Purposes To investigate the feasibility and clinical efficacy of the treatment for lumbar tuberculosis with psoas major abscess with single-stage posterior resection of the transversal process combined with an intervertebral foraminal approach for debridement, interbody fusion, internal fixation. Methods This retrospective study evaluated the clinical data of 24 patients (14 males and 10 females) with lumbar tuberculosis and psoas major abscess admitted to the Comprehensive Surgery from June 2016 to June 2019. All patients were treated with the single-stage posterior approach to remove the transverse process combined with the intervertebral foramina approach for debridement, interbody fusion, internal fixation. The quadruple anti-tuberculosis drug therapy was given both pre-operatively and post-operatively. Clinical symptoms and complications were investigated and recorded. The visual analogue scale (VAS), American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA), degree of lesion fusion C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were evaluated. Results The average follow-up period was 16. 5 months (from 12 to 36 months). The average VAS score at three months post-operation was significantly declined than the pre-operative VAS score [(2.17 +/- 0.87) points vs (5.46 +/- 1.22) points, t = - 11.534, P < 0.01)]. At the last follow-up, the neurological function of 20 patients recovered to grade E, whereas four patients were still in grade D. The ESR and CRP returned to normal levels in all patients. Bone fusion was achieved in nine cases at six months, 11 cases at nine months, and four cases at 12 months. The incisions of 23 patients had healed nicely without chronic sinus. Poor incision healing only happened in one case at the day 12 post-operation. The bone grafts among the lesions obtained bony fusion. Risk assessment and spatial analysis of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) concentrations and acute dietary exposure of commercially available shellfish in coastal areas in China

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are produced by marine dinoflagellates and can be accumulated in filter feeding shellfish. In this study, we assessed acute dietary exposure to PSTs among residents of Chinese coastal provinces and cities, utilizing point and probabilistic estimates. Additionally, we performed global and local spatial autocorrelation analyses to evaluate PSTs contamination and dietary exposure levels in the coastal regions of China. The point estimate revealed that hebei province exhibited the highest level of PSTs dietary exposure, measuring 39.57 mu g STX eq./kg bw. In all regions, except for Guangxi, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Shanghai, the ratio between acute dietary exposure and the acute reference dose (ARfD) exceeded 1. Probabilistic estimates indicated that P99.9 exceeded the ARfD value exclusively in Guangdong, Hainan, and Liaoning. In comparison, the point estimate was significantly higher than the P99.9 value of the probabilistic estimate. The spatial analysis results showed "low-high" aggregation of PSTs concentration and point estimate dietary exposure levels in Liaoning and Shandong, while probabilistic estimate dietary exposure level exhibited "low-high" aggregation in Guangxi. This implied the presence of regional variations in PSTs contamination and dietary exposure within the coastal regions of China, along with specific localized clustering features. Therefore, it is advisable to develop regionalized precision monitoring and dietary interventions to ensure the safety of shellfish consumption, particularly in response to the regional distribution characteristics of PSTs contamination and dietary exposure.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor is associated with cardiovascular calcification in peritoneal dialysis patients

BackgroundCardiovascular disease (CVD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Cardiovascular calcification (CVC) is highly prevalent in PD patients and could predict their cardiovascular mortality. Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is closely associated with coronary artery calcification in hemodialysis patients and is an important predictor of CVD. However, the role of suPAR in PD patients is poorly understood. We investigated the relationship between serum suPAR and CVC in PD *** aortic calcification (AAC) was assessed by lateral lumbar radiography, coronary artery calcification (CAC) by multi-slice computed tomography, and cardiac valvular calcification (ValvC) by echocardiography. CVC was defined as confirmed presence of calcification in one site (AAC, CAC, or ValvC). Patients were divided into CVC group and non-CVC group. Demographic characteristics, biochemical variables, comorbidities, PD regimen, serum suPAR, and medication were compared between the two groups. Logistic regression was conducted to determine association between serum suPAR and presence of CVC. The receiver-operator curve (ROC) was plotted to calculate the area under the curve (AUC) for suPAR to identify CVC and *** 226 PD patients, 111 (49.1%) had AAC, 155 (68.6%) had CAC, and 26 (11.5%) had ValvC. There were significant differences in age, BMI, diabetes, white blood cell, phosphorus, hs-CRP, suPAR, time on dialysis, total volume of dialysate, ultrafiltration, volume of urine, and Kt/V between CVC and non-CVC group. Serum suPAR was associated with CVC by multivariate logistic regression analysis in PD patients, especially in elderly patients. The levels of serum suPAR were closely related to the degree of AAC, CAC, and ValvC in PD patients. The incidence of CVC was higher in patients with higher levels of suPAR. Malolactic fermentation (MLF) is a crucial process to enhance wine quality, and the utilization of indigenous microorganisms has the potential to enhance wine characteristics distinct to a region. here, the MLF performance of five indigenous Oenococcus oeni strains and six synthetic microbial communities (SynComs), were comparatively evaluated in Cabernet Sauvignon wine. In terms of malate metabolism rate and wine aroma diversity, the strain of O. oeni Oe114-46 demonstrated comparable MLF performance to the commercial strain of O. oeni Oe450 PreAc. Furthermore, the corresponding SynComs (Oe144-46/LpXJ25) exhibited improved fermentation properties, leading to increased viable cell counts of both species, more rapid and thorough MLF, and increased concentrations of important aroma compounds, such as linalool, 4-terpinenol, alpha-terpineol, diethyl succinate, and ethyl lactate. These findings highlight the remarkable MLF performance of indigenous O. oeni and O. oeniL. plantarum microbial communities, emphasizing their immense potential in improving MLF efficiency and wine quality.

Aims This study was designed to develop a biosafety incident response competence scale and evaluate its validity and reliability among clinical nurses. Design This study employed a sequential approach, comprising four phases: (1) the establishment of a multidimensional conceptual model, (2) the preliminary selection of the items, (3) further exploration and psychometric testing of the items, (4) the application of the scale among clinical nurses. Methods The biosafety incident response competence conceptual model was developed through literature review and the Delphi method. A total of 1,712 clinical nurses participated in the preliminary items selection, while 1,027 clinical nurses were involved in the further psychometric testing from July 2023 to August 2023. The item analysis, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to evaluate the construct validity. Reliability was measured using Cronbach's alpha, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability, while validity analysis included content validity, structural validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. From September to November 2023, we conducted a survey using the established scale with a total of 4338 valid questionnaires collected. T-test and variance analysis was employed to determine potential variations in biosafety incident response competence based on participants characteristics. Results The final scale is composed of 4 factors and 29 items, including monitoring and warning abilities, nursing disposal abilities, biosafety knowledge preparedness, and infection protection abilities. The explanatory variance of the 4 factors was 75.100%. The Cronbach's alpha, split-half reliability and test-retest reliability were 0.974, 0.945 and 0.840 respectively. The Scale-level content validity index was 0.866. Melatonin partially rescues defects induced by tranexamic acid exposure during oocyte maturation in mice

Tranexamic acid (TXA) is widely used among young women because of its ability to whiten skin and treat menorrhagia. Nevertheless, its potential effects on oocyte maturation and quality have not yet been clearly clarified. Melatonin (MT) is an endogenous hormone released by the pineal gland and believed to protect cells from oxidative stress injury. In the present study, we used an in vitro maturation model to investigate the toxicity of TXA and the protective role of MT in mouse oocytes. Compared with the control group, the TXA-exposed group had significantly lower nuclear maturation (57.72% vs. 94.08%, P < 0.001) and early embryo cleavage rates (38.18% vs. 87.66%, P < 0.001). Further study showed that spindle organization (52.56% vs. 18.77%, P < 0.01) and chromosome alignment (33.23% vs. 16.66%, P < 0.01) were also disrupted after TXA treatment. Mechanistically, we have demonstrated that TXA induced early apoptosis of oocytes (P < 0.001) by raising the level of reactive oxygen species (P < 0.001), which was consistent with an increase in mitochondrial damage (P < 0.01). Fortunately, all these effects except the spindle defect were successfully rescued by an appropriate level of MT. Collectively, our findings indicate that MT could partially reverse TXA-induced oocyte quality deterioration in mice by effectively improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Tranexamic acid is increasingly used to whiten skin, reverse dermal damages, and treat heavy menstrual bleeding in young women. However, its potential toxicity in mammalian oocytes is still unclear. Our study revealed that tranexamic acid exposure impaired the mouse oocyte quality and subsequent embryo development. Meanwhile, melatonin has been found to exert beneficial effects in reducing tranexamic acid-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.

Moisture removal behaviour of single hard lignite particle during drying and quantitative characterization for its surface damage

It is extremely meaningful to study the damage behaviour of lignite for safe operation during the drying process. In this study, a single hard lignite particle (SHLP) was prepared for drying. The drying characteristics of an SHLP were described, and its drying kinetics were studied from the perspective of the drying model and effective diffusion coefficient (D-eff). The development of surface cracks in drying were obtained, and the changes in surface damage were quantitatively described by relative crack rate (RCR). The results showed that the drying process for an SHLP was divided into three stages following the slope of the drying curve. The rapid removal of a large proportion of moisture mainly occurred in stage I. The Page model is the best model for describing the drying of an SHLP. In addition, D-eff increased with increasing drying time. High temperature promoted the moisture transfer from the inside to the surface of an SHLP. Finally, surface cracks on the SHLP developed rapidly in the early drying stage;specifically, the primary cracks widened and lengthened, and the small cracks mainly attached to the primary cracks. In the later drying stage, cracks shrank and cracks in the branch structure closed. High drying temperature made the RCR of an SHLP reach the maximum value more quickly in stage I.

High-Temperature Performance of the 4H-SiC n-p-n Bipolar UV Phototransistor

Excellent high-temperature performance (298-523 K) of the 4H-SiC n-p-n bipolar phototransistor detector (PTD) was explored. It was fabricated using the 4H-SiC epitaxial wafer grown by high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD). The static and dynamic properties of the device were tested and analyzed. The results show that the device still has an optical gain of up to 103, a wide linear response range, and good repeatability at the high temperatures up to 523 K under a 3-V bias with a wavelength of 360 nm. The temperature coefficient of the optical gain is extracted, the value of which is 1.02/K. Although the response time of the device increases with the temperature, the increased percentage in responsivity is significantly greater than that of the response time. The results provide an important experimental reference for the application of high-temperature detection and suggest that the PTD has the potential to be used in ultraviolet (UV) detecting systems at high temperatures.

Regulating the Entire Journey of Pesticide Application on Surfaces of Hydrophobic Leaves Modified by Pathogens at Different Growth Stages

Under the background of the strategy of reducing pesticide application and increasing efficiency, the mechanism and common technology of efficient and accurate target deposition of chemical pesticides are the key development direction. The interaction between pesticide droplets and a leaf surface affects the deposition behavior of pesticides. However, cucumber leaf surface modified by powdery mildew pathogens at different growth stages is more hydrophobic than a normal leaf surface, which hinders the accurate deposition of pesticides on cucumber powdery mildew leaves. here, an effective strategy for controlling pesticide efficiency for the entire journey of pesticide application is proposed. Based on the impact dynamics of droplets, the dynamic direction of droplet bounce is determined, the trajectory of droplet rebound is preliminarily determined, and the pinning sites formed by droplets on the surface of cucumber leaves with powdery mildew are confirmed. By analyzing the dynamics in the retraction stage and the energy dissipation rate for droplets after impact, the basic parameters that can be used to simply characterize droplet rebound are screened out, and the effect of addition of an effective surfactant is determined by characterizing the basic parameters (energy dissipation rate, retraction rate, recovery coefficient). The molecular structure formed by the addition of nonionic surfactant in pesticide solution is more appropriate to the interaction between the powdery mildew layer and the pesticide solution, which ensured that the droplets are well wet and deposited on cucumber powdery mildew leaves. Meanwhile, a force balance model for the pesticide droplet wetting state is established to calculate the pinning force for the droplet and predict the transition direction for the droplet wetting state.
