Foraging patches can be described as a nested hierarchy of aggregated resources, implying that study of foraging by wild animals should be directed across different spatial scales. However, almost all previous research on habitat selection by the giant panda has concentrated upon one scale. In this research, we carried out a field study to understand foraging patch selection by giant pandas in winter at both microhabitat and feeding site scales and, for the first time, attempted to understand how long it would stay at the feeding sites before moving on. The field survey was conducted from November 2002 to March 2003 at Fengtongzhai Nature Reserve (102A degrees 48'aEuro"103A degrees 00' E, 30A degrees 19'aEuro"30A degrees 47' N), Baoxing County of Sichuan Province, China, to collect data in both microhabitat and control plots. The microhabitat plots were located by fresh feces or foraging traces left by giant pandas, and the control plots were established to reflect the environment. Within each microhabitat plot, one 1 x 1 m(2) plot was centralized at the center of each feeding site, in which numbers of old bamboos and old shoots, including eaten and uneaten, were counted, respectively. The results showed that winter microhabitats selected by this species were characteristic of gentle slopes and high old-shoot proportions and that the latter was even higher at feeding sites. Two selection processes, namely, from the environment to microhabitats and from the latter to feeding sites, were found during this species' foraging patch utilization. Giant pandas preferred to eat old shoots to old bamboo at feeding sites in winter and did not leave unless old-shoot density fell to lower than the average in the environment. Both microhabitats and feeding sites selected by giant pandas were characteristic of high old-shoot density, indicating that the preferred food item had a significant influence upon its foraging patch selection. The preference for gentle slopes by giant pand

The red panda Ailurus fulgens Cuvier, 1825 is endemic to the Himalayan-Hengduan Mountains. Many of its ecological traits are still poorly understood although important from a scientific standpoint as a highly specialized bamboo feeder. To understand its food habits and space-use, we carried out a field study from April 2002 to May 2003 in Fengtongzhai Nature Reserve, China. The results showed that red pandas almost exclusively fed on Bashania faberi, but not on Yushania brevipaniculata in the study area. Besides differences in nutritional quality, accessibility to food items is perhaps another factor affecting their utilization of bamboo species. B. faberi leaves are the highest in crude protein, being the primary year-round food source;new shoots and fruits of Sorbus, and Rubus are nutritious and digestible, seasonally occurred in their diet. Red pandas seemed to select most nutritious food items to feed on. The home range of red pandas averaged 2.2 km(2) across individuals (2.6 km(2) for the males and 1.7 km(2) for the females), and overlapped extensively (ranging 18.9-78.1%). No significant difference was found in monthly percentage of total home range used among seasons and sexes. The daily movement distance was 455 m (447 m for the females and 463 m for the males), significantly affected by sexes and months. Our findings indicated that food resource significantly influenced behaviour of red pandas in foraging and space use, and their behavioural responses are adaptive being helpful to energy intake and maintenance.

Based on a regular, causal descriptor controlled plant, the fault detection for a class of descriptor systems with both multiple measurement and control packet dropouts is investigated. Two independent Bernoulli distributed white sequences are used to describe the multiple measurement and control packet dropouts. The problem of fault detection for networked systems can be formulated as an H infinity filtering problem in terms of H infinity theory. Then a fault detection filter which has a given H infinity performance is designed. A sufficient condition for the existence of the filter is established by means of linear matrix inequalities. At last a numerical example shows the validity of the proposed method.

The samples of ductile-rheologic deformational augen granite from the Yunkai uplift area, western Guangdong province, were determined by the whole-rock Sm-Nd, Pb-Pb and Rb-Sr isotopic dating to have an Sm-Nd isochron age of 1414±68 Ma, a Pb-Pb isochron age of 1388±90 Ma and a Rb-Sr isochron age of 490±36 Ma. The first two ages are interpreted as the formation age of this suite of granite and the last age represents the timing of the tectono-thermal event of Caledonian ductile-rheologic shear partial melting. It is indicated that in the study area not only an orogeny took place in the Caledonian, but also a more important tectono-magmatic activity occurred in the Meso-proterozoic there, which may be related to the subduction-collision between the Yangtze block and Cathaysia block.

Being widely distributed in the Qinling Mountains,Bashania fargesii is the primary food source for giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) during winter and *** understand the relationship between panda food habits and nutrients in the bamboo,we collected samples of leaves, branches and stems across seasons and ages in Foping Nature Reserve,Shaanxi Province,China. Each category of samples was collected at the same site, with three replicates, and weighing 200 to 500 gram. Seven trace elements (Zn,Cu,Fe,Mn,Ca,Mg,K) were analyzed by the atomic absorption spectrophometric method. Crude protein was determined following Macro-Kjelhahl procudure, and crude fat was measured with Soxhlet procedure. The results indicated that contents of Mn,Ca,Mg in the leaves and Cu,Zn,Fe in the branches were respectively higher than those in the other parts on bamboo. Compared with those in the branches and stems, contents of crude protein and crude fat in the leaves were significantly higher. In addition, contents of trace elements and nutrients in the bamboos varied across seasons and ages. Leaves are the most nutritious among different parts of bamboo. Food habits exhibited by giant pandas were closely related to nutrition quality of leaves in the bamboo.

Although the Chinese government and international organizations have spent millions of dollars estimating the population size of giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), the outcomes of such surveys have been debated because the methods used had uncertain ability to differentiate individuals. Our work in Wanglang Reserve was the first attempt at using fecal microsatellite analysis to enumerate giant pandas (Zhan et al. 2006), and we found the molecular enumeration for the reserve more than doubled that estimated in the third National Survey. Recently, Garshelis et al. (2008) challenged our DNA estimate on the grounds that our study lacked geographic closure and that genotyping errors confounded our results. We challenge both assertions. First, we realize the violation of the assumption of geographic closure is a common problem for noninvasive genetic capture-recapture studies;therefore, we tried in our methodology to minimize geographic closure effects. We conclude that immigration did not greatly affect our main conclusions because of a geographic barrier circling the study area, the limited mobility of giant pandas, and the same sampling intensity was applied to the whole study area. Second, internationally accepted standards were applied to our molecular analysis and appropriate laboratory procedures were taken to produce reliable genotypes. Although we did not report an estimate of genotyping error in our previous work (Zhan et al. 2006), genotyping error rates have now been estimated, but are still pending publication. Based on the Wanglang result, we raised the possibility that there might be more giant pandas in the wild than previously thought. If our prediction is shown to be correct, we do not believe the new estimate will serve to downgrade current endangered status of the giant panda, because population numbers remain very low and panda habitats are fragmented (even more so since the 2008 earthquake). For future conservation of giant pandas, we suggest mor
