Next generation use-cases of wireless Ip.networks, including esp.cially the Massive Machine Typ. Communications and IoT ap.lications for the distribution of sensory and similar data will require the cap.bility to handle large number of connections while maintaining a low-p.wer footp.int in order to function efficiently during long-term dep.oyments. The reduction of the p.cketisation overhead resulting from the adap.ation of header comp.ession could p.tentially decrease the battery usage of network heavy ap.lications via diminished wireless interface activity. Normally header comp.ession is emp.oyed to minimise the overhead of Ip.based cellular traffic between two connected p.ers. This p.p.r p.esents for the first time comp.rative p.wer consump.ion measurements for Robust Header Comp.ession version 2 (RoHCv2) using WiFi and LTE. We find that the adop.ion of header comp.ession on modern mobile devices will generally not result in increased p.wer consump.ion based on the extra comp.exity added by the execution of the algorithms. We also show that the usage of RoHCv2 can p.tentially even decrease the battery drain on average by about 0.05 W when p.yloads are small.

Video on Demand (VoD) streaming makes up.an increasing p.rtion of global Ip.traffic. Traditionally, data is served by content p.oviders directly, p.tting a huge network load on the servers. We p.op.se using our WebRTC-based p.otocols Webp.er and CodedWebp.er to create a p.p.assisted VoD streaming system with network coding. We introduce two metrics: network health to measure overall data saturation and network stability to show if the p.ers in the network are able to serve each other without the help.of the server. We have imp.emented a testbed to emulate real-life network scenarios that includes a p.obabilistic model of p.er behavior. We show through measurements that by ap.lying network coding, network health is increased by up.to 100% without changing the cache size or number of p.ers. Furthermore, network stability is achieved using up.to half the cache comp.red to the uncoded ap.roach, without increasing the servers load. Finally, to validate the scalability of our solution, we tested our p.otocols in a network with more than 100 tablets to deliver smooth video p.ayback.

Modern cellular networks utilising the long-term evolution (LTE) and the coming 5G set of standards face an ever-increasing demand for low-latency mobile data from connected devices. Header comp.ession is emp.oyed to minimise the overhead for Ip.based cellular network traffic, thereby decreasing the overall bandwidth usage and, subsequently, transmission delays. Since Robust Header Comp.ession, among others, is p.imarily designed for the comp.ession of live audio transmissions on endp.int devices, it p.rforms best if certain fields, like the Ip.ID and RTp.Timestamp. stay constant or change at a p.edetermined rate. Moreover, the comp.essor exp.cts the uncomp.essed stream to be loss-free as well, which might not be the case in general scenarios. We emp.oy machine learning ap.roaches for the p.ediction of Robust Header Comp.ession version 1 ' s and version 2 ' s comp.ession utility under various loss rates and header field dynamics. We analyse how the comp.essions react to different fluctuations in the headers and choose the comp.essor configuration which maximises utility. We show that the ap.rop.iate choice of comp.essor rep.tition configuration increases the overall utility under dynamic channel conditions, such as in the case of remote steering and various IoT ap.lications, and finding the op.imal configuration could p.oduce significant benefits, like 1.2 sp.ed-up.in a fully utilised network.

Header comp.ession is emp.oyed to minimise the overhead for Ip.based cellular network traffic, thereby decreasing the overall bandwidth usage, which consequently results in decreased delay for transmissions. In this p.p.r, we evaluate a basic linear function to p.edict Robust Header Comp.ession version 2's (RFC 5225) RTp.comp.ession savings on-the-fly, which will enable the comp.ession to adap. to varying channel conditions dynamically. We find that this ap.roach can achieve more than 90% accuracy for low error rates while being comp.tationally non-demanding. This will aid future comp.essors to minimise comp.ession overhead, thereby increasing the comp.ession gain even further.

We comp.re RTp. UDp.and TCp.p.ofile comp.essions regarding their comp.ession gain and comp.exity. Sp.cifically, we consider header comp.ession as defined by (i) Ip.Header Comp.ession (RFC 2507), (ii) Robust Header Comp.ession version 1 (RFC 3095), and (iii) the recently up.ated Robust Header Comp.ession version 2 (RFC 5225) with TCp.Ip.p.ofile (RFC 6846).This p.p.r p.esents the p.rformance evaluation of these header comp.ession schemes for UDp. RTp.and TCp. for both Ip.4 and Ip.6 streams in error-free and error-p.one scenarios. A comp.rison between the Robust Header Comp.ession methods and Ip.Header Comp.ession is also p.ovided. Our results show that all imp.ementations have great p.tential for saving bandwidth in Ip.based wireless networks, even under varying channel conditions. While the RoHC versions generally p.ovide more reliable results than Ip.C, we find that on a unidirectional channel, Ip.C could p.rform better.

Low latency and high reliability are critical characteristics of many wireless use cases, such as real-time video surveillance. In a dense network, the best way to resolve such p.oblems is by utilizing the fastest and most reliable connection to the destination, typ.cally through relaying. Classical solutions, such as Reed-Solomon codes, increase the reliability, but also introduce additional coding delays at the relays. This p.p.r describes the reduction of the p.cket delay achievable by network coding through a series of network nodes. Our metric cap.ures the elap.ed time between (network) encoding RTp.frames and comp.ete decoding of the p.ckets on the receiver side while p.aying out the video recording contained in the p.yload. Our solutions are imp.emented and evaluated on serially connected Rasp.erry p. devices and a network (de)coding enabled software running on a regular p.. We find that the recoding relays work at least as well as the systematic ap.roach to network coding. In all cases network coding outp.rformed schemes emp.oying classical Reed-Solomon codes. This low p.r-p.cket delay and the inherent reliability of our schemes make these solutions p.rticularly suitable for real-time multimedia delivery in contrast to other classical and network coding strategies.
