Age-related cognitive decline presents a significant health challenge for older adults, with no specific medication available to counteract it. Early detection of cognitive decline is crucial for timely intervention and effective management. Sleep status plays a vital role in evaluating cognitive function, as disrupted sleep patterns are associated with cognitive decline and increased risk of neurodegenerative conditions. Existing methods for assessing sleep status, such as self-report questionnaires, actigraphy, and polysomnography, lack the ability to consistently monitor sleep status over a long period. In this paper we introduced SLEEPWISE, an AI-powered platform deployed in residential environments for continuous ambient sleep monitoring to assess the cognitive well-being of older adults. SLEEPWISE utilizes non-contact pads with highly sensitive piezoelectric sensors to monitor sleep parameters such as duration and efficiency, which are transmitted daily to the server. Moreover, we have also developed a gamified module for SLEEPWISE, allowing an objective assessment of daily cognitive functions. This module aids SLEEPWISE in establishing the correlation models between sleep and cognitive health. To evaluate the effectiveness of SLEEP-WISE, a pilot study was conducted with participants recruited from a local hospital. During the 30-days trials, SLEEPWISE identified a negative impact on congnitive performance associated with increased nocturnal body movements and getting out of bad. These findings emphasize the potential of SLEEPWISE as an early screening tool for evaluating daily cognitive health and well-being. © 2024 IEEE.

The composition of Archean granitoid rocks changed from predominantly tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) gneisses in the early Archean (4-3 Ga) to diversified granitoid rock assemblages in the late Archean (3.0-2.5 Ga), marking a crucial transformation in the geodynamic processes of early Earth. However, the reason for this major transition remains enigmatic because the petrogenetic features of different granitoid assemblages and their crust-mantle interactions during different periods are poorly understood. We use variations in the spatial-temporal distribution, lithological association, chemical composition, and petrogenesis of Neoarchean (2.7- 2.5 Ga) granitoids and inferred correlative crust-mantle interactions in the Eastern Liaoning Range (ELR) of the northeastern North China craton to explore this geodynamic transition. The early Neoarchean (ca. 2.7 Ga) ELR granitoids were dominated by TTG gneisses, and the late Neoarchean (2.6-2.5 Ga) ELR granitoid typology and compositions became more complex, changing into TTGs and more K 2 O-rich granitoid rocks. The TTGs can be subdivided into a high-Ca group and a low-Ca group: The 2.71-2.68 Ga high-Ca group TTG magma originated from partial melting of subducted juvenile oceanic crust, and the lowCa group TTG magma was derived from fractionation crystallization of the high-Ca group TTG magma. The chemical composition of the magmatic sources played a dominant role on the 2.60-2.50 Ga TTG magmatism: the high-Ca and low-Ca group TTG magmas came from low-K mafic rocks and tonalites, respectively. The 2.58-2.49 Ga K 2 O-rich granitoids can be divided into three petrogenetic series: (1) The high-CaMg group K 2 O-rich granitoid magma originated from partial melting of high-K mafic rocks, (2) the low-Ca-Mg group K 2 O-rich granitoid magma was derived from partial melting of sedimentary rocks, and (3) the transition group K 2 O-rich granitoid magma was sourced from metagreywackes. A High-Performance Polyimide Composite Membrane with Flexible Polyphosphazene Derivatives for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

A sulfonated polyimide, S-F-abSPI, with alkyl sulfonic acid side chains, and a polyphosphonitrile derivative, poly[4-methoxyphenoxy (4-fluorophenoxy) phosphazene] (PFMPP), were designed and synthesized. Composite modification of the S-F-abSPI membrane was carried out using PFMPP, resulting in the preparation of composite membranes with different composite ratios, which were then subjected to performance testing and characterization. Experimental results revealed a significant enhancement in the proton conductivity of the S-F-abSPI membrane, reaching 0.116 S cm-1, slightly higher than that of the N212 membrane. The S-F-abSPI/1% PFMPP composite membrane exhibited the optimal comprehensive performance, with a surface resistance as low as 0.54 Omega cm2, comparable to that of the N212 membrane. At a high current density of 200 mA cm-2 during charge-discharge, the composite membrane achieved a voltage efficiency (VE) of 83.12% and an energy efficiency (EE) of 81.95%. Cycling tests over 200 cycles demonstrated the composite membrane's excellent long-term cycling stability. The alkyl sulfonic acid side chains enhanced the proton conductivity of the membrane, while electrostatic potential distribution calculations indicated strong interactions between PFMPP and the base membrane, enhancing the membrane's mechanical strength, reducing vanadium ion permeability, and improving chemical stability and vanadium ion selectivity. This composite membrane holds promise for high-performance VRFB applications.

Near-Infrared Light-Responsive Nanofibrous Membranes for Treatment of Bacterial Wound Infections

Bacterial wound infections pose a significant challenge for both patients and healthcare providers. To effectively treat bacterial wound infections, it is critical to develop functional wound dressings that can eradicate bacteria and promote wound healing. Herein, we report a facile and eco-friendly route for preparing a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive bifunctional botanicals nanofibrous membrane as a wound dressing for the synergistic treatment of bacterial wound infections. The as-prepared nanofibrous membrane consisted of poly(vinyl alcohol) as a support matrix, tannic acid-Fe(III) nanoparticles as NIR laser-activated photothermal nanoagents, and berberine hydrochloride as the active botanicals. The bifunctional nanofibrous membrane exhibited high porosity, hydrophilicity, breathability, and biocompatibility, rendering it an optimal wound dressing. More importantly, the bifunctional nanofibrous membrane exhibited a synergistic sterilization performance under NIR laser irradiation to produce sufficient hyperthermia and on-demand release of botanicals. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the nanofibrous membrane could effectively kill bacteria in the early stages of infected wounds, promote collagen deposition, and accelerate wound healing. In summary, our bifunctional nanofibrous membrane presents immense potential for clinical applications in preventing bacterial infections and promoting skin repair.

Alcohol extracts of Chinese bayberry branch induce S-phase arrest and apoptosis in HepG2 cells

The alcohol extracts of Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra) branches (MRBE) are rich in flavonoids which have a variety of medicinal benefits, but their effects on human HepG2 were unknown. In this study, the effects of MRBE on HepG2 cell growth and its potential for inhibiting cancer were explored. The results displayed that MRBE inhibited HepG2 proliferation both by arresting cells in S phase and promoting apoptosis. Quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and immunofluorescence showed that MRBE induced S-phase arrest by upregulating p21, which in turn downregulated cyclin and cyclin-dependent kinase messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein. Apoptosis was induced by blocking the expression of BCL-2 and suppression of the Raf/ERK1 signaling pathways. These results indicated that MRBE may have the potential for treatment of human liver cancer, highlighting novel approaches for developing new pharmacological tools for the treatment of this deadly type cancer. Meanwhile, it provides a new direction for the medicinal added values of Chinese bayberry, which helped to broaden the diversified development of its industry chain.

Carbendazim (CBZ) and prochloraz (PCZ) are broad-spectrum fungicides used in agricultural peat control. Both fungicides leave large amounts of residues in fruits and are toxic to non-target organisms. However, the combined toxicity of the fungicides to non-target organisms is still unknown. Therefore, we characterized the toxic effects of dietary supplementation with CBZ, PCZ, and their combination for 90 days in 6-week-old male Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice. CBZ-H (100 mg/kg day), PCZ-H (10 mg/kg day), and their combination treatments increased the relative liver weights and caused liver injury. The serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), glucose (Glu), pyruvate (PYR), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were reduced, and synergistic toxicity was observed. Hepatic transcriptome revealed that 326 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of liver were observed in the CBZ treatment group, 149 DEGs in the PCZ treatment group, and 272 DEGs in the combination treatment group. According to KEGG enrichment analysis, the fungicides and their combination affected lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and ferroptosis. In addition, the relative mRNA levels of key genes involved in lipid metabolism were also examined. Compared with individual exposure, combined exposure to CBZ and PCZ caused a more obvious decrease in the expression of some genes related to glycolipid metabolism. Furthermore, the relative mRNA levels of some key genes in the combination treatment group were lower than those in the CBZ and PCZ treated groups. In summary, CBZ, PCZ, and their combination generally caused hepatotoxicity and glycolipid metabolism disorders, which could provide new insights for investigating the combined toxicity of multiple fungicides to animals.

A Novel Sulfonated Polyimide Composite Membrane Containing a Sulfonated Porous Material for All-Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

To improve the battery efficiency and cycling stability of sulfonated polyimide (SPI), a polyphosphazene with built-in -SO3H moieties (PP-SO3H), which is a porous covalent organic framework (COF) material, is facilely synthesized by the polymeric combination of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and p-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid. Due to its tunable pore size and flexible molecular design, the COF material can address the trade-off between the conductivity and the ion permeability of ion exchange membranes well, thereby improving the ion selectivity of membranes. The experimental results show that the SPI/PP-SO3H composite membrane has an excellent conductivity (up to 114.8 mS cm-1);the ion selectivity of the SPI/2% PP-SO3H membrane is 11.69 x 104 S min cm-3, which is 2.18 times higher than that of the SPI base membrane. PP-SO3H also improves the SPI membrane's mechanical strength, and the effect of PP-SO3H on SPI intermolecular interactions is analyzed by surface electrostatic potential (ESP) theoretical calculations. The Coulombic efficiency (CE) of the SPI/2% PP-SO3H membrane is 98.92%, the energy efficiency (EE) is 84.1% at a current density of 100 mA cm-2, and the self-discharge time of the SPI/2% PP-SO3H membrane is 3.5 times compared with the SPI base membrane. To measure the cycling stability of the composite membrane, the SPI/2% PP-SO3H membrane is cycled in the VRFB for more than 400 cycles, which is more stable than that of the SPI base membrane. These results show that SPI/2% PP-SO3H composite membranes are viable for VRFB applications.

Visual Question Answering (VQA) aims to obtain answers through image-question pairs. Nowadays, the VQA model tends to get answers only through questions, ignoring the information in the images. This phenomenon is caused by bias. As indicated by previous studies, the bias in VQA mainly comes from text modality. Our analysis of bias suggests that the question type is a crucial factor in bias formation. To interrupt the shortcut from question type to answer for de-biasing, we propose a self-supervised method for Shuffling Question Types (SQT) to reduce bias from text modality, which overcomes the prior language problem by mitigating the question-to-answer bias without introducing external annotations. Moreover, we propose a new objective function for negative samples. Experimental results show that our approach can achieve 61.76% accuracy on the VQA-CP v2 dataset, which outperforms the state-of-the-art in both self-supervised and supervised methods.

In silico-guided metabolic engineering of Bacillus subtilis for efficient biosynthesis of purine nucleosides by blocking the key backflow nodes

Background Purine nucleosides play essential roles in cellular physiological processes and have a wide range of applications in the fields of antitumor/antiviral drugs and food. However, microbial overproduction of purine nucleosides by de novo metabolic engineering remains a great challenge due to their strict and complex regulatory machinery involved in biosynthetic pathways. Results In this study, we designed an in silico-guided strategy for overproducing purine nucleosides based on a genome-scale metabolic network model in Bacillus subtilis. The metabolic flux was analyzed to predict two key backflow nodes, Drm (purine nucleotides toward PPP) and YwjH (PPP-EMP), to resolve the competitive relationship between biomass and purine nucleotide synthesis. In terms of the purine synthesis pathway, the first backflow node Drm was inactivated to block the degradation of purine nucleotides, which greatly increased the inosine production to 13.98-14.47 g/L without affecting cell growth. Furthermore, releasing feedback inhibition of the purine operon by promoter replacement enhanced the accumulation of purine nucleotides. In terms of the central carbon metabolic pathways, the deletion of the second backflow node YwjH and overexpression of Zwf were combined to increase inosine production to 22.01 +/- 1.18 g/L by enhancing the metabolic flow of PPP. By switching on the flux node of the glucose-6-phosphate to PPP or EMP, the final inosine engineered strain produced up to 25.81 +/- 1.23 g/L inosine by a pgi-based metabolic switch with a yield of 0.126 mol/mol glucose, a productivity of 0.358 g/L/h and a synthesis rate of 0.088 mmol/gDW/h, representing the highest yield in de novo engineered inosine bacteria.
