Highly efficient selective hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone over Cu-Re/TiO2 bimetallic catalysts

Highly active and thermally stable Cu-Re bimetallic catalysts supported on TiO2 with 2.0 wt% loading of Cu were prepared via an incipient wetness impregnation method and were applied for liquid phase selective hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) in H-2. The effect of the molar ratios of Cu : Re on the physico-chemical properties and the catalytic performance of the Cu-Re/TiO2 catalysts was investigated. Moreover, the influence of various reaction parameters on the hydrogenation of LA to GVL was studied. The results showed that the Cu-Re/TiO2 catalyst with a 1 : 1 molar ratio of Cu to Re (Cu-Re(1 : 1)/TiO2) exhibited the highest performance for the reaction. Complete conversion of LA with a 100% yield of GVL was achieved in 1,4-dioxane solvent under the reaction conditions of 180 degrees C, 4.0 MPa H-2 for 4 h, and the catalyst could be reused at least 6 times with only a slight loss of activity. Combined with the characterization results, the high performance of the catalyst was mainly attributed to the well-dispersed Cu-Re nanoparticles with a very fine average size (ca. 0.69 nm) and the co-presence of Cu-Re bimetal and ReOx on the catalyst surface.

This paper presents an event-triggered anti-disturbance control scheme for the trajectory tracking of ships with time-varying ocean disturbances and actuator saturation. By combining the disturbance observer with the auxiliary dynamic system, a robust disturbance observer-based control is designed with the backstepping technique and event-triggered mechanism. The disturbance observer provides the on-line time-varying disturbance estimations. The auxiliary dynamic system helps to reduce the actuator saturation effects. The event-triggered mechanism avoids the wear and tear of actuators through implementing the control signals on triggering periods. It is theoretically proven that the event-triggered anti-disturbance controller achieves the trajectory tracking and all signals in the closed-loop tracking control systems are uniformly ultimately bounded. Illustrative simulations on a 1:70 scaled model ship confirm the event-triggered anti-disturbance tracking control.

Due to the inherent resistance of bacterial biofilms to antibiotics and their serious threat to global public health, novel therapeutic agents and strategies to tackle biofilms are urgently needed. To this end, we designed and synthesized a novel guanidinium-functionalized pillar[5]arene (GP5) that exhibited high antibacterial potency against Gram-negative E. coli (BH101) and Gram-positive S. aureus (ATCC25904) strains. More importantly, GP5 effectively disrupted preformed E. coli biofilms by efficient penetration through biofilm barriers and subsequent destruction of biofilm-enclosed bacteria. Furthermore, host-guest complexation between GP5 and cefazolin sodium, a conventional antibiotic that otherwise shows negligible activity against biofilms, exhibited much enhanced, synergistic disruption activity against E. coli biofilms, thus providing a novel supramolecular platform to effectively disrupt biofilms.

Plasmonic metal nanostructures have promising applications in biosensing due to their ability to facilitate light-matter interaction. However, the damping of noble metal leads to a wide full width at half maximum (FWHM) spectrum which restricts sensing capabilities. Herein, we present a novel non-full-metal nanostructure sensor, namely indium tin oxide (ITO)-Au nanodisk arrays consisting of periodic arrays of ITO nanodisk arrays and a continuous gold substrate. A narrow-band spectral feature under normal incidence emerges in the visible region, corresponding to the mode-coupling of surface plasmon modes, which are excited by lattice resonance at metal interfaces with magnetic resonance mode. The FWHM of our proposed nanostructure is barely 14 nm, which is one fifth of that of full-metal nanodisk arrays, and effectively improves the sensing performance. Furthermore, the thickness variation of nanodisks hardly affects the sensing performance of this ITO-based nanostructure, ensuring excellent tolerance during preparation. We fabricate the sensor ship using template transfer and vacuum deposition techniques to achieve large-area and low-cost nanostructure preparation. The sensing performance is used to detect immunoglobulin G (IgG) protein molecules, promoting the widespread application of plasmonic nanostructures in label-free biomedical studies and point-of-care diagnostics. The introduction of dielectric materials effectively reduces FWHM, but sacrifices sensitivity. Therefore, utilizing structural configurations or introducing other materials to generate mode-coupling and hybridization is an effective way to provide local field enhancement and effective regulation.

Nanocatalytic tumor therapy based on Fenton nanocatalysts has attracted considerable attention because of its therapeutic specificity, enhanced outcomes, and high biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the rate-determining step in Fenton chemistry, which involves the transition of a high-valence metallic center (FeIII) to a Fenton-active low-valence metallic center (FeII), has hindered advances in nanocatalyst-based therapeutics. In this study, we constructed mesoporous single iron atomic nanocatalysts (mSAFe NCs) by employing catechols from dopamine to coordinate and isolate single iron atoms. The catechols also serve as reductive ligands, generating a field-effect-based cocatalytic system that instantly reduces FeIII species to FeII species within the mSAFe NCs. This self-motivated cocatalytic strategy enabled by mSAFe NCs accelerates the kinetics of the Fenton catalytic reaction, resulting in remarkable performance for nanocatalytic tumor therapy both in vitro and in vivo. Catechol-isolated mesoporous single iron atomic nanocatalysts (mSAFe NCs) with ligand-field-effect-promoted cocatalytic Fenton catalysis have been constructed. The catechols from dopamine serve as both an iron coordination site for atomic isolation and a reductive ligand to generate a field-effect-based cocatalytic system that instantly reduces FeIII species to FeII species within the mSAFe NCs, thereby promoting in vivo Fenton catalytic effects against tumors.+image

Adaptive optics has been widely used in biological science to recover high-resolution optical image deep into the tissue,where optical distortion detection with high speed and accuracy is strongly ***,we introduce convolutional neural networks,one of the most popular machine learning models,into Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor(SHWS)to simplify optical distortion detection *** image segmentation or centroid positioning algorithm,the trained network could estimate up to 36th Zernike mode coefficients directly from a full SHWS image within 1.227ms on a personal computer,and achieves prediction accuracy up to 97.4%.The simulation results show that the average root mean squared error in phase residuals of our method is 75.64%lower than that with the modal-based SHWS *** the high detection accuracy and simplified detection processes,this work has the potential to be applied in wavefront sensor-based adaptive optics for in vivo deep tissue imaging.

Construction of Cu―Ni Atomic Pair with Bimetallic Atom-Cluster Sites for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction

Developing atomically dispersed metal on nitrogen-doped carbon (M & horbar;N & horbar;C) catalyst provides a promising strategy to convert CO2 into high-valued chemicals and achieve artificially closed carbon cycles. However, it is challenging to tune the structure and coordination of N & horbar;M bond that further improve the intrinsic activity and selectivity of CO2RR. Herein, CuNi atomic clusters embedded in Ni/Cu dual atomic sites catalysts (CuNiAC@Ni/Cu & horbar;N & horbar;C) are designed and successfully manipulated to regulate the coordination environment for M & horbar;N & horbar;C catalysts to enhance the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR). The most active configuration in CuNiAC@Ni/Cu & horbar;N & horbar;C catalyst is CuNi atomic cluster connected with 2N-bridged (Ni-Cu)N-5, in which two N atoms are shared with NiN4 and CuN3 moieties verified by both systematic advanced characterizations and density function theory (DFT) calculations. The results have revealed the integration between CuNi atomic cluster and N4Ni/CuN3 dual-metal atomic sites that optimize the electronic redistribution and narrow the bandgap, thereby decreasing the energy barrier of the potential determination step and promoting CO production.

A refractive index sensor based on metal-insulator-metal coupling ring resonator with a stub

In this work, a refractive index sensor structure is proposed, which consists of the met-al-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupling with ring resonator with a rectangular cavity. Its sensing characteristics are analyzed by the finite element analysis method. SPPs is an electromagnetic wave mode excited by the oscillatory coupling of free electron-photon interactions on the surface region of a metal, whose field strength is maximum at the metal-dielectric partition interface and then decays exponentially to both sides The results show that the sensing characteristics of the ring resonator can be changed by introducing a stub, which can achieve the purpose of enhancing the coupling efficiency of SPPs. The structure has two Fano peaks, and each peak can be individually regulated by changing the size of the sensing structure. Sensitivity is the key performance indicator of the system, which is the shift in resonance wavelength caused by a change in refractive index when the ambient medium is changed. The best sensitivity of this structure can reach 2,300 nm/RIU with a figure of merit (FOM) value of 60 RIU-1. The proposed structure has great potential in nano-sensors.

Microbial infections have significantly increased over the last decades, and the mortality rates remain unacceptably high. The emergence of new resistance patterns and the spread of new viruses challenge the eradication of infectious diseases. The declining efficacy of antimicrobial drugs has become a global public health problem. Natural products derived from natural sources, such as plants, animals, and microorganisms, have significant efficacy for the treatment of infectious diseases accompanied by less adverse effects, synergy, and ability to overcome drug resistance. As the Chinese female scientist Youyou Tu received the Nobel Prize for the antimalarial drug artemisinin, antimicrobial drugs developed from Traditional Chinese Medicine are expected to receive increasing attention again. This review summarizes the antimicrobial agents derived from natural products approved for nearly 20 years and describes their efficacy and mode of action. The aim of this unit is to review the current status of antimicrobial drugs from natural products in order to increase the value of natural products as a source of novel drug candidates for infectious diseases. Jurassic intracontinental deformation of the central North China Plate: Insights from syn-tectonic sedimentation, structural geology, and U-Pb geochronology of the Yungang Basin, North China

Jurassic tectonism resulted in late Mesozoic intracontinental deformation of the North China Plate. A fold-and- thrust belt, related growth strata, and volcanic materials have been identified in the Jurassic Yungang Basin, which can be used to constrain the timing and scale of faulting and sedimentation. The age of volcanic materials in the growth strata and the sedimentary cycle of Jurassic strata indicate that the late Middle Jurassic Yungang Formation was the earliest sedimentary response to the onset of Jurassic deformation (i.e., the Yanshanian orogeny) from 170 to 160 Ma. Deformation involved detachment and fault propagation folding, which produced a marginal thrust belt and limb rotation of anticline. Restored cross-sections show that the northern basin experienced more intense shortening than the southern basin, consistent with field observations, possibly controlled by the Qifengshan strike-slip fault in the center of the fold-and-thrust belt. Fault striations, conjugate joints, and asymmetric folds show that the Yungang Basin underwent NW-SE-trending compression during the Middle-Late Jurassic. Therefore, we propose that the eastern Ordos Block was in a compressional setting during the Middle-Late Jurassic, due to flat subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate beneath the East Asian continent.
