Effect of LDH core size on the tribological properties of solvent-free nanofluids

Solvent-free nanofluids (NFs) based on a variety of lubrication core materials have attracted extensive attention in tribology, but it is still an open field to explore the relationship between size of core and tribological properties of NFs. In this paper, the multi-layer, ultrathin and ultrafine layered double hydroxides solvent-free nanofluids (ML-LDH-NFs, UT-LDH-NFs and UF-LDH-NFs) are proposed for lubricant. Compared with UT-LDH-NFs, ML-LDHNFs exhibit better friction reduction and wear resistance performance for the interlayer sliding in multi-layer layered double hydroxides, UF-LDH-NFs with smaller lateral size is easier to slip into the sliding interface to form tribofilm, and thus provide more effective friction-reducing and anti-wear. This research provides fundamental insights into size effects of core materials for solvent-free nanofluids lubricants.

Separation of cadaverine from fermentation broths by salting-out

BACKGROUND: Cadaverine is an important diamine to synthesize nylon. However, the lower product concentration in the cadaverine production makes the downstream separation more complex and costly, and has become a bottleneck for large-scale production. Therefore, in this study, the salting-out was used to efficiently separate cadaverine in the simulated fermentation broth. RESULTS: After analyzing the pH of readily soluble potassium salts, three alkaline salting-out agents-K3PO4, K2CO3 and K4P2O7-were utilized to perform the salting-out separation of cadaverine. The effects of the type and concentration of salting-out agents and cadaverine concentration on the distribution and selection behavior of cadaverine in the simulated fermentation broth were investigated. Particularly, when the concentration of cadaverine was 10 wt% and the K(3)PO(4 )concentration was 500 g/kg, the recovery rate of cadaverine in the simulated fermentation broth with K3PO4 salting-out agent was as high as 99.6%, which was significantly higher than that of other salting-out agents, and only 0.01 wt% cadaverine remained in the aqueous phase. CONCLUSION: The salting-out ability of the three inorganic salts to cadaverine in the simulated fermentation broth was K3PO4>K2CO3 >K4P2O7. Furthermore, within a certain range of cadaverine concentrations, the content of cadaverine in the aqueous phase and the amount of water residue in the organic phase could be calculated using a linear regression equation. Since inorganic salts have the advantages of good stability, low cost, non-toxicity and harmlessness, the salting-out process established in this study shows good potential for industrial application. Humanising teacher education through translanguaging: experiences from an online English-medium instruction (EMI) course

This study examines how a teacher educator perceives and enacts translanguaging to humanise teacher education in an online English-medium instruction (EMI) course in China. Drawing on multiple sources of data, including classroom observations and the post-course interview, the findings reveal a set of translanguaging strategies, which helped the teacher educator humanise the students, field of knowledge, as well as himself in the online course. The findings enrich the existing understanding about the intertwined and mutually supportive relationship between translanguaging and humanising pedagogy. In particular, the study shows that when translanguaging is used in an embodied, emergent, and interactive manner, it can create a humanising space to support students' content learning and whole-person development. The paper concludes with a clarion call for humanising teaching and teacher education through translanguaging in increasingly globalised and multilingual classrooms.

With the development of new energy vehicles, there is a growing demand for automotive interior materials that meet higher standards. In this case, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), being a completely recyclable environment-friendly polymer material, possesses advantages such as plasticizers and solvents free, excellent mechanical properties, less volatile organic compounds (VOC) release and low processing cost compared with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU), and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) skins, become a desirable choice for automotive injection molding automotive skin. Hence, this work investigates the influence of hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS) molecular weight, chemical structure, and polypropylene (PP) doping amount on thermodynamic, crystallinity, rheological, and mechanical properties of TPE, which provides a scientific basis for guiding the material selection of TPE injection molding skin.

Explicit teaching of reflective practice (RP) in pre-service teacher education: probing the immediate and long-term influence

Despite the abundance of research exploring the formats, functions, and processes of teacher reflections, many pre-service teachers still perceive it as an abstract and daunting task, owing to the insufficient provision of authentic and practical training and support. This article examines the immediate and long-term effects of explicitly teaching reflective practice (RP) on three student teachers' professional learning in a language pedagogy course within a pre-service teacher education programme. Drawing on data from multiple sources, including semi-structured interviews, field observation, and reflective essays, the findings suggest that student teachers' RP, in terms of its breadth (i.e. content focus) and depth (i.e. discursive use of language), showed immediate improvement after the practical workshops with an explicit focus on RP. In the second round of interviews conducted two years later, the importance of RP was reiterated by the participants, who highlighted the evidence-based nature of RP while outlining practical challenges that hindered their RP in actual school contexts. The findings further highlight the issue of authenticity in RP and provide practical suggestions for pre-service teacher education.

Thermal-Oxidative Aging Behavior and Factors of Polystyrene-Based Thermoplastic Elastomers-Based Automotive Interior Skin

Compared to traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU), and thermoplastic olefin (TPO) materials, thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) offer advantages of complete recyclability, absence of plasticizers and solvents, superior mechanical properties, pleasing tactile characteristics, low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions, and cost-effective processing. Making it an exceptional choice for environmentally friendly automotive skin materials. The automotive skin is frequently subjected to harsh conditions, such as high temperatures and oxygen exposure during use, presenting a significant durability challenge. Therefore, this study focuses on polystyrene (PS)-based thermoplastic elastomers (TPE-S) as the subject and investigates the influence of molecular weight, PS content, and chain structure in the blend on the mechanical properties of TPE-S using an accelerated thermal-oxidative aging method. Meanwhile, the changes of TPE-S during the aging process are discussed via molecular weight, crystalline structure, molecular chain structure, microphase separation structure, and tactile sensation, providing a scientific foundation for guiding the selection of TPE-S in automobile skin and heat oxidative aging resistance ability.

Comparative organelle genomics in Daphniphyllaceae reveal phylogenetic position and organelle structure evolution

The family Daphniphyllaceae has a single genus, and no relevant comparative phylogenetic study has been reported on it. To explore the phylogenetic relationships and organelle evolution mechanisms of Daphniphyllaceae species, we sequenced and assembled the chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes of Daphniphyllum macropodum. We also conducted comparative analyses of organelles in Daphniphyllaceae species in terms of genome structure, phylogenetic relationships, divergence times, RNA editing events, and evolutionary rates, etc. Results indicated differences in the evolutionary patterns of the plastome and mitogenome in D. macropodum. The plastome had a more conserved structure but a faster nucleotide substitution rate, and the mitogenome showed a more complex structure while the mitotic genome shows a more complex structure but a slower nucleotide substitution rate. We identified several unidirectional protein-coding gene transfer events from the plastome to the mitogenome based on homology analysis, but no transfer events occurred from the mitogenome to the plastome. Multiple TE fragments existed in organelle genomes, and two organelles showed different preferences for nuclear TE insertion types. The estimation of divergence time indicated that the differentiation of Daphniphyllaceae and Altingiaceae at around 29.86 Mya might be due to the dramatic uplift of Tibetan Plateau during the Oligocene. About 75% of codon changes in organelles were found to be hydrophilic to hydrophobic amino acids. The RNA editing in protein-coding transcripts is the result of amino acid changes to increase their hydrophobicity and conservation in alleles, which may contribute to the formation of functional 3D structures in proteins. This study would enrich genomic resources and provide valuable insights into the structural dynamics and molecular biology of Daphniphyllaceae species.

System identification is crucial for modeling dynamical systems, especially with noisy measurements. Traditional methods like least-squares provide asymptotic confidence regions, which are inadequate for situations requiring non-asymptotic guarantees. This paper introduces a sample-based method to construct non-asymptotic confidence ellipsoids around instrumental variable estimates for linear regression models with endogenous regressor. Our approach ensures that the confidence regions include the true system parameters with a user-specified probability, independent of sample size, under the condition of a known noise distribution. Acute liver injury (ALI) is a prevalent inflammatory disease with no currently available effective targeted therapies that characterized by high mortality and morbidity. Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a derivative of the renowned antimalarial compound artemisinin, has garnered attention for its anti-inflammatory property. However, the precise anti-inflammatory mechanisms underlying its efficacy in treating ALI remain unclear. Notably, the excessive inflammatory cytokines secreted by macrophages represents a critical factor of liver damage. In our comprehensive study, transcriptome and proteomic analysis of M1 macrophages after DHA treatment was performed to unearth the potential anti-inflammatory targets for ALI treatment. Transcriptomics analysis indicated that DHA significantly mitigated inflammation, primarily by downregulating the expressions of CCL1, CCL2, CCL7, CCL13, and CXCL13. Concurrently, proteomics analysis identified six proteins, such as CYBA and CYBB, that were consistently downregulated in the DHA intervention groups compared to the M1 group. Intriguingly, a protein-protein interaction network analysis highlighted the close association of CYBA and CYBB with the aforementioned chemokine genes. Through meticulous screening, DHA curtailed the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by targeting CYBA and CYBB, subsequently suppressing the secretion of several chemokines and dampening the inflammatory response in M1 macrophages. More importantly, DHA not only reduced ROS and chemokine levels but also restored liver function by downregulating CYBA and CYBB to inhibit NF-kappa B pathway in ALI mice, demonstrating strong anti-inflammatory effects. In conclusion, our findings throw novel light into the underlying anti-inflammatory mechanism of DHA in ALI management, offering valuable insights for future clinical research and therapeutic strategies for inflammatory diseases.

Influenza, driven by highly mutable RNA viruses, poses a major global health threat, exacerbated by the frequent emergence of antiviral resistance. To tackle this challenge, we developed hydrophobic tag tethering degradation (HyTTD) technology to enhance the efficacy of oseltamivir against resistant strains. Among these, compound L12, featuring a 1-adamantylamine hydrophobic tag attached via a nine-carbon linker, demonstrated exceptional antiviral activity, with a 157-fold improvement in potency (EC50 = 0.68 mu M) against the oseltamivir-resistant H1N1-H274Y strain compared to oseltamivir (EC50 = 106.8 mu M), and minimal cytotoxicity at 50 mu M. Western blot and immunofluorescence analyses demonstrated that L12 selectively induced the degradation of viral neuraminidase (NA) and inhibited nucleoprotein (NP) expression in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistic studies revealed that L12 did not interfere with NA synthesis but promotes NA protein degradation through ubiquitination. These results highlight the pioneering application of HyTTD in overcoming antiviral resistance, showcasing it as a powerful platform for future drug development.
