Correlation between biochemical and clinical hyperandrogenism parameter in polycystic ovary syndrome in relation to age

BackgroundTo assess the correlation between clinical and biochemical hyperandrogenism parameters in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) according to *** prospective study included 256 PCOS patients diagnosed according to the Rotterdam criteria in a university-based hospital. Androgen levels were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Hirsutism, acne, and alopecia were assessed using the modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mF-G) score, Comprehensive Acne Severity Scale (CASS), and the Ludwig scale, respectively. The correlation between biochemical and clinical hyperandrogenism parameters was assessed in younger and older women with *** 256 PCOS patients were classified by age into two groups: age 18-29 years (n = 151) and age 30-40 years (n = 84). In women with PCOS, mF-G was significantly positively correlated with the free androgen index (FAI), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S). CASS had a significant positive correlation with DHEA. mF-G was positively correlated with FAI in those aged 18-29 years, but the correlations were not significant in those aged 30-40 years. The positive correlation between specific body regions of clinical hyperandrogenism, especially mF-G of chin, lower abdomen, and thighs, and testosterone, as well as with FAI, was highest in those aged 18-29 years. In those aged 30-40 years clinical hyperandrogenism was mainly affected by DHEA, DHEA-S, and *** correlation between biochemical and clinical hyperandrogenism parameters varied with age in our East Asian population. Clinical hyperandrogenism was positively correlated with FAI in younger women with PCOS. The correlation between biochemical and clinical hyperandrogenism was not significant in older women with PCOS.

Home networks lack the powerful security tools and trained personnel available in enterprise networks. This complicates efforts to address security risks in residential settings. While prior efforts explore outsourcing network traffic to cloud or cloudlet services, such an approach exposes that network traffic to a third party, which introduces privacy risks, particularly where traffic is decrypted (e.g., using Transport Layer Security Inspection (TLSI)). To enable security screening locally, home networks could introduce new physical hardware, but the capital and deployment costs may impede deployment. In this work, we explore a system to leverage existing available devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, already inside a home network to create a platform for traffic inspection. This software-based solution avoids new hardware deployment and allows decryption of traffic without risk of new third parties. Our investigation compares on-router inspection of traffic with an approach using that same router to direct traffic through smartphones in the local network. Our performance evaluation shows that smartphone middleboxes can substantially increase the throughput of communication from around 10 Mbps in the on-router case to around 90 Mbps when smartphones are used. This approach increases CPU usage at the router by around 15%, with a 20% CPU usage increase on a smartphone (with single core processing). The network packet latency increases by about 120 milliseconds. © 2023 IEEE.

Predictors of response to ovulation induction using letrozole in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

BackgroundThis study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the initial screening characteristics of women with anovulatory polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who did or did not respond to 2.5 mg letrozole (LET).MethodsThe clinical and laboratory characteristics of women with PCOS who underwent LET treatment were evaluated. Women with PCOS were stratified according to their responses to LET (2.5 mg). The potential predictors of their responses to LET were estimated using logistic regression *** retrospective study included 214 eligible patients with a response to 2.5 mg LET (n = 131) or no response to 2.5 mg LET (n = 83). PCOS patients who responded to 2.5 mg LET showed better outcomes than those who did not (2.5 mg LET) for pregnancy rate, live birth rate, pregnancy rate per patient, and live birth rate per patient. Logistic regression analyses showed that late menarche (odds ratio [OR], 1.79 [95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.22-2.64], P = 0.003), and increased anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) (OR, 1.12 [95% CI, 1.02-1.23], P = 0.02), baseline luteinizing hormone (LH)/ follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) (OR, 3.73 [95% CI, 2.12-6.64], P < 0.001), and free androgen index (FAI) (OR, 1.37 [95% CI, 1.16-1.64], P < 0.001) were associated with a higher possibility of no response to 2.5 mg *** patients with an increased LH/FSH ratio, AMH, FAI, and late menarche may need an increased dosage of LET for a treatment response, which could be helpful in designing a personalized treatment strategy.

对于华北克拉通岩石圈破坏,除了岩石圈厚度减薄和地幔性质改变外,最直接的标志是广泛出露的弥散状穹隆构造及伴随的韧性剪切带、低角度正断层和断陷盆地.这些伸展穹隆构造通常被解释为“变质核杂岩”(metamorphic core complex,MCC),但其组成结构、变形机制和深部过程等方面与北美西部盆岭省经典的变质核杂岩存在明显的区别.本文选择华北克拉通北缘的呼和浩特“变质核杂岩”进行剖析和再研究,在前人研究的基础上,聚焦穹隆核、韧性剪切带和低角度滑覆系统之间的时空关系,通过详细的地质填图、构造解析和年代学研究,将一个以简单剪切应变为主的穹型韧性剪切带(变形时间为152~141 Ma)从原伸展系统中剥离,从而揭示出一个以花岗岩为核的热隆-伸展构造.呼和浩特热隆-伸展构造分为3个结构单元.(1)花岗岩核:由早白垩世A型花岗岩(136~127 Ma)组成;(2)纯剪切应变带:分布在核部花岗岩周缘以纯剪切应变为主的高温(>500℃)变形带,面理发育(无线理),可能由核部岩体侵位时体积膨胀导致;(3)低角度滑覆系统:由韧性剪切带、微角砾岩带、低角度正断层和上叠断陷盆地组成,其变形时代为早白垩世(约134~130 Ma),运动学标志指示上部向南东的剪切特征,其演化过程和变形行为受控核部岩体侵位.通过对热隆-伸展构造的厘定,本研究提出热岩石圈背景下由岩浆上侵主导并伴生热变质变形的伸展机制,为进一步理解华北克拉通伸展动力学提供一个新思路.

Non-Line-of-Sight Localization of Passive UHF RFID Tags in Smart Storage Systems

The UHF radio-frequency identification (RFID) has gained growing attention for tagged object localization in smart storage systems. Due to Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) condition, it is challenging to accurately locate the position of tags inside closed spaces. In this paper, we propose a precise and cost-effective solution for tagged object localization in closed spaces, using only received signal strength (RSS) information. We establish a RSS profile for each tag and discover some important features of RSS profiles including uniqueness, time-variation, column-dependence and waveform-similarity. Based on these features, we propose a reference-free RSS-profile (RFRP) localization scheme. The advantage of our propose scheme is to accurately localize multiple tags in closed spaces by overcoming the challenges including the lack of pre-deployed reference tags, NLOS propagation, multi-path propagation and coupling effect. The RFRP scheme first roughly estimates tags' coordinates based on Peak Asymmetry Factor, then acquires reference-tag substitutes through the similarity of RSS sequences. Subsequently, our scheme refines the relative positions of all tags by these substitutes. Finally all tags' absolute positions are estimated through a RSS-ranging model. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that our approach can achieve high ordering accuracy and localization accuracy for the tags inside closed spaces.

Engineering cellular microenvironments with biomaterials is an effective strategy for endothelial cell expansion and functionality in vascular tissue engineering. The basement membrane (BM) is a natural vascular endothelium microenvironment that plays an important role in promoting rapid expansion and function of endothelial cells. However, mimicking the crucial function of BM with an ideal biomaterial remains challenging. In this study, we developed a cell-derived decellularized extracellular matrix (c-dECM) paper to mimic the role of BM in endothelial cell expansion and function. The results showed that c-dECM paper was a stable, biocompatible, and biodegradable scaffold that significantly promoted endothelial cell expansion by modulating cell migration, adhesion, and proliferation both in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, the biomimetic c-dECM paper can profoundly promote endothelial cell function by increasing the synthesis and release of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin I2 (PGI2) and upregulating the expression of anticoagulant and vascularized genes, including thrombomodulin (THBD), tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endoglin (CD105). These data indicate that the c-dECM is a potential biomaterial for constructing vascular tissue engineering scaffolds or developing in vitro models to study the functional mechanisms of endothelial cells.

Single atom(SA)catalysts have achieved great success on highly selective heterogeneous catalysis due to their abundant and homogeneous active *** electronic structures of these active sites,restrained by their localized coordination environments,significantly determine their catalytic performances,which are difficult to ***,we investigated the effect of localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR)on engineering the electronic structures of single atomic ***,core–shell structures consisted of Au core and transition metal SAs loaded N-doped carbon(CN)shell were constructed,namely Au@M-SA/CN(M=Ni,Fe,and Co).It was demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot electrons originated from Au were directionally injected to the M-SAs under visible light irradiation,which significantly changed their electronic structures and meanwhile facilitated improved overall charge separation *** as-prepared Au@Ni-SA/CN exhibited highly efficient and selective photocatalytic CO_(2) reduction to CO performance,which is 20.8,17.5,and 6.9 times those of Au nanoparticles,Au@CN,and Ni-SA/CN,*** spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed that the plasmon enhanced Ni-SA/CN sites featured increased charge density for efficient intermediate activation,contributing to the superb photocatalytic *** work provides a new insight on plasmon and atomic site engineering for efficient and selective catalysis.

Noise and vibration performance of automotive disk brakes with laser-machined M-shaped grooves

This work makes use of experimental and numerical studies to investigate the reduction of braking noise and vibrations of brake disks by introducing various M-shaped grooves on the brake disk frictional surfaces. Experiments with a brake test dynamometer have been carried out to compare the braking vibrations and noise of the grooved disks with that of the un-grooved disk. The experimental results demonstrate that disks with grooves significantly reduced braking vibrations and noise at both low and high frequencies, and as the initial braking temperature and braking pressure increased, the reduction effect is further enhanced. The investigation also shows the wear rates of both the grooved disks and brake pads are also significantly reduced. Thermo-mechanical coupled finite element models of the brake pads and disks with and without grooves are developed to investigate the mechanisms of the reduction of braking noise and vibrations by the introduction of grooves on the disk frictional surfaces. The numerical results show that the number of grooves plays an important role in reducing the interface surface temperatures, enhancing heat flux, reducing thermal deformation, changing the contact pressure distribution, and stabilizing the coefficients of friction of the braking sliding contacts. The thermal effects contribute to the wear reduction of both the braking disks and pads, and the reduction of braking noise and vibrations. In addition, both the finite element modal analysis and the experimental modal testing results show that surface grooves increase the modal damping ratio of the disks, which certainly plays a role on the reduction of braking noise and vibrations. This study has significance to the surface modification of brake disks in order to reduce braking noise and vibrations, as well as the wear resistance of brake disks and pads.

Bidirectional rapid sensing based on rare-earth upconversion nanoparticles for the ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide detection

The current detection methods for L-Ascorbic Acid (AA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) often face limitations in sensitivity, rapidity, and practical application. Addressing these challenges, this study introduces a bidirectional rapid sensing platform based on rare-earth upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for the detection of AA and H2O2. The developed probe, combining Tm-doped NaYF4 UCNPs with an iron chelate (SA-FeIII), leverages the inner filtration effect for efficient detection. By employing both fluorescence and colorimetric methods, the proposed system achieves linear detection ranges of 0-100 mu M for AA and 0-71.7 mu M for H2O2, with detection limits as low as 0.1 mu M and 0.45 mu M, respectively. Furthermore, a smartphone-based image analysis technique demonstrates the potential for rapid, on-site concentration measurements. This work significantly enhances the practicality of AA and H2O2 detection, offering a sensitive, fast, and user-friendly approach that holds promise for applications in clinical diagnostics, food safety, and agricultural stress monitoring.

Whole-genome de novo sequencing reveals genomic variants associated with differences of sex development in SRY negative pigs

BackgroundDifferences of sex development (DSD) are congenital conditions in which chromosomal, gonadal, or phenotypic sex is atypical. In more than 50% of human DSD cases, a molecular diagnosis is not available. In intensively farmed pig populations, the incidence of XX DSD pigs is relatively high, leading to economic losses for pig breeders. Interestingly, in the majority of 38, XX DSD pigs, gonads still develop into testis-like structures or ovotestes despite the absence of the testis-determining gene (SRY). However, the current understanding of the molecular background of XX DSD pigs remains limited. MethodsAnatomical and histological characteristics of XX DSD pigs were analysed using necropsy and HE staining. We employed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) with 10x Genomics technology and used de novo assembly methodology to study normal female and XX DSD pigs. Finally, the identified variants were validated in 32 XX DSD pigs, and the expression levels of the candidate variants in the gonads of XX DSD pigs were further examined. ResultsXX DSD pigs are characterised by the intersex reproductive organs and the absence of germ cells in the seminiferous tubules of the gonads. We identified 4,950 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from non-synonymous mutations in XX DSD pigs. Cohort validation results highlighted two specific SNPs, "c.218T > C" in the "Interferon-induced transmembrane protein 1 gene (IFITM1)" and "c.1043C > G" in the "Newborn ovary homeobox gene (NOBOX)", which were found exclusively in XX DSD pigs. Moreover, we verified 14 candidate structural variants (SVs) from 1,474 SVs, identifying a 70 bp deletion fragment in intron 5 of the WW domain-containing oxidoreductase gene (WWOX) in 62.5% of XX DSD pigs. The expression levels of these three candidate genes in the gonads of XX DSD pigs were significantly different from those of normal female pigs.
