Algorithmic Splitting: A Method for Dataset Preparation

The datasets that appear in publications are curated and have been split into training, testing and validation sub-datasets by domain experts. Consequently, machine learning models typically perform well on such split-by-hand prepared datasets. Whereas preparing real-world datasets into curated split training, testing and validation sub-dataset requires extensive effort. Usually, repetitive random splits are carried out and trained and evaluated on until reaching out a good score on the evaluation metrics. In this paper, an algorithmic method is proposed for preparing the sub-datasets splits for machine learning models. The objective of the proposed method is to achieve an evenly representative splits out of the dataset with standard and algorithmic way that reduce the perplexity of random splitting.

Energy Aware IoT Routing Algorithms in Smart City Environment

Energy efficiency is one of the key aspects of IoT and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) since the nodes of the network are running on battery power and the lifespan of the system is an important mission-critical parameter. In WSNs, where the energy consumption mainly depends on the radio interface and the transmission protocols, reliable packet forwarding from the source node to Base Station (BS) is crucial. In this paper, we focus on developing new routing algorithms which extend the lifespan of WSNs by achieving optimal energy balancing subject to the criterion that the packets must reach the BS with a predefined probability. We will propose novel two-hop and multi-hop routing algorithms to achieve this objective. The performance of the novel algorithms is compared with the LEACH routing protocol. Extensive simulations prove that the new routing methods are indeed energy efficient, and they are able to meet the predefined reliability criteria as well. The results given in this paper can contribute to reliable communication in IoT or WSN networks and result in lower energy consumption.

Orientation estimation in modern wearables with visual feature tracking

In this paper we propose and examine a robust method for orientation estimation of wearables (like Google Glass) through bias compensation of gyroscope. Through integration of raw angular rates, the resulting orientation estimate will drift, due to the non-zero bias of the measured gyroscope was also accumulated. A simple error model was constructed for the measurement capabilities of the device, in terms of inertial sensing of rotation. Using the benefits of feature point displacements (as optical flow) from the camera of the device, a sensor fusion algorithm was developed to lower, and compensate the bias. The introduced orientation estimator and bias removal method is based on adaptive reliability filter for the optical flow feature points. To fuse the remaining feature point displacements into one single value, various aggregation methods have been tested, and a maximum a-posteriori estimator was applied on the dataset. To further lower the bias from the gyroscope, the output of the system was used as a feedback to calculate a bias estimate. To measure the performance and investigate the benefits of the asynchronous work-flow, the optical flow was performed on various devices in real time. To validate the results of the simulations, real world measurements were performed with industrial robots. Our reliable, adaptive filter matched our expectations, could compensate the bias well, and the integrated output of the system had no significant drift.

The Usage and Behavior Patterns of Mobile BitTorrent Clients

With the many changes in mobile phone use, it is now common for users to connect to the Internet and share social and multimedia data, and peer-to-peer technology remains one of the most efficient solutions to content sharing. We analysed the lifecycle of content shared using the BitTorrent network, focusing on torrents retrieved by mobile phone clients using our MobTorrent application. MobTorrent, a complete BitTorrent client for feature phones, enables anonymous usage statistics to be collected. Based on statistics collected over the last three years, we analyze how mobile BitTorrent clients are being used. We discuss the success of individual sessions by additionally measuring peer connection download and success ratio statistics. This research can be considered as a pioneer work in the field of mobile content sharing solutions.

Web analytics are used to retrieve anonymous information about users. We focus here on websites that support mobile clients. This information is important from the perspective of business analysis as web analytics help in making appropriate design decisions. Popular web sites may handle several million page views a day, so poor system design - even that related only to collecting statistics on user behavior - may produce performance bottlenecks or even system failures. This paper presents measurements based on a user-data database for a large mobile supported website and a model used when designing such sites.

Practical Evaluation of Multi-Source Coded Downloads

In this paper, we introduce two multi-source download protocols for loosely orchestrated networks that have high potential in Information-Centric Networking (ICN). We focus on services with high bandwidth and low delay requirements, such as video streaming. We propose MUlti-source Transmission Protocol (MUTP) for uncoded multi-source data delivery and extend it with network coding capabilities to create Coded MUTP. We investigate their throughput using a custom-designed system that includes browser extensions and proxy servers. The browser extensions intercept YouTube video downloads and forward them through our proxy server, using parallel HTTP requests, Uncoded MUTP or Coded MUTP approach. We present measurement results collected in 2018-2019, over eleven months that include 1,300,000 log records from more than 960 GBs of video download. We show that even when downloading from only two sources, our protocols can match the heavily optimized HTTP. Furthermore, by increasing the number of sources to four or higher, MUTP protocols can outperform HTTP, reaching an up to three-fold goodput (useful throughput) increase. In addition, we show that the proposed solution avoids the straggler problem, therefore adding more sources to a network increases its goodput.

Gamification and driving decision support using the sensors of vehicles and smartphones

Vehicles are not just a means of transportation anymore, but they are also moving entities that collect and transmit a great amount of data, captured by sensors from the internals of the vehicle and from its environment as well. These data extended with smartphone sensors can be a stable base for smart car-based infocommunication systems. There are two main interfaces to extract the data from a vehicle: OBD-II (On-board Diagnostics) and CAN bus (Controller Area Network bus). This paper introduces an advanced measurement tool, called ObdCanCompare. The purpose of this tool is to provide an environment to compare these data streams in real time and conclude how and which interface can be used for derivation of driving decisions. It also enables creating business intelligence reports using the SensorHUB-based backend, which is our data collection and service development for sensor networks, smart devices and cloud-based backend environments. Results show that the OBD-II interface is quite accurate compared to CAN bus, in order to demonstrate this we have created the Social Driving application as a socio-cognitive ICT pilot application that displays vehicle data to users from OBD-II and enables to compare usage statistics of different drivers in the network as a socio-cognitive gamification.

In this work we define the term of phonebook centric-social networks, describe a graph model and study structural properties of this. The key difference between phonebook-centric social networks and usual social networks is allowing synchronization between the phonebook of the mobile phone and the network. By the synchronization the goal is to identify the persons listed in the phonebook and the network, it means to find similar entries and keep the data consistent. In that way the contacts of a member of a phonebook-centric social network becomes independent from the current phone. The number of similarities is crucial in phonebook-centric social networks from, scalability point of view. We found that the distribution of similarities can be very well approximated by power law distribution. This means that few users involve a huge amount of similarities while the most of them only few ones.

Standard gyroscopes found in mobile phones tend to have bias in output angular rate. Nowadays these mobiles are also equipped with high resolution cameras and multimedia-ready processors capable to calculate optical flow from shot images. In order to lower the gyroscope bias, thus leading to a less drifting integrated angle, camera based optical flow values can aid regular gyroscope values to produce a robust output. In this paper an adaptive algorithm is presented to fuse optical flow angular rates with gyroscope output, in a way to eliminate deceiving tracked features on camera images, caused by moving object in the field of view of the camera. Measurements were recorded with a robotic arm using an Android phone. Further simulations were also tested in MATLAB to investigate the limits of this algorithm.

The page views of domestic advertising sites are one of the largest after social networking and online newspaper sites. Basically, we can make a distinction between two main types of measurement. One of them is the so-called, newspaper type" website where articles stay in the database in perpetuity. The system never deletes the users-data. The other type is called, advertising type" website where the system deletes expired ad and all related user-data. In this paper the "advertising type" of websites is considered. Web analytics is a process through which statistics about website usage and user behaviors are gathered. Such an analytics program can be used as a tool to get information about users, who they are, where they are coming from, how often they are visiting a website and how much time do they spend on a website. In this paper we show how to calculate the number of user-data records generated in the database per day and total from system startup in general. In addition, we use a detailed user-data database of a small classifieds website to illustrate the utility of models.
