A new type of gel polymer electrolyte composed of free-standing aramid nanofibers was used to fabricate allsolid-state near-infrared (NIR) electrochromic devices for NIR sheltering applications. This new type of gel polymer electrolyte showed excellent mechanical and heat endurance compared with currently available gel polymer electrolytes. The good film-forming ability of the aramid nanofibers makes assembling the electrochromic devices more convenient. The as-fabricated device showed an optical modulation of about 40% at 980 nm and achieved a coloration efficiency of 79.5 cm(2)C(-1), values that are larger than those previously reported for other electrochromic devices with similar structures. It is expected that aramid nanofibers-LiCIO4-based electrolyte films with high mechanical and heat endurance will have potential applications in spacecraft thermal control, optical communication, and biomedical analysis.

Objective: The purpose of this work was to investigate the relationship between the geometric factors and the hemodynamics of the stenotic carotid ***: We retrospectively reviewed data of patients with carotid stenosis (40%-95%). The Navier-Stokes equations were solved using ANSYS CFX 18.0. Correlation analysis was based on Spearman's test. Geometric variables (p < 0.1 in the univariate analysis) were entered into the logistical regression. A receiver-operating characteristics analysis was used to detect hemodynamically significant lesions. Results: 81 patients (96 arteries) were evaluated. The logistic regression analysis revealed that the translesional pressure ratio was significantly correlated with the stenosis degree (OR = 1.147, p < 0.001) and the angle between internal carotid artery and external carotid artery (angle ?) (OR = 0.933, p = 0.01). The translesional wall shear stress ratio was significantly correlated with stenosis degree (OR = 1.094, p < 0.001), lesion length (OR = 0.873, p = 0.01), lumen area of internal carotid artery (OR = 0.867, p = 0.002), and lumen area of common carotid artery (OR = 1.058, p = 0.01). For predicting low translesional pressure ratio, the AUC was 0.71 (p < 0.001) for angle ?, and was 0.87 (p < 0.001) for stenosis degree. For predicting high translesional wall shear stress ratio, the AUC was 0.62 (p = 0.04) for lumen area of internal carotid artery, and was 0.77 (p < 0.001) for stenosis ***: Apart from stenosis degree, other geometric characteristics of lesions may also have an influence on hemodynamics of the stenotic carotid artery.

Thallium (Tl) is a trace metal of severe toxicity. Its health concerns via consumption of contaminated vegetables have often been overlooked or underestimated. This study was designed to gain insight into the actual level and distribution characteristics of Tl and metal (loid)s (Pb, Cd, Cr, Sb, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Co) in agricultural soils and common vegetables cultivated in different zones (upstream, midstream, and downstream) of a densely populated residential area in a typical mine city, which has been open-pit exploiting Tl-bearing pyrite minerals since 1960s. The results show that most of the agricultural soils exhibit contaminated levels of Tl, with Tl contents (upstream: 1.35-4.31 mg/kg, midstream: 2.43 -5.19 mg/kg, and downstream: 0.65-233 mg/kg) mostly exceeding the maximum permissible level (MPL) for agricultural land use (1 mg/kg). Sequential extraction procedure indicates that even Tl is predominantly retained in the residual fraction, significant levels of Tl are still present in the geochemically mobile fractions. Besides, metals like Cu, Cd, Mn, and Co are mostly distributed in the labile fractions. Almost all metal (loid)s in edible parts of the vegetables exceed their corresponding MPL for consumption. The chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) values calculated for inhabitants at different ages indicate non-negligible Tl risks via consumption of local vegetables, especially for children. Therefore, it is critical to establish effective measures for hazardous waste management and enforceable regulations in Tl-polluted area to mitigate potential severe impacts of Tl on human health through food chain. We recently reported that zacopride is a selective inward rectifier potassium current (IK1 ) channel agonist, suppressing ventricular arrhythmias without affecting atrial arrhythmias. The present study aimed to investigate the unique pharmacological properties of zacopride. The whole-cell patch-clamp technique was used to study IK1 currents in rat atrial myocytes and Kir2.x currents in human embryonic kidney (HEK)-293 cells transfected with inward rectifier potassium channel (Kir)2.1, Kir2.2, Kir2.3, or mutated Kir2.1 (at phosphorylation site S425L). Western immunoblots were performed to estimate the relative protein expression levels of Kir2.x in rat atria and ventricles. Results showed that zacopride did not affect the IK1 and transmembrane potential of atrial myocytes. In HEK293 cells, zacopride increased Kir2.1 homomeric channels by 40.7%±9.7% at 50 mV, but did not affect Kir2.2 and Kir2.3 homomeric channels, and Kir2.1-Kir2.2, Kir2.1-Kir2.3 and Kir2.2-Kir2.3 heteromeric channels. Western immunoblots showed that similar levels of Kir2.3 protein were expressed in rat atria and ventricles, but atrial Kir2.1 protein level was only 25% of that measured in the ventricle. In addition, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 3 receptor was undetectable, whereas 5-HT 4 receptor was weakly expressed in HEK293 cells. The Kir2.1-activating effect of zacopride in these cells was abolished by inhibition of protein kinase A (PKA), but not PKC or PKG. Furthermore, zacopride did not activate the mutant Kir2.1 channel in HEK293 cells but selectively activated the Kir2.1 homomeric channel via a PKA-dependent pathway, independent to that of the 5-HT receptor.
