Regulation of Active ZnO Species on Si-based Supports with Diverse Textural Properties for Efficient Propane Dehydrogenation

Propylene is deemed as a kind of key raw materials with significant value in industrial production. Highly dispersed Zn species are served as active sites in catalyzing propane dehydrogenation reaction (PDH). More importantly, the morphology and textural properties of Si-based support exert the great influence on the formation of active Zn species. Herein, active Zn species were dispersed on macroporous commercial SiO2, mesoporous siliceous materials (SBA-15, MCF, DMSN, KIT-6), and microporous silicalite-1 (S-1), respectively. Characterization result indicated that the dispersed active ZnO species were prone to be formed on S-1, which could be attributed to the confinement effect of micropores in S-1 and the abundant Si-OH groups interacted with Zn2+ species. As a result, the optimal ZnOA/S-1 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity (propane conversion of 40.4 %, propylene selectivity of 96.0 %, 550 degrees C, WHSV=0.47 h(-1)) during PDH process. Furthermore, the relatively considerable performance of ZnOA/S-1 catalysts could help to offer a guidance on the design of efficient and low-cost catalysts for PDH reaction.

How Do Multimodal Large Language Models Handle Complex Multimodal Reasoning? Placing Them in An Extensible Escape Game

The rapid advancing of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has spurred interest in complex multimodal reasoning tasks in the real-world and virtual environment, which require coordinating multiple abilities, including visual perception, visual reasoning, spatial awareness, and target deduction. However, existing evaluations primarily assess the final task completion, often degrading assessments to isolated abilities such as visual grounding and visual question answering. Less attention is given to comprehensively and quantitatively analyzing reasoning process in multimodal environments, which is crucial for understanding model behaviors and underlying reasoning mechanisms beyond merely task success. To address this, we introduce MM-Escape, an extensible benchmark for investigating multimodal reasoning, inspired by real-world escape games. MM-Escape emphasizes intermediate model behaviors alongside final task completion. To achieve this, we develop EscapeCraft, a customizable and open environment that enables models to engage in free-form exploration for assessing multimodal reasoning. Extensive experiments show that MLLMs, regardless of scale, can successfully complete the simplest room escape tasks, with some exhibiting human-like exploration strategies. Yet, performance dramatically drops as task difficulty increases. Moreover, we observe that performance bottlenecks vary across models, revealing distinct failure modes and limitations in their multimodal reasoning abilities, such as repetitive trajectories without adaptive exploration, getting stuck in corners due to poor visual spatial awareness, and ineffective use of acquired props, such as the key. After the new coronavirus has undergone multiple mutations, its infectivity and severity have greatly increased, which has caused great threats and inconvenience to people’s production and life. In order to disinfect the isolated area comprehensively, a control system of disinfection robot for epidemic prevention and control is designed. The robot takes STM32 as the main controller, collects and analyses the environmental information by lidar EKF-SLAM. In addition, Improved Ant Colony Algorithm is used for optimal path planning, and 3-DOF robotic arm is carried out to sanitize the designated area. The system can achieve the functions such as mapping, real-time localization, robot distribution and disinfection. The feasibility and superiority of the 3D reconstruction, path planning algorithm and end-effector pose control method are verified by MATLAB simulation. It can reduce the contact frequency of the crowd and the workload of the disinfection staff, and making contributions to epidemic prevention and control further.

PROGRESSIVE MIXED-PRECISION DECODING FOR EFFICIENT LLM INFERENCE

Despite the great potential of large language models (LLMs), deploying them on resource-constrained devices is challenging due to high computational and memory demands. Quantization has emerged as an effective solution by storing weights in lower precision. However, Post-Training Quantization (PTQ) at extremely low precisions (i.e., 2/3-bit) still incurs severe performance degradation. In this work, we argue that existing approaches fail to explore the diversity in computational patterns, redundancy, and sensitivity to approximations of the different phases of LLM inference, resorting to a uniform quantization policy throughout. Instead, we propose a novel phase-aware method that selectively allocates precision during different phases of LLM inference, achieving both strong context extraction during prefill and efficient memory bandwidth utilization during decoding. To further address the memory-boundedness of the decoding phase, we introduce Progressive Mixed-Precision Decoding (PMPD), a technique that enables the gradual lowering of precision deeper in the generated sequence, together with a spectrum of precision-switching schedulers that dynamically drive the precision-lowering decisions in either task-adaptive or prompt-adaptive manner. Extensive evaluation across diverse language tasks shows that when targeting Nvidia GPUs, PMPD achieves 1.4−12.2× speedup in LLM linear layers over fp16 models and up to 1.41× over uniform quantization. When targeting an LLM-optimized NPU, our approach delivers a throughput gain of 3.8−8.0× over fp16 models and up to 1.54× over uniform quantization approaches while preserving the output quality. The process of raise boring (or back reaming) has been successfully employed for vertical mine development. The technology has successfully evolved from early small borehole diameter less than 2m to large diameter greater than 8m without incident. However, in our developed raise boring machines, the threaded joints connecting reamers and drill rods suffered several fracture accidents during reaming in different geological and geotechnical conditions. Under this background, it is undoubtedly of great engineering value to explore the failure mechanisms and put forward systematic quality control and risk control measures. The fractured threaded joints were visually examined on-site, and then examined in the laboratory using fractographic and metallographic examination, mechanical testing and chemical composition analysis. Firstly, the end faces of threaded joints could not to be installed to fit the end faces of spindles due to over-specified tolerances or insufficient preload. Secondly, it was found that the manganese (Mn) contents in material samples are higher than the national standards values. Thirdly, the heat treatment of water-quenching of workpieces perhaps caused a certain degree of residual stresses. Clearly this systematic inspection suggested we should take overall improvements to eliminate the potential failure mechanisms. After check and measurement of product and process performance, the cause-and-effect relationships undoubtedly were complex and multifaceted. Therefore, the component was redesigned using revamping methods including material compositions upgrade, fitting tolerances control, optimization of heat treatment process. Moreover, a systems approach and the institution of quality management system including increasing the preload, adding anti-dropping device and executing a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle were implemented. Through this investigation and recommendations, the device has been in operation for more than two years without any problems.

Sea Surface Salinity Anomaly in the Bay of Bengal during the 2010 Extremely Negative IOD Event

Based on Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) data and the Ocean Reanalysis System 5 (ORAS5) dataset, positive salinity anomalies exceeding 2 psu in the northern Bay of Bengal (BoB) and negative salinity anomalies with the peak of the freshening anomalies reaching -2 psu around Sri Lanka were observed in autumn 2010. Here, an analysis of the anomalous salt budget revealed that anomalous horizontal advection contributed most to the variability in salinity in the BoB. With the development of La Nina and negative Indian Ocean dipole (nIOD) in summer and autumn, the strong summer monsoon current and Wyrtki jet combined with the anomalous basin-scale cyclonic circulation led to more high-salinity water entering the northern BoB. In addition, more freshwater was transported southward along the eastern coast of India by east Indian coastal current (EICC) in autumn, resulting in extremely negative salinity anomalies around Sri Lanka and positive salinity anomalies in the northern BoB. Moreover, the freshwater around Sri Lanka was carried farther into the southeastern Arabian Sea by the west Indian coastal current (WICC) in November, which affected the salinity stratification in winter and then influenced the variation of the Arabian Sea Mini Warm Pool (ASMWP) in the following spring. The ASMWP could affect the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) through its influence on the monsoon onset vortex (MOV) over the southeast Arabian Sea (SEAS).

Background: Reynoutria multiflora (Thunb.) Moldenke (Polygonum multiflorum Thunb, PM) is a medicinal plant that was an element of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries as a treatment for a wide range of conditions. Recent studies reported that PM suppressed prostate cancer growth in an AR-dependent manner. However, its role and mechanism in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer remain to be explored. This study aims to explore the anti-tumor role and potential mechanism of PM on prostate cancer. Methods: Cell viability, colony formation, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), and wound-healing assays were conducted to evaluate the tumor suppression effect of PM on lethal prostate cancer models in vitro. A xenograft mice model was established to detect the impact of PM on tumor growth and evaluate its biosafety in vivo. Integrative network pharmacology, RNA-seq, and bioinformatics were applied to determine the mechanisms of PM in prostate cancer. Molecular docking, cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA), CRISPR-Cas13, RT-qPCR, and WB were collaboratively employed to identify the potential anti-tumor ingredient derived from PM and its corresponding targets. Results: PM significantly suppressed the growth of prostate cancer and sensitized prostate cancer to AR antagonists. Mechanistically, PM induced G2/M-phase cell-cycle arrest by modulating the phosphorylation of CDK1. Additionally, polygalacic acid derived from PM and its structural analog suppress prostate cancer growth by targeting CDC25B, a master regulator of the cell cycle that governs CDK1 phosphorylation. Conclusion: PM and its ingredient polygalacic acid suppress lethal prostate cancer growth by regulating the CDC25B-CDK1 axis to induce cell cycle arrest.

The holding pole is a kind of special lifting machinery, which is widely used in the erection of power transmission tower. The holding pole belongs to the highrise structure, its stability problem is particularly prominent. Due to the high safety requirements, it is particularly important to conduct in-depth mechanical analysis before design, construction and application. For the holding pole, it has been adopted the balanced lifting as far as possible, however, the construction process will inevitably appear unbalanced lifting. Therefore, two working conditions for the holding pole, namely balanced lifting and unbalanced lifting, are discussed based on the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in this paper. In addition, introducing the Sparse Residual (SR) learning method to accelerate the training of the applied Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) network and avoid over-fitting, which can provide the advanced interfere for the unbalanced lifting through the real-time series data collected by accelerometer sensor. Finally, the experimental results from a project case verify the efficiency and robustness of proposed approaches.

STREAMINGBENCH: ASSESSING THE GAP FOR MLLMS TO ACHIEVE STREAMING VIDEO UNDERSTANDING

The rapid development of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has expanded their capabilities from image comprehension to video understanding. However, most of these MLLMs focus primarily on offline video comprehension, necessitating extensive processing of all video frames before any queries can be made. This presents a significant gap compared to the human ability to watch, listen, think, and respond to streaming inputs in real time, highlighting the limitations of current MLLMs. In this paper, we introduce StreamingBench, the first comprehensive benchmark designed to evaluate the streaming video understanding capabilities of MLLMs. StreamingBench assesses three core aspects of streaming video understanding: (1) real-time visual understanding, (2) omni-source understanding, and (3) contextual understanding. The benchmark consists of 18 tasks, featuring 900 videos and 4,500 human-curated QA pairs. Each video features five questions presented at different time points to simulate a continuous streaming scenario. We conduct experiments on StreamingBench with 13 open-source and proprietary MLLMs and find that even the most advanced proprietary MLLMs like Gemini 1.5 Pro and GPT-4o perform significantly below human-level streaming video understanding capabilities. We hope our work can facilitate further advancements for MLLMs, empowering them to approach human-level video comprehension and interaction in more realistic scenarios.1 © 2024, CC BY.

Promoting propane dehydrogenation over Zn/hollow porous silicalite-1 catalysts via modulating the electronic structures of Pt

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) provides a promising way to meet the requirement of propylene supply, but the commonly-used Pt-based catalysts still suffer from unsatisfactory stability and deactivation. Herein, an interfacial regulation strategy is developed to construct the Cu, Pt, and Zn species modified hollow porous silicalite-1 (CuPt/ Zn-HPS-1). Owing to the regulation role of Pt, the electron-deficient [ZnOH]+ Lewis acid sites accelerated the CH activation, which was beneficial to achieve the excellent PDH performance. More importantly, the additionally introduced Cu2+ further modulated the geometric structure and electronic density of Pt, thus effectively improving the anti-sintering ability and alleviating the coke deposition. Benefiting from the interfacial regulation and Lewis active [ZnOH]+ sites, the optimal CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic PDH performance with the initial propane conversion of 30.4 % and propylene selectivity of 99.0 %. The CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 also demonstrated robust recycling stability in reaction-regeneration cycling test with the smaller deactivation rate constant. This work affords a strategy for improving PDH performance in practical industrial application.
