Multiscale structures of crust-mantle beneath the South China block and their geodynamic implication

The South China block is an ideal location in which to study the impact of paleo-Pacific plate subduction on the upper mantle and crustal structures of the overriding plate, as well as the mechanism of lithospheric thinning. By integrating data from permanent seismic stations of the China Seismic Network and a dense seismic array at Xuefeng Mountain, this study employed P- and S-wave receiver functions (RFs) to image multiscale structures of crust-mantle across the South China block, thereby providing constraints for a comprehensive understanding of its tectonic evolution. The main findings are as follows: (1) The thickness of lithosphere and crust gradually decreases from northwest (NW) to southeast (SE). (2) Beneath the Xuefeng Mountain uplift zone, the P-to-S conversion from the 660 km discontinuity arrives earlier than that predicted from a one-dimensional model, other weak discontinuities can be traced in the upper mantle, including the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, the crust becomes thinner, and the Conrad discontinuity becomes deeper. Referring to previous results from tomography and geological reconstructions, we deduce that lithospheric delamination might have occurred beneath the Xuefeng Mountain uplift zone, and the delaminated lithosphere penetrated the upper mantle and reached the mantle transition zone.

A Large-Scale and Low-Cost Thermoacoustic Loudspeaker Based on Three-Dimensional Graphene Foam

Graphene is a promising material for thermoacoustic sources due to its extremely low heat capacity per unit area and high thermal conductivity. However, current graphene thermoacoustic devices have limited device area and relatively high cost, which limit their applications of daily use. here, we adopt a dip-coating method to fabricate a large-scale and cost-effective graphene sound source. This sound source has the three-dimensional (3D) porous structure that can increase the contact area between graphene and air, thus assisting heat to release into the air. In this method, polyurethane (PU) is used as a support, and graphene nanoplates are attached onto the PU skeleton so that a highly flexible graphene foam (GrF) device is obtained. At a measuring distance of 1 mm, it can emit sound at up to 70 dB under the normalized input power of 1 W. Considering its unique porous structure, we establish a thermoacoustic analysis model to simulate the acoustic performance of GrF. Furthermore, the obtained GrF can be made up to 44 in. (100 cm x 50 cm) in size, and it has good flexibility and processability, which broadens the application fields of GrF loudspeakers. It can be attached to the surfaces of objects with different shapes, making it suitable to be used as a large-area speaker in automobiles, houses, and other application scenarios, such as neck mounted speaker. In addition, it can also be widely used as a fully flexible in-ear earphone.

Efficient removal of uranium from aqueous solution in a modified three-dimensional electrokinetic system

A modified electrokinetic system using activated carbon particles was proposed to quickly remove uranium (U). The influences of electrokinetic parameters such as voltage, length of particle electrode, particle electrode ration were studied through batch experiments. The results revealed that the three dimensional electrokinetic (3D-EK) treatment system showed a great potential for uranium removal. The uranium removal efficiency reached above 99% and the residual solution reached the discharge standard when pH = 2, voltage = 25 V,150 g/L of 4 mm particle electrode. The colloidal precipitates generated were detected as Fe(OH)(3). Tthe probable removal mechanism is ascribed to the synergy of electromigration, electrocoagulation and adsorption.

The optimal dosage of aspirin for preventing preeclampsia in high-risk pregnant women: A network meta-analysis of 23 randomized controlled trials

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and optimal dosage of aspirin in preventing preeclampsia in high-risk pregnant women. Traditional and network meta-analyses were conducted on data from 23 randomized controlled trials involving 10 547 pregnant women. The findings demonstrated that aspirin significantly reduced the incidence of preeclampsia (OR = 0.66, 95%CI [0.58, 0.75]), with the best preventive effect observed at a dosage of 80-100 mg/day (OR = 0.51, 95%CI [0.36, 0.72]). No significant differences were found in the occurrence of postpartum hemorrhage (OR = 1.03, 95%CI [0.79, 1.33]), small for gestational age (OR = 0.83, 95%CI [0.50, 1.35]), placental abruption (OR = 0.96, 95%CI [0.53, 1.73]), and intrauterine growth restriction (OR = 0.63, 95%CI [0.45, 1.86]) between women taking aspirin and those taking placebos. Different doses of aspirin showed a reduction in preeclampsia incidence, but there was no significant difference in efficacy between the dosage groups. Side effects did not significantly differ between placebo and different aspirin dosage groups. SUCRA analysis suggested that 80-100 mg/day may be the optimal dosage, prioritizing both effectiveness and minimizing side effects. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the findings. However, improvements are needed in addressing issues like loss to follow-up, reporting bias, and publication bias. In conclusion, a dosage of 80-100 mg/day is recommended for preventing preeclampsia in high-risk pregnant women, although individual circumstances should be considered for optimizing the balance between effectiveness and safety.

Bidirectional rapid sensing based on rare-earth upconversion nanoparticles for the ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide detection

The current detection methods for L-Ascorbic Acid (AA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) often face limitations in sensitivity, rapidity, and practical application. Addressing these challenges, this study introduces a bidirectional rapid sensing platform based on rare-earth upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for the detection of AA and H2O2. The developed probe, combining Tm-doped NaYF4 UCNPs with an iron chelate (SA-FeIII), leverages the inner filtration effect for efficient detection. By employing both fluorescence and colorimetric methods, the proposed system achieves linear detection ranges of 0-100 mu M for AA and 0-71.7 mu M for H2O2, with detection limits as low as 0.1 mu M and 0.45 mu M, respectively. Furthermore, a smartphone-based image analysis technique demonstrates the potential for rapid, on-site concentration measurements. This work significantly enhances the practicality of AA and H2O2 detection, offering a sensitive, fast, and user-friendly approach that holds promise for applications in clinical diagnostics, food safety, and agricultural stress monitoring.

Charts, as a vital part of visualization language, are omnipresent in real-world. Understanding charts is crucial for unveiling implicit data insights. The evolution of large-scale models has marked significant milestones in chart comprehension. However, comprehending multiple charts jointly remains challenging due to the complexities of multi-chart reasoning and the intricate dataset construction involving multiple charts. In this study, we introduce DGE, a sophisticated logic-based multi-chart question-answering dataset generation engine that, with only simple data input, generates diverse joint charts and questions with complex logic. It employs logical templates to guide question generation, ensuring excellent scalability. Leveraging the DGE engine, we propose MCQA, the inaugural large-scale dataset for joint reasoning question-answering involving multiple charts, which includes 22,860 chart pairs and 100,331 complex questions, each annotated with an inference process. Finally, we evaluate several baselines on the MCQA dataset, establishing a research foundation for the chart question answering community. High Responsivity Analysis of 4H-SiC Phototransistor

The performance of a 4H-SiC n-p-n phototransistor with a 30-mu m thick collector under different bias voltages, light intensities, and temperatures is meticulously studied in this letter. The responsivity of the device to 360-nm incident light is improved to 2.02 x 10(4) A/W with 37 V bias voltage. Bias voltage and incident light intensity have a synergistic effect on the device's responsivity. As the bias voltage increases, the responsivity of the device increases drastically at low incident light intensities. In contrast, the increasing trend slows down at high intensities due to the increased concentration of carriers in the base region, causing the neutral region to widen. The device is capable of responding linearly to 360 nm light with an intensity range exceeding 5 orders of magnitude at 5 V. High-temperature detection characterization indicates that the device biased at 21 V has a responsivity of 2.5 x 10(4) A/W at 453 K, which provides experimental evidence for the 4H-SiC phototransistor's high-temperature detection ability.

In the Visual Question Answering (VQA) task context, most methods are influenced by language bias, resulting in poor performance on out-of-distribution data. Recently, some works attempted to use the adaptive margin loss to address this bias issue. However, these works typically consider only the frequency of answer labels when designing margin loss, leading to some samples being overly emphasized or lacking sufficient attention during model training. To address this issue, we propose a novel margin loss guided by the Gini-impurity for VQA debiasing. By comprehensively considering label distribution and instance complexity, we use Gini impurity to adjust the margin values in margin loss, balancing the attention of the model to different samples. Importantly, our method is plug-and-play and can be directly applied to any baseline. In the VQA-CP v2 task, our evaluation results across various baselines surpass the current state-of-the-art methods.

Temporal and Spatial Effects of Extreme Drought Events on Human Epidemics over Ancient China in 1784-1787 CE

Extreme drought events can impact human health, notably triggering epidemics that impose significant global health and economic burdens. Understanding these effects and developing response strategies is crucial. However, there is limited epidemiological evidence on how climate change influenced ancient epidemics before large-scale urbanization and frequent population movements. In this study, we utilized the Reconstructed East Asian Climate Historical Encoded Series (REACheS) climate database and the self-constructed ancient Chinese epidemics database to examine extreme drought events in ancient China from 1784-1787 CE. We analyzed factors like grain prices, population density, and socioeconomic conditions to explore the temporal and spatial mechanism and influence the degree of extreme drought events on epidemics outbreaks. The results show that there is a clear positive link between drought and the spread of epidemics, with a notable one-year lag effect of drought. Drought impacts epidemics directly and indirectly through locust plague, famine, crop failure, and social turmoil, with famine being the most crucial factor. Official disaster management can mitigate epidemics. This study intuitively shows the relationship between extreme drought events and epidemics in ancient China and offering insights into the climate change-epidemic relationship. Placing the conclusions of this paper in a broader context has global implications, providing historical experience for polycrisis and modern challenges.

Detection limit improvement for a gas concentration measurement system using space-domain active fiber cavity ring-down sensing technology

Trace gas sensors have received extensive attention and have become particularly attractive for applications in toxic gas detection, medical diagnostics, pollution monitoring, industrial emission measurement, and so on. However, it is still a critical challenge for gas sensors to simultaneously achieve high sensitivity and low detection limits while performing well in stability. here, a space-domain active fiber cavity ring-down (FCRD) gas sensing technique was proposed to develop a high-performance gas sensor. Taking advantage of the active FCRD sensing technique and frequency-shifted interferometry, the proposed gas sensor exhibited a high sensitivity of 1.122 km-1/%. Importantly, introducing a bidirectional EDFA into the fiber cavity further enhances the light-gas interaction, resulting in a low detection limit of 55 ppm, which is much lower than that of most reported gas sensors. Moreover, a good stability of 0.58% can be achieved due to the combined effect of the proposed technology using differential detection to eliminate DC noise, as well as common-path interference to eliminate common-mode noise and the use of continuous light to stabilize the optical power in the fiber cavity for suppressing the gain fluctuations of EDFA.(c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group
