Preparation of CuSe nanoparticles by antisolvent process for doping and passivation of absorber layer in CdTe solar cells

The p-type doping and passivation of the back surface of the CdTe absorber layer are two key steps to enhance the performance of CdTe thin film solar cells. In recent years, different Cu-doped precursors (Cu (I) and Cu (II) materials) and passivation materials (elements such as Se, Cl, Al, etc.) have been investigated. However, few researchers have proposed in new materials on both doping and passivation functions for backside applications. Here, CuSe, which combines the potential of p-type doping and Se passivation functions, is proposed for the first time as a doping precursor for the CdTe absorber layer. A certain amount of CuSe nanoparticles was deposited on the back surface of the CdTe absorber layer based on an antisolvent deposition process. The results show that the optimal device open-circuit voltage of the CuSe-treated CdTe solar cell reaches 842.5 mV, which is similar to 6.5 % higher than that of the CuCl2-treated CdTe device (791.4 mV). The results of current-voltage and Mott-Schottky, impedance spectrum show that the CuSe-treated CdTe device not only achieves the purpose of p-type doping, but also introduces the passivation function of Se.

Recent developments in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown rapid progress, moving towards the goal of creating versatile MLLMs that understand inputs from various modalities. However, existing methods typically rely on joint training with paired multimodal instruction data, which is resource-intensive and challenging to extend to new modalities. In this paper, we propose a new paradigm through the model composition of existing MLLMs to create a new model that retains the modal understanding capabilities of each original model. Our basic implementation, NaiveMC, demonstrates the effectiveness of this paradigm by reusing modality encoders and merging LLM parameters. Furthermore, we introduce DAMC to address parameter interference and mismatch issues during the merging process, thereby enhancing the model performance. To facilitate research in this area, we propose MCUB, a benchmark for assessing ability of MLLMs to understand inputs from diverse modalities. Experiments on this benchmark and four other multimodal understanding tasks show significant improvements over baselines, proving that model composition can create a versatile model capable of processing inputs from multiple modalities.

Although recent studies have indicated that mutations in the gene encoding diacylglycerol kinase epsilon (DGKE) result in some proteinuria related hereditary kidney diseases, the DGKE expression pattern in the kidney and its contribution to acute kidney injury (AKI) remain unknown. Therefore, the present study was designed to detect the role of DGKE in mice with AKI. DGKE expression was time-dependently altered in the kidneys of mice with renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). Compared with wild-type (WT) mice, DGKE- overexpressing mice (Rosa26-Dgke(+/+) ) exhibited protective effects against renal IRI, including reduced serum creatinine, blood urea concentration, tubular cell death and inflammatory responses as well as improved morphological injuries. Consistently, in vitro, DGKE overexpression in human renal proximal tubule (HK-2) cells also protected against oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD)/reoxygenation-induced cell death. Mechanistically, DGKE regulated Klotho expression, at least partly via the transcription factor Kruppel-like factor (KLF) 15. Moreover, a significant reduction in DGKE was also found in kidneys from patients with ischemia-associated acute tubular necrosis (ATN). Collectively, our studies demonstrate that DGKE protects against AKI in mice at least partly through KLF15/Klotho signaling pathway, indicating that DGKE may present an innovative therapeutic strategy for treating patients with AKI.

In this work, we prepared three CaWO4 single crystals (CaW-0, CaW-1 and CaW-3) doped with rare earth elements (REEs) at nominal mass fractions of 50, 250 and 5000 mu g g(-1) using the Czochralski method. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were employed to evaluate the within- and between-unit homogeneity of major elements and REEs, respectively. The within-unit variation (sr) of 0.400.84% and between-unit s(r) of 0.14-1.48% for major elements were obtained. Within- and between-unit s(r) of 0.535.56% were also found for REEs by LA-ICP-MS spot analyses. A comparison of the sr of repeat analyses was compared with the analytical uncertainty (u), i.e., the mean square weighted deviation (MSWD), which is close to or slightly higher than 1, indicating that no obvious chemical heterogeneity was found in these crystals. Reference values for these elements were obtained through various analytical methods across four different laboratories and applications of the reference materials to calibrating REE mass fractions in a natural scheelite were performed. No significant difference of the results was found as t values are less than 2.75 at the 99% confidence interval. The excellent linearity (R-2 > 0.98) between the REE mass fractions and both LA-ICP-MS signal intensity and wafer absorbance was found, but the crater height and the absolute mass transported into ICP-MS decreased when REE mass fractions as well as the colour of crystals increased. These results suggest that the reference materials have the potential to calibrate REE mass fractions in natural scheelite.

In this work, a high-sensitivity distributed lateral pressure sensor based on Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) technique is proposed to enhance the pressure sensitivity using a double-coated single-mode fiber (SMF). Firstly, a pressure-induced strain model is developed to analyze the enhancement mechanism of pressure sensitivity by Brillouin frequency shift (BFS). With increasing of outer coating radius, or with decreasing of the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of outer coating, the lateral pressure sensitivity increases. By using a double-coated SMF whose outer coating radius is 1500 µm, a high sensitivity of -3.51 MHz/MPa in the range of 0-30 MPa is achieved, which is about five times higher than that of single-coated SMF. At a spatial resolution of 1.5 m, the maximum measurement error of the proposed pressure sensing system is less than 0.09 MPa. © 2023 SPIE.

Perspective Transition of Large Language Models for Solving Subjective Tasks

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized the field of natural language processing, enabling remarkable progress in various tasks. Different from objective tasks such as commonsense reasoning and arithmetic question-answering, the performance of LLMs on subjective tasks is still limited, where the perspective on the specific problem plays crucial roles for better interpreting the context and giving proper response. For example, in certain scenarios, LLMs may perform better when answering from an expert role perspective, potentially eliciting their relevant domain knowledge. In contrast, in some scenarios, LLMs may provide more accurate responses when answering from a third-person standpoint, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of the problem and potentially mitigating inherent biases. In this paper, we propose Reasoning through Perspective Transition (RPT), a method based on in-context learning that enables LLMs to dynamically select among direct, role, and third-person perspectives for the best way to solve corresponding subjective problem. Through extensive experiments on totally 12 subjective tasks by using both closed-source and open-source LLMs including GPT-4, GPT-3.5, Llama-3, and Qwen-2, our method outperforms widely used single fixed perspective based methods such as chain-of-thought prompting and expert prompting, highlights the intricate ways that LLMs can adapt their perspectives to provide nuanced and contextually appropriate responses for different problems. © 2025, CC BY.

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast has a better long-term survival than invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast in spite of its aggressive clinical presentations: a comparison based on large population database and case-control analysis

There are controversies in the comparison of overall survival between invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast (IMPC) and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). The objective of this study was to compare the long-term survival outcome between non-metastatic IMPC and IDC. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was searched to identify women with non-metastatic IMPC and IDC diagnosed between 2001 and 2013. Comparisons of patient and tumor characteristics were performed using Pearson's chi-square. The propensity score matching method was applied with each IMPC matched to one IDC. Breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier product limit method and compared across groups using the log-rank statistic. Multivariate analysis was performed through Cox models. IMPC was presented with aggressive clinical presentations such as larger tumor, more positive lymph nodes, and more advanced stage compared with IDC. A higher rate of estrogen receptor (ER)/progesterone receptor (PR) positivity was also observed in IMPC. With a median follow-up of 64months, IMPC had a better BCSS (P=0.031) and OS (P=0.012) compared with IDC. In a case-control analysis IMPC was still an independent favorable prognostic factor for BCSS (HR=0.410, P<0.001, 95% CI: 0.293-0.572) and OS (HR=0.497, P<0.001, 95% CI: 0.387-0.637). In subgroup analysis, IMPC always showed a better survival outcome compared with IDC except in AJCC stage I and histologic grade I disease. IMPC has a better long-term survival outcome compared with IDC in spite of its highly aggressive clinical presentation.

The impact of perioperative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the postoperative outcomes of spinal surgery: a meta-analysis of 23 randomized controlled trials

In recent years, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs), which are considered to affect the prognosis of spinal surgery, have been widely used in perioperative analgesia in spinal surgery, but the relationship between these two factors remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of perioperative use of NSAIDs on the prognosis of patients treated with spinal surgery. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for relevant articles published on or before July 14, 2023. We used a random-effect model for the meta-analysis to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Sensitivity analyses were conducted to analyze stability. A total of 23 randomized clinical trials including 1457 participants met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that NSAIDs were significantly associated with postoperative morphine use (mg) (SMD = -0.90, 95% CI -1.12 to -0.68) and postoperative pain (SMD = -0.71, 95% CI -0.85 to -0.58). These results were further confirmed by the trim-and-fill procedure and leave-one-out sensitivity analyses. The current study shows that perioperative use of NSAIDs appears to be an important factor in reducing postoperative pain and morphine use in patients undergoing spinal surgery. However, well-designed, high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are still required.
