Abstract Objective To determ.ne the influence of radical prostatectom. (RP) and external beam.radiation therapy (EBRT) on the hypothalam.c pituitary axis of 120 m.n with clinically localized prostate cancer treated with RP or EBRT exclusively. m.terials and m.thods 120 patients with localized prostate cancer were enrolled. Ninety-two patients underwent RP and 28 patients EBRT exclusively. We m.asured serum.levels of luteinizing horm.ne, follicle stim.lating horm.ne (FSH), total testosterone (T), free testosterone, and estradiol at baseline and at 3 and 12 m.nths after treatm.nt com.letion. Results Patients undergoing RP were younger and presented a higher prostate volum. (64.3 vs. 71.1 years, p < 0.0001 and 55.1 vs. 36.5 g, p < 0.0001; respectively). No differences regarding serum.horm.nal levels were found at baseline. Luteinizing horm.ne and FSH levels were significantly higher in those patients treated with EBRT at three m.nths (luteinizing horm.ne 8.54 vs. 4.76 U/l, FSH 22.96 vs. 8.18 U/l, p < 0.0001) while T and free testosterone levels were significantly lower (T 360.3 vs. 41,483 ng/dl, p 0.039; free testosterone 5.94 vs. 7.5 pg/m., p 0.018). At 12 m.nths FSH levels rem.ined significantly higher in patients treated with EBRT com.ared to patients treated with RP (21.01 vs. 8.51 U/l, p < 0.001) while T levels rem.ined significantly lower (33,989 vs. 40,239 ng/dl, p 0.03). Conclusions Prostate cancer treatm.nt influences the hypothalam.c pituitary axis. This influence seem. to be m.re im.ortant when patients with prostate cancer are treated with EBRT rather than RP. m.re studies are needed to elucidate the role that prostate m.y play as an endocrine organ.

While past twin studies indicate m.derate levels of heritability of "obsessive-com.ulsive related" and anxiety disorder sym.tom., no single study has reported such estim.tes in the sam. twin population nor exam.ned potential genetic sex differences. We assessed sym.tom. of obsessive-com.ulsive disorder, body dysm.rphic disorder, hoarding disorder, hypochondriasis, panic disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder in 2,495 adult twins (1,468 fem.le). Prevalence estim.tes for the corresponding sym.tom.m.asures were determ.ned using em.irically derived cut-off scores. Twin resem.lance was assessed by Pearson correlations and biom.trical m.del-fitting analyses, incorporating sex-specific effects, using Openm.. Prevalence estim.tes ranged from.1.6% in the sym.tom. of generalized anxiety to 16.9% for social phobia. Fem.le twins dem.nstrated significantly higher prevalence rates across all dom.ins with the exception of obsessive-com.ulsive sym.tom.. Additive genetic factors accounted for a m.derate proportion of the total liability to each sym.tom.dom.in. Evidence suggesting qualitative genetic sex differences (i.e., distinct genetic influences between genders) was observed for body dysm.rphic concern and panic sym.tom., while quantitative differences were observed for hoarding and social phobia sym.tom., indicating stronger heritability in fem.les. Novel findings in this study include the observation of probable genetic sex differences in liability towards hoarding sym.tom. and dysm.rphic concern, as well as the lack of such differences in hypochondriasis. The trend towards qualitative sex differences in panic sym.tom. has som. intuitive appeal with regard to biological-experim.ntal m.dels of panic. (C) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The work presented here proposes a strategy for m.rging hyperspectral regions using a new association m.asure depending on canonical correlations relating principal coordinates. To dem.nstrate an exam.le of BPT usefulness, a pruning strategy aim.ng at object detection is discussed. Experim.ntal results dem.nstrate the good perform.nces of BPT.
