Unraveling the Influence of Equatorial Waves on Post-Monsoon Sea Surface Salinity Anomalies in the Bay of Bengal

In this study, we investigate the connection between planetary equatorial waves, modulated by the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) and El Ni & ntilde;o Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the interannual variabilities of the salinity distribution in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) in October-December (OND), along with its associated dynamics, using satellite and reanalysis datasets. In OND 2010 and 2016 (1994, 1997, 2006, and 2019), positive (negative) sea surface salinity anomalies (SSSAs) were distributed in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and Andaman Sea. Moreover, the southward movement of negative (positive) SSSAs along the eastern Indian coast was observed. This phenomenon was caused by large-scale anomalous currents associated with zonal wind over the EIO. During OND 2010 and 2016 (1994, 1997, 2006, and 2019), due to anomalous westerlies (easterlies) over the EIO and anomalous downwelling (upwelling) Kelvin waves, the strengthened (weakened) Wyrtki jet and the basin-scale anomalous cyclonic (anticyclonic) circulation in the BoB gave rise to positive (negative) SSSAs within the eastern EIO and Andaman Sea. In addition, the intensified (weakened) eastern Indian coastal currents led to the southward movement of negative (positive) SSSAs. It is worth noting that downwelling Kelvin waves reached the western coast of India during OND 2010 and 2016, while upwelling Kelvin waves were only confined to the eastern coast of India during OND 1994, 1997, 2006, and 2019. Furthermore, westward salinity signals associated with reflected westward Rossby waves could modulate the spatial pattern of salinity. The distribution of salinity anomalies could potentially influence the formation of the barrier layer, thereby impacting the sea surface temperature variability and local convection.

After the new coronavirus has undergone multiple mutations, its infectivity and severity have greatly increased, which has caused great threats and inconvenience to people's production and life. In order to disinfect the isolated area comprehensively, a control system of disinfection robot for epidemic prevention and control is designed. The robot takes STM32 as the main controller, collects and analyses the environmental information by lidar EKF-SLAM. In addition, Improved Ant Colony Algorithm is used for optimal path planning, and 3-DOF robotic arm is carried out to sanitize the designated area. The system can achieve the functions such as mapping, real-time localization, robot distribution and disinfection. The feasibility and superiority of the 3D reconstruction, path planning algorithm and end-effector pose control method are verified by MATLAB simulation. It can reduce the contact frequency of the crowd and the workload of the disinfection staff, and making contributions to epidemic prevention and control further. © 2022 IEEE.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have attracted significant attention in the field of cancer research as a promising class of biomarkers. However, precise, sensitive, and specific detection of miRNAs still confronts challenges due to their dynamic expression, low abundance, and high sequence similarity among families. The highly sensitive silicon nanowires (SiNWs) biosensors are limited by little interface discrepancy within the SiNWs, which has the potential to affect the final output results. In this study, the calibration of the SiNWs biosensor was initially suggested to be conducted through photo response. This approach successfully mitigated the impact of preparation and modification procedures, resulting in an enhanced correlation between the biosensor and q-PCR for the identification of breast cancer miRNA. Specifically, the correlation coefficient was raised from below 0.5 to above 0.8. Furthermore, the uncharged peptide nucleic acid (PNA) was used for device modification in order to address the issue of detecting miRNAs with a total length in below 0.01xPBS buffer. It was shown that the PNA probe exhibited greater sensitivity compared to the DNA probe in 0.001xPBS buffer. Significantly, the improved biosensor exhibited favorable selectivity and was capable of identifying single base mismatch. The sensor exhibited a high level of sensitivity in detecting miRNA within a concentration range of 1 fM to 10 pM when applied to actual human blood samples. The biosensor exhibited an excellent level of reproducibility in the analysis of spiked samples, achieving a recovery rate of 91 %, without requiring RNA extraction or amplification procedures. The biosensor has the capability to directly detect miRNA in authentic clinical samples, hence demonstrating significant promise for the timely diagnosis of cancer via the use of miRNA as biomarkers.

On the scheduling of lifecycle network-level pavement maintenance: modelling and applications

Pavement maintenance is a prominent issue in road traffic systems and plays a fundamental role in ensuring the safety, mobility and comfort of road networks worldwide. This paper introduces an innovative approach for scheduling network-level pavement maintenance based on mathematical planning, guided by the principle of lifecycle cost analysis (LCCA). The primary objective is to optimise pavement performance while minimising maintenance costs, ultimately achieving cost-effectiveness. In particular, the method aims to solve the '2W1H' problem (i.e. 'Which', 'When', and 'How'), which implies identifying the specific road sections, determining an appropriate maintenance timeline, and selecting the most effective maintenance treatment for long-term pavement maintenance planning. The proposed method comprises a bi-level optimisation model. The upper layer is a multi-objective optimisation model which concurrently maximising the lifecycle pavement performance while minimising the lifecycle costs;the lower layer evaluates the impact of pavement maintenance operations on travellers' route choice behaviour by employing the user equilibrium problem to determine the change in user cost attributable to a specific maintenance scheduling scheme. A meta-heuristic algorithm is utilised to solve the model and acquire a Pareto front for multi-objective optimisation. Furthermore, we discuss the practical engineering applications under budgetary constraints and pavement performance requirements, followed by the consideration of parameter uncertainties in pavement performance prediction models. The numerical experiments demonstrate that our approach can deliver pavement maintenance scheduling outcomes across various scales of road networks, and highlight the promising potential of our approach for future pavement management endeavours.

The holding pole is a kind of special lifting machinery, which is widely used in the erection of power transmission tower. The holding pole belongs to the highrise structure, its stability problem is particularly prominent. Due to the high safety requirements, it is particularly important to conduct in-depth mechanical analysis before design, construction and application. For the holding pole, it has been adopted the balanced lifting as far as possible, however, the construction process will inevitably appear unbalanced lifting. Therefore, two working conditions for the holding pole, namely balanced lifting and unbalanced lifting, are discussed based on the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in this paper. In addition, introducing the Sparse Residual (SR) learning method to accelerate the training of the applied Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) network and avoid over-fitting, which can provide the advanced interfere for the unbalanced lifting through the real-time series data collected by accelerometer sensor. Finally, the experimental results from a project case verify the efficiency and robustness of proposed approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

The different beta <-> alpha phase transformation behaviors in Ti-55531 alloys with three types of preset microstructure were studied at isothermal conditions in the temperature range of 450-750 degrees C. The dilatometry was employed to record the length change of the specimen. TTT diagrams for alloys with different microstructure were plotted based on the phase fractions of transformed alpha at different temperatures. With the help of Johnson-Mehl-Avrami theory, the calculated kinetic curves were in good agreement with experimental results. The beta -> secondary alpha transformation in the alloy with preset 'beta-quenched' microstructure took place at higher nose temperature with a shorter incubation time in comparison with others, but exhibited lower steady transformation rate than that with preset 'beta + alpha(equiaxed)' microstructure. With local composition analyses, the high nose temperature was interpreted by the difference in beta stability and supersaturation. The alloy with preset 'beta + alpha(equiaxed)' microstructure showed higher transformation rate than that with preset 'beta+alpha(lamellar)' microstructure, which might be associated with the richness of defects. Water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly and sustainable hydrogen production method. The proper design of the catalyst surface is essential for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the water electrolysis process because the catalytic effect is highly dependent on contact surface properties such as the homogeneity of the coating and the stability of the catalyst, as well as the wettability of the electrolyte. Herein, hydrogel [consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cross-linked with quaternized chitosan (HACC)] loaded on nickel foam (NF) was chosen to study the OER properties of iron (Fe) in organic molecules. Owing to the unique hydrophilicity, uniformity, and stability of hydrogel, the superhydrophilic Fe-HACC-PVA/NF exhibits a low overpotential of 225 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode at 10 mA cm–2 and shows favorable stability (only 2.3% loss of current density after 24 h at 100 mA cm–2), which outperforms most Fe-based transition-metal OER catalysts. This work demonstrates that introducing a superhydrophilic catalyst surface structure to dissociate the adsorbed water is a productive strategy to enhance the performance of OER. Furthermore, the rational design of hydrophilic interface materials in this work provides a facile method to developing OER catalysts.

Improving the air bubble stability of air-entrained mortar in low air pressure environments via adopted rheology and surface tension methods

Air bubble stability in cementitious materials in low air pressure (AP) environments is influenced by the Ostwald ripening process, which causes coarsening behavior of air bubbles. This research reports the enhancement of air bubble stability in low AP via the adoption of rheology and surface tension methods. Besides, the evolution of air bubbles during the cement early hydration process is proposed. It was found that incorporating viscositymodifying agents (VMAs) and shrinkage -reducing admixtures (SRAs) resulted in improving air bubble stability by 37.7 % and 23.4 %, upon undergoing AP change from 100 to 60 kPa. Calculation of air bubbles via ripening equations under low AP revealed that VMA induced a notable decrease in the effective diffusion flux within fresh cement mortar, leading to a reduction of 9.8 % in air bubble ripening within 120 min. Conversely, SRAs were primarily aimed at reducing the initial dimensions of air bubbles.

With the bloom of Large Language Models (LLMs), Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) that incorporate LLMs with pretrained vision models have recently demonstrated impressive performance across diverse vision-language tasks. However, they fall short to comprehend context involving multiple images. A primary reason for this shortcoming is that the visual features for each images are encoded individually by frozen encoders before feeding into the LLM backbone, lacking awareness of other images and the multimodal instructions. We term this issue as prior-LLM modality isolation and propose a two phase paradigm, browse-and-concentrate1, to enable in-depth multimodal context fusion prior to feeding the features into LLMs. This paradigm initially "browses" through the inputs for essential insights, and then revisits the inputs to "concentrate" on crucial details, guided by these insights, to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the multimodal inputs. Additionally, we develop training strategies specifically to enhance the understanding of multi-image inputs. Our method markedly boosts the performance on 7 multi-image scenarios, contributing to increments on average accuracy by 2.13% and 7.60% against strong MLLMs baselines with 3B and 11B LLMs, respectively.
