Modern spectroscopic techniques combined with chemometrics for process quality control of traditional Chinese medicine: A review

The process quality control of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is crucial for ensuring product quality and facilitating the internationalization. However, the quality control faces major challenges due to the complexity of chemical composition and influence of factors in the production process. With the aid of artificial intelligence and chemometrics, modern spectroscopic analysis techniques effectively extract chemical information from TCM and provide an intelligent guarantee for TCM analysis. This article reviews the research progress of modern spectroscopic techniques combined with chemometrics methods in the process quality control of TCM over the past 20 years. The principles, advantages and disadvantages of the main spectroscopic techniques applied in TCM are firstly summarized. Then chemometric methods used in the analysis of TCM are introduced, including sample set grouping, preprocessing, variable selection, chemical pattern recognition and multivariate calibration methods. Finally, the applications of spectroscopic techniques with chemometrics in the process analysis of TCM are reviewed. These applications include geographical origin identification, adulteration determination, species identification and wild versus cultivated identification of herbal raw materials. They also cover component determination and monitoring, chemical analysis and biomarker assessment of herbal intermediates. Additionally, dissolution behavior analysis of preparations and identification of expired and unexpired samples of patent herbal products are discussed. Intelligent and digital analysis of the entire process will promote the modernization of TCM industry.

Sedentary behavior and risk of chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundSedentary behavior has been considered a particular risk factor for adverse health outcomes independent of exercise, becoming a widespread public health issue globally. Many studies have analyzed the effect of sedentary behavior levels on the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), however, previous findings have been inconsistent. This study aims to evaluate the association between sedentary behavior and the risk of *** databases were searched for relevant cohort studies that were published between September 2024 and the databases' inception. To assess the association between sedentary behavior and risk of CKD, we calculated pooled effect sizes as relative risk (RR) with 95% CI using a random effects model. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias analysis were *** cohort studies involving 996,489 participants were identified. There was significant heterogeneity in the study (I2 = 58.0%, P = 0.02). Pooled results of the random effects model showed a positive correlation between sedentary behavior and the risk of CKD (RR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.08, 1.21). In addition, subgroup analysis revealed that the study area was a source of heterogeneity. Leisure-time sedentary behavior (RR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.16, 1.37) and combined sedentary behavior (RR = 1.16, 95% CI 1.08, 1.25) were positively related to risk of CKD. The result for occupational sedentary behavior (RR = 1.08, 95% CI 1.00, 1.16) suggested a borderline statistical *** sedentary behavior, particularly during leisure time, is associated with an increased risk of CKD in adults, though residual confounding should be considered.

Integrated proteomics and metabolomics to clarify the essential beneficial mechanisms of L-theanine in alleviating ISO-induced cardiac damage in mice

L-theanine (L-Thea), a bioactive amino acid found in tea, demonstrates remarkable nutraceutical properties. Isoproterenol (ISO) has been utilized as a reliable and potent agent to induce heart failure (HF) in murine models. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanisms through which L-Thea alleviates ISO-induced cardiac damage via the examination of proteomic and metabolomic data. Herein, we first successfully developed an ISOinduced cardiac injury model in mice. Then, the intervention with L-Thea demonstrated an improvement in cardiac performance and enhanced ventricular function. The results of histological assessments suggested that LThea has the potential to mitigate inflammatory infiltration, cardiomyocytes loss, and myocardial fibrosis in heart tissue affected by ISO-induced cardiac injuries in mice. Moreover, the proteomic data indicated that L-Thea led to a significant reduction in apoptosis, the p53 signaling pathway, and the IL-17 signaling pathway within cardiac tissue. Significantly, there were five KEGG pathways that were shown in both the proteome and metabolome, including apoptosis, purine metabolism, cAMP signaling pathway, ABC transporters and cytochrome P450. The western blot results further confirmed that L-Thea induced the downregulation of BAX (proapoptotic protein) and the upregulation of BCL-2 (anti-apoptotic protein), thereby suppressing apoptosis in the cardiac tissue of mice. Collectively, L-Thea possesses the capacity to function as a dietary supplement for the prevention or management of cardiac damage induced by ISO.

Adsorption-desorption characteristics of atrazine on soil and vermicompost prepared with different ratios of raw materials

In this work, vermicompost was prepared with maize stover and cattle dung in ratios of 60:40 (VC1), 50:50 (VC2) and 40:60 (VC3), and the physicochemical properties of the vermicompost were related to the ratio of the raw materials used. The effect of the vermicomposts on the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and desorption of atrazine were investigated in unamended soil (S) and soil amended with 4% (w/w) of VC1(S-VC1), VC2(S-VC2) and VC3(S-VC3). The total organic carbon (TOC) content of VC1, VC2 and VC3 was 38.46, 37.33 and 34.47%, the HA content was 43.50, 42.22 and 39.28 g/kg, and the HA/FA ratios was 1.47, 0.44 and 0.83, respectively. The adsorption of atrazine on the soil, on the vermicompost and on soils amended with vermicompost followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Freundlich equation better fitted the adsorption isotherm of atrazine. The vermicomposts enhanced atrazine adsorption and decreased atrazine desorption. Correlation analysis showed that the TOC and HA were significantly positively correlated with K-f, which indicated that TOC and HA of the vermicomposts contributed significantly to the adsorption and desorption of atrazine. This study demonstrated that vermicomposts have great potential in the bioremediation of atrazine pollution and that their role is related to the raw materials used to prepare them.

Exploring the thermal stability of high-entropy electrode in solid oxide cells

High-entropy (HE) oxides have attracted a lot of research, because it has the advantages of adjustable structure and excellent catalytic performance. However, the lack of a better understanding for the thermal stability impedes its wider application in solid oxide cells (SOCs). Here, a B site HE layered perovskite, PrBa 0.5 Sr 0.5 (Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 ) 2 O 5+delta (HE-PBSC), with low Co content, exceptional resistance to thermal shock is surprisingly obtained. Additionally, the surface cation segregations on the HE-PBSC and its relationship with annealing stability are reported. The polarized impedance ( Rp ) of symmetrical cell with HE-PBSC electrode increases 14.77%, from 3.771 Omega cm 2 to 4.328 Omega cm 2 , after 200 h of annealing. With respect to improving the stability, efforts need to be made in the future to mitigate cation segregations on surface.

Aspect-level sentiment classification aims to determine the sentiment polarity of a given target aspect in a sentence. To solve the problem of ignored the impact of noise in sentences and sentiment relations between different aspects on the sentiment classification performance of models in the current studies, this paper proposes an aspect-oriented syntactic dependency graph and an inter-aspect dependency tree. Based on it, an Interactive Graph Attention Network model is proposed to extract sentiment features of the target aspect by exploiting aspect-oriented and inter-aspect information. Experimental results on SemEval-2014 and Twiter datasets show that the sentiment classification ability of the model is superior to the baseline models, and the accuracy of sentiment classification on restaurant review dataset (Rest14) reach 83.36%. © 2023 SPIE.

The deuterium-labeled dabigatran etexilate and a series of N-(4-cyanophenyl)-1-(methyl-d3)-5-carbamoyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-carbimidoyl chloride derivatives were prepared from commercially available 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoate methyl ester as starting material and deuterium methylamine hydrochloride as the deuterium reagent. The structural properties of the intermediate derivatives were examined, and subsequently assessed for thrombin inhibition. The anticoagulant activity of the deuterium-labeled dabigatran etexilate was higher than that of unlabeled active ingredient, and most of these derivatives have certain valuable properties, which are expected to enrich the landscape of anticoagulant drug research.

Rapamycin mitigates neurotoxicity of fluoride and aluminum by activating autophagy through the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 pathway in hippocampal neurons and NG108-15 cells

Our previous studies have confirmed that fluoride combined with aluminum (FA) can induce hippocampal neuron damage in the second-generation offspring (F2) of rats;however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established an F2 rat model and an NG108-15 cell model to investigate the potential modes of action. The autophagy of F2 rat hippocampal neurons and NG108-15 cells was assessed using transmission electron microscopy and immunofluorescence/immunocytochemistry kit, respectively. Hippocampal morphology was evaluated via hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. We measured mRNA levels of AMPK, mTOR, ULK1, and LC3 using quantitative reverse transcription PCR, and protein expressions were analyzed by Western blotting. Following treatment with rapamycin (Rap) in FA-exposed F2 rats and NG108-15 cells, a small number of primary lysosomes and autophagosomes appeared within hippocampal cells, with HE staining indicating a near-normal restoration of pyramidal cell morphology. The quantity, intensity, and volume of green fluorescent spots in the cytoplasm of NG108-15 cells increased as observed through fluorescence microscopy. The mRNA expressions of AMPK, ULK1, and LC3 were upregulated while mTOR expressions were downregulated in NG108-15 cells. Correspondingly, protein levels for AMPK, p-AMPK, ULK1, p-ULK1 along with the LC3-II/LC3-I ratio increased whereas those for mTOR, p-mTOR and p62 decreased significantly. Similar trends regarding both mRNA and protein expression were noted within the hippocampus of F2 rats as well. Activation of the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 signaling pathway by Rap enhances FA-induced autophagy thereby mitigating neuronal damage.
