The RPC model is a generalized sensor model that is capable of achieving high approximation accuracy. After the RPC was verified as a replacement sensor model for push-broom image and aerial image, several researchers assessed the accuracy of 3D positioning using the RPC. But almost all researchers studies proved that the RPC could satisfy several important requirements of the replacement sensor model to provide general tools for mapping, accurate 3D positioning, and real-time processing. Image matching for satellite imagery is not easy, especially when the geometric differences between the stereoscopic satellite images are quite large. The epipolar solution, which is popular for aerial photography, has some difficulties when applied to satellite imagery due to different geometric characteristics. This paper offers an advanced matching solution to resolve the inherent problems for the high-resolution satellites when the RPC is adopted as a basic sensor model. The proposed matching algorithm reduces the search space using object-space constraints and provides an initial position for image matching. In order to verify the applicability for high-resolution satellite imagery and check the performance of the proposed matching scheme, IKONOS stereo pairs with RPC are tested.

Block adjustment process, based on a multisensor block adjustment, is applied to VIR and SAR images: SPOT-5 HRG and RADARSAT SGF. The affine transformation in the image plane and the RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficients or Rapid Positioning Capability) model and algorithms were used for the processing. Preliminary results of block formed with all images gave positional errors of around 20-26 m, these errors also include the 1:50,000 map errors (25-30 m).

The rational polynomial camera (RPC) model is a generalized sensor model that is capable of achieving high approximation accuracy. Unfortunately, in almost all previous literature, the estimator of the parameters of the RPC model is biased, and the RPC model is not for SAR Imagery. In this paper, an unbiased RPC estimator is presented. Based on numerous tests, the following conclusion can be drawn. The RPC model is suited not only for push-broom imagery but also for SAR imagery.
