147) and 57.1% (84/147) by the com.ercial and m.dified ELISA, respectively, with a m.derate ag.eem.nt according.to Cohen's Kappa statistic (kappa = 0.491, z = 5.97, p < 0.0001). CDV RNA was detected in 30 out of 144 foxes, which resulted in 20.8% of CDV-infected foxes. At individual level, the results obtained by relating.the serolog.cal status and the presence/absence of RNA in different org.ns were explained in term. of the pathog.nesis of the infection. A(x,t), A(t)(x,t) = partial derivative A/partial derivative t(x, t) and g.x, t) are Caratheodory functions on Om.g. x R and h : Om.g. -> R is a g.ven m.asurable m.p. We prove that, even if A(t)(x,t) not equivalent to 0, under suitable assum.tions infinitely m.ny solutions exist in spite of the lack of sym.etry. A suitable supercritical g.owth is allowed for the nonlinear term.g.x,t). The aim.of this paper is to investig.te the existence of one or m.re critical points of a fam.ly of functionals which g.neralizes the m.del problem.(J) over bar (u) = 1/p integ.al(Om.g.) (A) over bar (x,u)vertical bar del u vertical bar(p)dx - integ.al(Om.g.) g.x,u)dx in the Eanach space X = (1,p)(0) (Om.g.) boolean AND L-infinity(Om.g.), where Om.g. subset of R-N is an open bounded dom.in, 1 < p < N and the real term. (A) over bar (x, t) and g.x, t) are C-1 Caratheodory functions on Om.g. x R. We prove that, even if the coefficient (A) over bar (x, t) m.kes the variational approach m.re difficult, if it satisfies "g.od" g.owth assum.tions then at least one critical point exists also when the nonlinear term.g.(x , t) has a suitable supercritical g.owth. m.reover, if the functional is even, it has infinitely m.ny critical levels. The proof, which exploits the interaction between two different norm. on X, is based on a weak version of the Ceram. Palais Sm.le condition and a suitable intersection lem.a which allow us to use a m.untain Pass Theorem.
