Equid herpesvirus type 8 (EqHV-8) is known to cause abortion, respiratory signs, and viral encephalitis in equines. EqHV-8 has been reported to cause serious economic losses in large-scale donkey farms in China. However, little is known about the viral replication and immune reaction in the brains and lungs of EqHV-8induced C57BL/6J mice. We determined the pathogenicity and immune status in a mice model. The C57BL/ 6J mice were infected with the EqHV-8 donkey/Shandong/10/2021 strain, and the clinical signs and body weights were evaluated every day. In addition, viremia, virus loads, and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mice brains and lungs were assessed at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days post infection (dpi). Our results demonstrated that mice in the EqHV-8 infected group displayed body weight loss, dyspnea signs, and viremia. The expression of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, interferon (IFN)-gamma, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-6 mRNA was increased in the brains and lungs of EqHV-8-infected mice than that in control group at 5 dpi and 7 dpi, and IL-12a expression was increased at 7 dpi. These data indicated that EqHV-8 elicited a strong cytokines response, caused neurogenic disease and respiratory signs in C57BL/6J mice, thus revealing the pathogenicity of EqHV-8.

Adjusting the surface structures and electronic structures of metal nanocrystals (NCs) by the metal-organic interface interaction is an emerging strategy to enhance their electrocatalytic behavior. In this work, the D-phenylalanine-functionalized graphene (DPHE-GS) anchoring Pd NCs (denoted as Pd/DPHE-GS) was fabricated via the diazo-reaction followed by a simple chemical reduction. Owing to the metal-organic interface interaction between Pd NCs and DPHE, the size, distribution and electronic structures of Pd NCs on the surface of DPHE-GS can be adjusted. Therefore, the Pd/DPHE-GS shows the highest electrocatalytic activity and the most robust long-term durability and stability towards methanol and ethanol oxidation reaction (MOR and EOR) compared to the commercial Pd/C and other counterparts. This work presents an effective interface engineering strategy to enhance electrocatalytic property. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Aim: A specific, valid and reliable measure is much needed to dynamically assess the recovery of symptoms in oesophagectomy patients. This study describes developing and validating the Convalescent Symptom Assessment Scale for oesophagectomy patients (CSAS_EC). Design: An instrument development and cross-sectional validation study was conducted. Methods: This study consists of two components: instrument development and psychometric tests. In instrument development, the literature review, qualitative interviews, Delphi method expert consultation and face validation were used to develop and refine scale content. In psychometric tests, the clinical test version scale was used to conduct a cross-sectional in the thoracic surgery department from 17 June to 20 November 2022. The Classical Test Theory and Multidimensional Item Response Theory (MIRT) analyses examined psychometric properties. Results: In instrument development, literature review (n = 20), qualitative interviews (n = 21), expert consultation (n = 12) and pre-survey (n = 15) led to the development of the clinical test version scale. In psychometric tests, a total of 331 participants were enrolled. Confirmatory factor analysis and MIRT analysis verified that a model with 28 items in four dimensions was good. The four dimensions were early recovery symptoms, late recovery symptoms, persistent present symptoms and psychosocial symptoms. The Cronbach's alpha is 0.827. The validity and reliability were demonstrated to be acceptable. Conclusions: The CSAS_EC scale can be used as a tool to evaluate the recovery status of oesophagectomy patients.

The development of low-cost and high-performance electrocatalyst-supporting materials is desirable and necessary for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Here, we report a facile and universal template-free approach for the first time to synthesize three-dimensional (3D) flower-like ionic liquid-functionalized graphene (IL-RGO). Then, the crystalline Pd nanoparticles were anchored on IL-RGO by a simple wet chemical growth method without a surfactant (denoted as Pd/IL-RGO). In particular, the IL is conducive to form a 3D flower-like structure. The optimized Pd/IL-RGO-2 presents a much-promoted electrocatalytic performance toward the EOR compared with commercial Pd/C catalysts, which is mainly derived from the grafted IL on RGO and the unique 3D flower-like structure. In detail, the IL can control, stabilize, and disperse the Pd nanocrystals as well as serving as the solvent and electrolyte in the microenvironment of the EOR, and the 3D flower-like structure endows the Pd/IL-RGO with high surface areas and rich opened channels, thereby kinetically accelerating the charge/mass transfers. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong electronic interaction between Pd and IL-RGO generates a downshift of d(center) for Pd and thereby enhances the durability toward CO-like intermediates and electrocatalytic reaction kinetics.

Purpose: The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the effectiveness of promoted resilience intervention to facilitate resilience, self -efficacy, coping mode, and social support for oesophageal cancer patients in rural China. Methods: A two -arm, parallel design, single -blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted in a comprehensive tertiary hospital in Anhui from August 2021 to September 2022. A total of 82 oesophageal cancer patients were assigned to two groups via blocked randomization. The intervention group (n = 41) received the Promoted Psychological Resilience Intervention based on survivors' experiences and the control group (n = 41) received routine care. Study data were collected using the sociodemographic information, Connor -Davidson Resilience Scale, Strategies Used by People to Promote Health, Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire, and Perceived Social Support Scale. Results: The groups were well-balanced at baseline. Post -intervention and three months after intervention, the resilience, self -efficacy, acceptance -resignation, and social support were all significantly different in the intervention and control groups (p < 0.05 for each). The main effect of group, time, and the interaction between group and time was statistically significant in the scores of resilience, self -efficacy, acceptance -resignation, and social support, except for the factor of selfdetermination and friends support (p < 0.05 for each). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that an intervention program based on the experiences of long-term oesophageal cancer survivors can promote patients' resilience.

(Z)-3-hexenol, a small gaseous molecule, is produced in plants under biotic stress and induces defense responses in neighboring plants. However, little is known about how (Z)-3-hexenol induces plant defense-related signaling. In this study, we uncovered how (Z)-3-hexenol treatment enhances plant resistance to insect attacks by increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) contents in Arabidopsis leaves. First, (Z)-3-hexenol increases the intracellular content of calcium as secondary messenger in Arabidopsis leaf mesophyll cells. Both intracellular and extracellular calcium stores regulate changes in calcium content. Then, CML8 and GAD4 transmit calcium signaling to affect (Z)-3-hexenol induced GABA content and plant resistance. Herein, CML8 interaction with GAD4 was examined via yeast two-hybrid assays, firefly luciferase complementation imaging, and GST pull-down assays. These results indicate that (Z)-3-hexenol treatment increased the GABA contents in Arabidopsis leaves based on CML8 and GAD4, thus increasing plant resistance to the insect Plutella xylostella. This study revealed the mechanism of activating plant insect defense induced by (Z)-3-hexenol, which guides the study of volatiles as biological pest control.
