High-throughput growth of organic scintillating single crystal fibers for neutron/gamma pulse shape discrimination

The organic scintillation single crystals grown by conventional methods typically exhibit intrinsic crystal habits and lack machinability to be processed into suitable forms to match different application scenarios. Here, a mold-embedded growth (MEG) method is reported for the batch growth of organic scintillating single crystal fibers (SCFs). The SCFs, each embedded in a capillary glass shell, manifest homogeneous orientation, high crystallinity and satisfactory optical properties. Moreover, they can be directly integrated into pixelated scintillator arrays with various shapes. As exemplified by the organic scintillation crystal of 9,10-diphenylanthrance (DPA)-doped p-terphenyl, the pixelated fiber array shows higher performance in neutron detection compared to the monolithic organic single crystal, with the figure of merit (FOM) value of 3.684 versus 2.824 for neutron/gamma pulse shape discrimination (PSD), which could be attributed to the light-guiding effect and lower lateral optical crosstalk in the array composed of SCFs.

Construction of functionalized In-based metal organic framework/BiOCl1−xIx Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline: Performance and mechanism

The environmental implications of antibiotics have drawn widespread attention. Numerous monomer-based bismuth oxide halide catalysts have been extensively studied to remove tetracycline (TC) from aquatic environments. Integrating bismuth oxide halide composites with In-based metal organic framework (NH2-MIL-68(In)) might potentially serve as a novel strategy. By meticulously adjusting Cl and I within the composite bismuth halide oxide (B-x), a suite of purpose built heterojunctions (NMB-x) were synthesized, which were engineered to facilitate the efficient photodegradation of TC in simulated and actual aquatic environments. The incorporation of Z-scheme heterojunctions yielded a significant enhancement in photocatalytic responsiveness and charge carrier separation. Notably, NMB-0.3 demonstrated remarkable TC removal efficiency of 88.52 ± 3.05%, which is 3.74 times of B-0.3 within 90 min. The apparent quantum yield was also increased from 8.97% (B-0.3) to 19.68% (NMB-0.3). The removal of TC from natural water bodies was also assessed. Moreover, the photocatalyst concentration, assessed using response surface method, was found to show influential factors on TC removal. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) simulations were employed to identify vulnerable sites within TC. Intermediates and pathways in the photodegradation of TC have also been inferred. Furthermore, a comprehensive environmental toxicity assessment of representative intermediates demonstrated that these intermediates exhibited significantly reduced environmental toxicity compared to TC. This study provides a new approach to the design strategy of efficient and environmentally friendly MOF-based photocatalysts. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

High-Throughput Growth of Armored Perovskite Single Crystal Fibers for Pixelated Arrays

The poor machinability of halide perovskite crystals severely hampered their practical applications. Here a high-throughput growth method is reported for armored perovskite single-crystal fibers (SCFs). The mold-embedded melt growth (MEG) method provides each SCF with a capillary quartz shell, thus guaranteeing their integrality when cutting and polishing. Hundreds of perovskite SCFs, exemplified by CsPbBr3, CsPbCl3, and CsPbBr2.5I0.5, with customized dimensions (inner diameters of 150-1000 mu m and length of several centimeters), are grown in one batch, with all the SCFs bearing homogeneity in shape, orientation, and optical/electronic properties. Versatile assembly protocols are proposed to directly integrate the SCFs into arrays. The assembled array detectors demonstrated low-level dark currents (< 1 nA) with negligible drift, low detection limit (< 44.84 nGy s(-1)), and high sensitivity (61147 mu C Gy(-1) cm(-2)). Moreover, the SCFs as isolated pixels are free of signal crosstalk while showing uniform X-ray photocurrents, which is in favor of high spatial resolution X-ray imaging. As both MEG and the assembly of SCFs involve none sophisticated processes limiting the scalable fabrication, the strategy is considered to meet the preconditions of high-throughput productions.

Total saponins from Panax japonicus (TSPJ) have many beneficial physiological activities, particularly in alleviating the damages of aging and abnormal lipid metabolism. This work used mice models to investigate if TSPJ reduced obesity and regulated metabolic functions via the intestinal microbiota, the disturbance of which has been shown to cause aging-related diseases. The results showed that TSPJ significantly reduced the weight and blood lipid level of aging mice. Further analyses showed that TSPJ significantly inhibited adipogenesis, changed the composition of the intestinal flora, and protected the integrity of the intestinal barrier. It was inferred from the accumulated experimental data that TSPJ helped to combat obesity in aging mice by regulating the intestinal microbiota and promoting microbial metabolism.

Telomeres shorten with each cell division, serving as biomarkers of aging, with human tissues exhibiting short telomeres and restricted telomerase expression. In contrast, mice have longer telomeres and widespread telomerase activity, limiting their relevance as models for human telomere biology. To address this, we engineer a mouse strain with a humanized mTert gene (hmTert), replacing specific non-coding sequences with human counterparts. The hmTert gene, which is repressed in adult tissues except the gonads and thymus, closely mimics human TERT regulation. This modification rescues telomere dysfunction in mTert-knockout mice. Successive intercrosses of Terth/- mice stabilized telomere length below 10 kb, while Terth/h mice achieve a human-like average length of 10-12 kb, compared to 50 kb in wildtype mice. Despite shortened telomeres, Terth/h mice maintain normal body weight and cell homeostasis. These mice, with humanized telomere regulation, represent a valuable model to study human aging and cancer.

In order to investigate the motion characteristics of the abrasive media in the vibratory finishing, the RecurDyn and EDEM coupled simulation method is employed. The simulation results show that the trajectories of the abrasive media are annular spiral motions in general, including a circular motion about the central axis of the vibratory finishing machine and an elliptical motion around the center of the media flow. The reliability of the RecurDyn-EDEM coupled simulation for the vibratory surface finishing process is validated by X-ray real-time detection, which has significance in better understanding of the motion characteristics of abrasive media and the optimal design of the vibratory surface finishing processes. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Do conference-journal articles receive more citations? A case study in physics

Conference-journal articles, which are expanded versions of conference proceedings papers, play an essential role in disseminating scientific knowledge but remain understudied. In the context of increasingly stringent research evaluation systems, this study focuses on conference-journal articles, examining the effectiveness of journals in selecting conference-derived publications. We also explore the factors influencing the citations of conference-journal articles. Here, we focused on Physics, analyzing 59,329 conference-journal articles published between 2012 and 2020, matched with general journal articles and conference proceedings papers based on the conference and journal. Results show that conference-journal articles receive significantly more citations than conference proceedings papers but fewer than general journal articles. Conference-journal articles in special issues receive fewer citations than those in regular issues. A U-shaped pattern emerges between the duration from the conference convening to the journal publication and the citation. We also found that conferences with sponsorship and those held in OECD member countries are more likely to produce highly cited conference-journal articles. Additionally, results indicate that conferences held in the USA, Japan, France, China, and Poland produce the most conference-journal articles, with articles from conferences in the USA, Japan, and France receiving relatively high citation counts. In contrast, articles from conferences held in China and Poland receive relatively low citation counts. This research provides valuable insights for academic conference committees, journal managers, and conference participants.

BackgroundCollaborative reading can facilitate students' understanding of complex learning materials. High-quality annotations provided by peer learners are essential for successful collaborative reading. However, it remains to be understood how annotation quality affects reading *** simulated collaborative reading environment was constructed for interactive highlighting and commenting. The environment was used to conduct a laboratory experiment and examine the benefits of reading annotations by ***-seven college students participated in the study and were randomly assigned to two conditions. The constructive annotation group was provided with annotations containing information that pertained to the constructive level of cognitive processing, while the active annotation group was supplied with annotations containing information that pertained to the active level of cognitive processing. Pre- and post-tests were used to measure learning gains. System log files and eye-tracking data were analysed to compare and contrast the differences in underlying *** and ConclusionsThe results showed that constructive and active annotations incurred different reading patterns, with the constructive annotations attracting more attention than the active annotations. The results implied that instructors could use seed annotations of a constructive level in reading assignments to facilitate reading comprehension.

Background Vasculopathy is the most common complication of diabetes. Endothelial cells located in the innermost layer of blood vessels are constantly affected by blood flow or vascular components;thus, their mechanosensitivity plays an important role in mediating vascular regulation. Endothelial damage, one of the main causes of hyperglycemic vascular complications, has been extensively studied. However, the role of mechanosensitive signaling in hyperglycemic endothelial damage remains *** Vascular endothelial-specific Piezo1 knockout mice were generated to investigate the effects of Piezo1 on Streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia and vascular endothelial injury. In vitro activation or knockdown of Piezo1 was performed to evaluate the effects on the proliferation, migration, and tubular function of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in high glucose. Reactive oxygen species production, mitochondrial membrane potential alternations, and oxidative stress-related products were used to assess the extent of oxidative stress damage caused by Piezo1 *** Our study found that in VECreERT2;Piezo1flox/flox mice with Piezo1 conditional knockout in vascular endothelial cells, Piezo1 deficiency alleviated streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia with reduced apoptosis and abscission of thoracic aortic endothelial cells, and decreased the inflammatory response of aortic tissue caused by high glucose. Moreover, the knockout of Piezo1 showed a thinner thoracic aortic wall, reduced tunica media damage, and increased endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression in transgenic mice, indicating the relief of endothelial damage caused by hyperglycemia. We also showed that Piezo1 activation aggravated oxidative stress injury and resulted in severe dysfunction through the Ca2+-induced CaMKII-Nrf2 axis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
