The endangered red panda (Ailurus fulgens): Ecology and conservation approaches across the entire range

The red panda (Mums Mims), a vegetarian member of the order Carnivora, is distributed in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China. Many populations occur at low densities in small fragmented forest patches and face pressure from habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation, poaching, and developmental activities. Most studies have taken place In China and Nepal;few studies have been conducted in the other countries, creating a gap in documentation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to increase our knowledge regarding the ecology of the red panda and its threats. Based on literature regarding the red panda, we attempt to summarize the progress in research on its current distribution, ecology, and existing threats in the wild, highlight conservation approaches and recommend future directions. Recent studies have focused on wild populations;however, earlier studies emphasized captive. China and Nepal have a wider elevational range in red panda distribution (2000-3800 m) compared to other countries. Bamboo mixed subtropical and temperate forest and other associated variables, including a relatively high cover of bamboo, shrubs, and canopy, high densities of fallen logs, relatively steep slopes, and proximity to water sources, are ecologically important in the habitat. Due to differences in methodologies, prior estimates on population size and habitat area have varied. The genetic diversity of red pandas is high in China, but a lack of such data in other range countries makes subspecies classification unclear. Movement, microbiota, pathogens, and threats have been insufficiently documented;thus, we recommended extensive research in these areas. Furthermore, regional cooperation in research, data sharing, and policy implementation are urgently needed to protect wild panda populations.

A multi-fidelity surrogate model based on design variable correlations

Multi-fidelity surrogate (MFS) models have garnered significant attention in the field of engineering optimization due to their ability to attain the desired accuracy at a reduced cost. However, most previous MFS models employed a single scaling factor for the global design space, which posed challenges in adaptively adjusting the scaling factor within local design spaces. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel MFS model based on design variable correlations (MFS-DVC). MFS-DVC introduces local characteristics to the scaling factors by leveraging correlations between design variables, enabling adaptive adjustments of the scaling factors at different positions within the design space. Moreover, MFS-DVC offers a more comprehensive exploration of relationships and information among high-fidelity (HF) data points by utilizing the correlations between design variables. This enhancement contributes to improving the accuracy and robustness of the model. The performance of MFS-DVC was evaluated by comparing it with three benchmark MFS models and two single-fidelity surrogate models on 22 test functions and one engineering problem involving a hydraulic press. Additionally, the cost ratio and combination of HF and low-fidelity samples were studied to assess their impact on the performance of the MFS-DVC model. The results demonstrate that MFS-DVC consistently delivers competitive performance in terms of prediction accuracy and robustness.

Chernoff fusion using observability Gramian-centric weighting

In this work, an observability Gramian (OG)-based Chernoff fusion (CF) rule is investigated for dealing with unknown correlated probability density functions (PDFs). Specifically, we introduce a generalised uniform observability (GUO) condition, which ensures that error covariances and estimate errors are bounded under nonlinear settings within the extended Kalman filter (EKF) framework. Leveraging the GUO condition, we develop an OG-centric weighting selection method that optimises fusion weights while guaranteeing non -divergent performance using an approximated Chernoff fusion (ACF) algorithm. The resulting OG-centric weights are then embedded to develop an OG-based approximated Chernoff fusion (OGBACF) algorithm that can compute fusion weights and error covariances in parallel. Finally, we conduct simulations to demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed fusion methodology.

Genetic diversity and phylogenetic diversity reflect the evolutionary potential and history of species, respectively. However, the levels and spatial patterns of genetic and phylogenetic diversity of wildlife at the regional scale have largely remained unclear. Here, we performed meta-analyses of genetic diversity in Chinese terrestrial vertebrates based on three genetic markers and investigated their phylogenetic diversity based on a dated phylogenetic tree of 2461 species. We detected strong positive spatial correlations among mitochondrial DNA-based genetic diversity, phylogenetic diversity, and species richness. Moreover, the terrestrial vertebrates harbored higher genetic and phylogenetic diversity in South China and Southwest China than in other regions. Last, climatic factors (precipitation and temperature) had significant positive effects while altitude and human population density had significant negative impacts on levels of mitochondrial DNA-based genetic diversity in most cases. Our findings will help guide national-level genetic diversity conservation plans and a post-2020 biodiversity conservation framework.

Seasonal dynamics of parasitism and stress physiology in wild giant pandas

Many factors, including the inner status of the individuals and external environment, can influence the parasite infections and stress physiology in mammals. Here, we explored the influence of the sex, age, reproductive season and seasonal food availability on the parasitism and stress physiology in wild giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) through nutrient and steroid hormone analysis and parasitic infection measurement. Diet composition had significant influences on the faecal cortisol levels and parasite load of wild giant pandas. The seasonal dynamic of the cortisol levels and parasite load in faeces co-vary with the seasonal nutrient intake levels of the pandas, which concurrently arrived the peaks at the wood bamboo shoot-eating period in May (parasite infection intensity, 41.47 +/- 12.11 eggs/g of wet faeces;cortisol levels, 619.34 +/- 70.55 ng/g dry faeces) that the nutrition intake by wild pandas was the highest (protein/fibre, 69.23 +/- 9.93). Meanwhile, age class is also as an important factor to affect the parasite load and stress physiology of wild giant pandas. Cubs and sub-adults suffered more helminth burden and stress physiology than adults and old individuals. This is the first study to evaluate the inner and external factors influence on parasitism and stress physiology in wild giant pandas. The findings facilitate a better understanding of how environmental factors might influence the physiology, behaviour and health of pandas and other species and have implications for the conservation and management of the endangered species.

An automatic method using MFCC features for sleep stage classification

Sleep stage classification is a necessary step for diagnosing sleep disorders. Generally, experts use traditional methods based on every 30 seconds (s) of the biological signals, such as electrooculograms (EOGs), electrocardiograms (ECGs), electromyograms (EMGs), and electroencephalograms (EEGs), to classify sleep stages. Recently, various state-of-the-art approaches based on a deep learning model have been demonstrated to have efficient and accurate outcomes in sleep stage classification. In this paper, a novel deep convolutional neural network (CNN) combined with a long short-time memory (LSTM) model is proposed for sleep scoring tasks. A key frequency domain feature named Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is extracted from EEG and EMG signals. The proposed method can learn features from frequency domains on different bio-signal channels. It firstly extracts the MFCC features from multi-channel signals, and then inputs them to several convolutional layers and an LSTM layer. Secondly, the learned representations are fed to a fully connected layer and a softmax classifier for sleep stage classification. The experiments are conducted on two widely used sleep datasets, Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) and Vincent's University Hospital/University College Dublin Sleep Apnoea (UCDDB) to test the effectiveness of the method. The results of this study indicate that the model can perform well in the classification of sleep stages using the features of the 2-dimensional (2D) MFCC feature. The advantage of using the feature is that it can be used to input a two-dimensional data stream, which can be used to retain information about each sleep stage. Using 2D data streams can reduce the time it takes to retrieve the data from the one-dimensional stream. Another advantage of this method is that it eliminates the need for deep layers, which can help improve the performance of the model. Uniform Detectability-Aided Boundedness Analysis of Error Covariances of Kalman Filter for Time-Varying Systems

Some new results about the uniform lower and upper bounds of the predicted and filtered error covariances of the Kalman filter for linear time-varying systems from the perspective of uniform detectability are provided. First, a novel and general extendedly uniform detectability (EUD) is proposed, and the appropriate conditions to guarantee the existence of the uniform upper and lower bounds of the predicted and filtered error covariances are presented, respectively. Next, the explicit expressions of both upper and lower bounds are obtained with less conservatism. Moreover, the relations between those bounds, and their connections to estimation errors are revealed. Finally, an illustrative example is given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical developments in deriving the uniform lower and upper bounds, and a comparison with the existing results is made.

Hybrid robust-stochastic optimal scheduling for multi-objective home energy management with the consideration of uncertainties

Home energy management systems (HEMS) have transformed the traditional structure of electricity consumption on the customer side and facilitate real-time interaction between the customers and the grid. However, the HEMS scheduling is currently challenged by a variety of uncertainties, including photovoltaic (PV) output, electric vehicle (EV) charging/discharging behavior, and real-time pricing (RTP), which can seriously impact home equipment scheduling and critical objectives like total cost and users' comfort. Therefore, a hybrid robuststochastic (HRS) optimization approach for multi -objective home energy management with the consideration of uncertainties and users' comfort has been proposed in this paper. Firstly, a detailed classification and modeling of the loads in the household are carried out to facilitate the exchange between the user -side resources and the grid in a benchmark based on RTP. Then the stochastic charging/discharging behavior of EV is modeled by stochastic optimization (SO) methods, and uncertainties in PV production and RTP are modeled by robust optimization (RO) methods, making full use of the flexibility of various uncertainty parameters. Meanwhile, the users' requirements for comfort are considered, and a multi -objective function for the economy and comfort of the HEMS is established. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by case studies. The results show that the proposed HRS is effective to deal with different levels of the uncertainty parameters and ensures the users' comfort requirements in home energy system. Moreover, the users can make trade-offs between various levels of robust decisions according to their needs of economic and comfort level, thus obtaining a variety of electricity consumption decisions.

A Novel Global Set-Membership Filtering Approach for Localization of Automatic Guided Vehicles

This article investigates the localization problem of the automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system. In order to improve the reliability and flexibility of the localization process, a distributed sensor network structure is introduced to realize the localization of the AGV. Moreover, considering the influence of unknown-but-bounded noise and the accuracy requirements of the localization, a novel global set-membership filtering approach is proposed to obtain accurate localization results including a distributed set-membership filtering (DSMF) strategy and a circumscribed rectangle method. First, a DSMF strategy is designed to obtain local state estimation ellipsoids. Sufficient conditions for the existence of the state estimation ellipsoids are derived and a convex optimization process is developed to obtain the optimal local estimation ellipsoids. Then, a circumscribed rectangle method is proposed to fuse all local state estimation ellipsoids and obtain global set-membership filtering results. The proposed fusion method does not have a complicated optimization process, and can obtain more accurate estimation ellipsoids than local estimation results. Performance analysis verifies the effectiveness of the proposed global set-membership filtering approach.
