Cretaceous Evolution of the Northeastern Asian Continent: Insights From the Pikou Strike-Slip Fault Zone of the Liaodong Peninsula, NE China

Clarifying the Cretaceous evolution of the NE Asian continent has always been a key issue in unraveling the intracontinental responses of overriding plate to the subduction of Paleo-Pacific plate during the past decades. However, the structural details and precise timing of the transition from the Early Cretaceous extension to the Late Cretaceous shortening are still poorly constrained. Here we present structural and geochronological data about the Pikou strike-slip fault zone of the southern Liaodong Peninsula, where the Liaonan-Wanfu metamorphic core complex (MCC) is well exposed, to decipher this vital tectonic transition. Field observations and structural analysis show that the Pikou strike-slip fault zone is a sinistral transpressional fault zone that reworked the Liaonan-Wanfu MCC. Inversion of fault-slip data indicates that the brittle sinistral faulting was a result of NW-SE compression. Geochronological constraints suggest that the Pikou strike-slip fault zone was initiated as the high-angle brittle normal faults at ca. 102 Ma, and then transformed into a sinistral transpressional fault zone in the early Late Cretaceous. Our new data, together with the regional multidisciplinary data, further confirm that the tectonic transition occurred at ca. 87 Ma. Thereby the Cretaceous evolution of the NE Asian continent since 135 Ma can be modified as the significant NW-SE extension of 135-102 Ma, the gradually weakening extension of 102-87 Ma and the NW-SE compression of 87-79 Ma. Their geodynamics were controlled by the alternating slab rollback and low-angle subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate.

Caffeic acid protects against Aβ toxicity and prolongs lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans models

Caffeic acid (CA), a derivative of cinnamic acid, exists in various vegetables and fruits. Natural compounds as beneficial antioxidants play an important role in the research of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we evaluated the effects of CA against AD using the C. elegans models of AD. We found that CA significantly alleviated A beta-induced toxicity, increased lifespan, decreased body paralysis, and improved reproductive defects. Also, CA treatment increased resistance to heat and oxidative stress in N2 and CL4176. Moreover, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and polyglutamine (polyQ40) aggregate formation were reduced. Furthermore, the mechanistic studies revealed that CA activated transcription factor DAF-16 and its downstream targets SOD-3 and GST-4 to protect against A beta toxicity. Also, the heat shock proteins hsf-1 and hsp-16.2 mRNA were up-regulated in CL4176. Moreover, CA activated the mRNA expression of lgg-1. Lastly, the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) analysis of RNA-seq data revealed that there was a significant change in the metabolism-related pathways. Overall, these results suggested an underlying mechanism of action of CA in treating AD at an organism level.

Direct Detection of Pulmonary Fibrosis by Near-Infrared-Responsive Biomimetic Platelets

Background: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a fatal lung disease and affects over 5 million patients worldwide. Precise and early detection of PF is of pivotal importance to slow the disease progression. However, there are currently no effective tools to detect PF directly. Purpose: This study aimed to develop an imaging modality to detect PF directly. Excessive collagen deposition is the hallmark of PF. Herein, we developed a novel PF diagnostic agent, namely PVD (platelets-derived nanovesicles labeled with dye), by utilizing near-infrared (NIR)-responsive biomimetic platelets that specifically recognize collagen. Methods: In brief, platelets membrane was extracted from purified platelets by freeze/thaw and formed to PVD nanovesicles via sonication and extrusion, when loaded with DiR dye. Red blood cells membrane loaded with DiR was prepared in the same way as PVD to form RVD as control. Collagen self-assembled on microplates was used as an in vitro collagen fibrils model and monocrotaline-induced rats were used as an in vivo PF model. Results: We demonstrated that PVD, but not RVD nor other controls, could bind collagen both in vitro and in vivo, and directly detect pulmonary fibrosis in vivo and ex vivo at the early PF stage. Conclusion: Collectively, PVD is a versatile NIR-responsive probe for the direct visualization of collagen, and can be particularly helpful in direct detecting PF. To the best of our knowledge, PVD is the first report of a NIR probe for the direct detection of pulmonary fibrosis.

Background and PurposeDoxorubicin is widely used in the treatment of malignant tumours, but doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity severely limits its clinical application. Spexin is a neuropeptide that acts as a novel biomarker in cardiovascular disease. However, the effects of spexin on doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity is *** ApproachWe established a model of doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity both in vivo and in vitro. Levels of cardiac damage in mice was assessed through cardiac function assessment, determination of serum cardiac troponin T and CKMB levels and histological examination. CCK8 and PI staining were used to assess the doxorubicin-induced toxicity in cultures of cardiomyocytes in vitro. Ferroptosis was assessed using FerroOrange staining, determination of MDA and 4-HNE content and ferroptosis-associated proteins SLC7A11 and GPX4. Mitochondrial membrane potential and lipid peroxidation levels were measured using TMRE and C11-BODIPY 581/591 probes, respectively. Myocardial autophagy was assessed by expression of P62 and *** ResultsSpexin treatment improved heart function of mice with doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, and attenuated doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity by decreasing iron accumulation, abnormal lipid metabolism and inhibiting ferroptosis. Interestingly, doxorubicin caused excessive autophagy in cardiomyocyte in culture, which could be alleviated by treatment with spexin. Knockdown of Beclin 1 eliminated the protective effects of spexin in mice with *** and ImplicationsSpexin ameliorated doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity by inhibiting excessive autophagy-induced ferroptosis, suggesting that spexin could be a drug candidate against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Slower than expected reduction in annual PM2.5 in Xi'an revealed by machine learning-based meteorological normalization

To evaluate the effectiveness of air pollution control policies, trend analysis of the air pollutants is often performed. However, trend analysis of air pollutants over multiple years is complicated by the fact that changes in meteorology over time can also affect the levels of air pollutants in addition to changes in emissions or atmospheric chemistry. To decouple the meteorological effect, this study performed a trend analysis of the hourly fine particulate matter (PM2.5) observed at an urban background site in Xi'an city over 5 years from 2015 to 2019 using the machine learning algorithm. As a novel way of meteorological normalization, the meteorological parameters were used as constant input for 5 consecutive years. In this way, the impact of meteorological parameters was excluded, providing insights into the real changes in PM2.5 due to changes in emission strength or atmospheric chemistry. After meteorological normalization, a decreasing trend of -3.3 % year(-1) (-1.9 mu g m(-3) year(-1)) in PM2.5 was seen, instead of -4.4 % year(-1) from direct PM2.5 observation. Assuming the rate of -1.9 mu g m(-3) year(-1) were kept constant for the next few decades in Xi'an, it would take approximately 25 years (in the year 2045) to reduce the annual PM2.5 level to 5 mu g m(-3), the new guideline value from World Health Organization. We also show that PM2.5 is primarily associated with anthropogenic emissions, which, underwent aqueous phase chemistry in winter and photochemical oxidation in summer as suggested by partial dependence of RH and O-x in different seasons. Therefore, reducing the anthropogenic secondary aerosol precursors at a higher rate, such as NOx and VOCs is expected to reduce the particulate pollution in this region more effectively than the current -3.3 % year(-1) found in this study.

This paper mainly uses data mining and statistical analysis to mine network data and survey data, and studies the transformation and development of K9 education and training institutions under the double reduction policy of Xuzhou City. First, we analyzed the user groups of education and training institutions through text mining and other network big data technologies. The results show that: users pay more attention to family education and strengthen quality education; Then, based on the analysis of the questionnaire data, the results show that the research age, parents' wishes, environmental impact, strength of education and training institutions, and expected demand have a significant impact on whether user groups choose education and training institutions. Finally, it proposes that education and training institutions should transform to camp education, arts and sports education, science education and other quality education.

Polysaccharide from walnut green husk alleviates liver inflammation and gluconeogenesis dysfunction by altering gut microbiota in ochratoxin A-induced mice

Walnut green husk polysaccharides (WGP) are isolated from the walnut green husk with a mean molecular weight of 12.77 kDa. The structural characterization revealed by methylation and NMR analysis indicated that WGP might consist of -> 4-alpha-D-Galp-(1 ->, alpha-D-Galp (1 ->, and -> 2)-alpha-L-Rhap-(1 ->. Previous studies have been demonstrated that WGP effectively prevented liver injury and modulated gut microbiota in high fructose-treated mice and high fat diet-treated rats. In this study, we found for the first time that WGP presenting outstanding protective effects on liver inflammation and gluconeogenesis dysfunction induced by ochratoxin A (OTA) in mice. Firstly, WGP decreased oxidative stress, down-regulated the expression of inflammatory factors and inhibited the TLR4/p65/I kappa B alpha pathway in the liver. Then, WGP reversed OTA-induced lower phosphoenolpyruvate carboxyl kinase (PEPCK), and glucose 6-phosphatase (G6PC) activities in the liver. Furthermore, WGP increased the diversity of gut microbiota and the abundance of beneficial bacteria, especially Lactobacillus and Akkermansia. Importantly, the results of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment further confirmed that gut microbiota involved in the protective effects of WGP on liver damage induced by OTA. Our results indicated that the protective effect of WGP on liver inflammation and gluconeogenesis dysfunction caused by OTA may be due to the regulation of gut microbiota.

Enzymatic browning occurs rapidly in fresh-cut apples and can lead to economic losses. Although various methods have been developed to prevent this browning, physical methods are costly, and chemical methods are controversial, suggesting the potential usefulness of an endogenous natural browning inhibitor. In this study, the effects of ursolic acid (UA), a natural endogenous compound, on apple browning were investigated. It was found that UA inhibited the activity of polyphenol oxidase through Cu2+ chelation. Molecular docking indicated that the inhibition was reversible and mixed-type. Moreover, UA treatment promoted the scavenging of reactive oxygen species in fresh-cut apple and reduced the proliferation of microorganisms on the apple surface. Similar effects were observed on the browning of chestnut, eggplant, potatoes, and pears. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate the efficacy of UA on inhibiting browning in fresh-cut apple, together with an analysis of the mechanism involved.

A lactoferrin-derived peptide LFDP1 alleviates experimental NEC via blocking ACSL4-LPCAT3 axis

This study investigated the anti-necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) effects of LFDP1, a lactoferrin-derived peptide previously identified as up-regulated in human milk from mothers of preterm infants. Using both in vivo and in vitro models, we evaluated LFDP1's potential to attenuate NEC development. In NEC rat pups, LFDP1 administration significantly reduced the severity of clinical symptoms and pathological features. At the cellular level, LFDP1 restored viability and enhanced migration and proliferation of IEC6 and FHC cells. Molecular analysis revealed that LFDP1 downregulated key NEC process indicators (TLR4, ACSL4, and LPCAT3) while upregulating protective factors (ZO-1 and GPX4). RNA sequencing of LFDP1-treated FHC cells identified 117 differentially expressed mRNAs, with pathway analysis highlighting the involvement of polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and fatty acid metabolism. Further investigation showed that LFDP1 suppressed ferroptosis by inhibiting the ACSL4-LPCAT3 signaling axis, a finding corroborated in human NEC intestinal samples. Notably, LFDP1 treatment reduced oxidative stress and modulated the expression of ferroptosis-related proteins in vitro. These findings suggest that LFDP1 alleviates experimental NEC by repressing polyunsaturated fatty acid production and inhibiting ferroptosis via the ACSL4-LPCAT3 pathway. Our study not only elucidates a potential mechanism for LFDP1's protective effects but also contributes to the broader understanding of how breast milk composition may protect newborns from diseases like NEC. © 2025 The Authors

Effect of conservation tillage on seedling emergence and crop growth-evidences from UAV observations

Over the past decades, intensive reclamation has caused significant land degradation, threatening both ecological and food security. The Chinese government has taken a series of novel Conservation Tillage (CT) measures according to regional climate and soil conditions to increase agriculture's multifunctional and resilience. Previous studies have reported CT in northeast China can improve soil organic carbon and reduce ammonia emissions in northeast China. However, whether the regionally adapted CT can avoid its inherent limitations in seed emergence and crop growth is still lacking comprehensive understanding and investigation. By using high-resolution and time-series Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) observations, our study investigated and evaluated the performance of different advanced and regional adapted CT treatments in crop emergence and growth compared with conventional tillage during the whole growing season. Based on the field measurements, we found that although the residues can impact the seed emergence, there was no significant difference between CT treatments and conventional tillage, with some CT treatments can even raise the emergence rate. We also found that the high residues covered CT treatments obstructed the maize grown in the early growing season including the V3 and V6 period, while the crop growth in these treatments caught up with the conventional tillage in the following growing periods. Our study suggested that well-adjusted CT treatments in Northeast China have the potential to maintain crop production accompanied by enhancing the ecosystem's multifunctionality. The results from this study provided observational evidence of crop growth impact from CT, which will have great implications in convincing the farmers and beneficial to the promotion of conservation tillage.
