Taenia laticollis and a potentially novel Taenia species from the Eurasian lynx (Lynx) in Northwestern China

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx) is a medium-sized wild cat species distributed throughout Eurasia. There has been no report on Taenia species (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) infecting this felid in China. In this study, 24 tapeworms were found in two Eurasian lynxes (#1 and #2) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), northwestern China. Based on the number, measurements and the shape of rostellar hooks, these tapeworms belong to two Taenia species. According to the number (n = 32) and length (185-194 mu m) of small hooks, the first Taenia species (n = 1, found in #2 lynx) was identified as Taenia laticollis. Phylogenetically, this species was clustered with T. laticollis genotype C (JX860623) based on its cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and 16S rDNA sequences. The second Taenia species (n = 23, provisionally named as "Taenia sp.") may represent a potentially novel tapeworm species, because of its obvious differences in the shape and lengths (174-182 mu m, 98-113 mu m) of large and small rostellar hooks in comparison with ten taxonomically related species. Molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the cox1 gene revealed that "Taenia sp." has the highest rate of sequence identity (92.93%, 368/396 bp) with Taenia hydatigena reported from sheep (Ovis aries) in Slovakia. To sum up, a potentially novel tapeworm species, "Taenia sp.", is found in Eurasian lynx. In addition, T. laticollis was found for the first time in China.

Triple-Phase Interface Engineering over an In2O3 Electrode to Boost Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 is deemed to be a promising method to ease environmental and energy issues. However, achieving high efficiency and selectivity of CO2 electroreduction remains a bottleneck due to huge limitation of CO2 mass transfer and competition of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous solution. In this work, we propose to utilize triple-phase interface engineering over an In2O3 electrode to enhance its CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance. Notably, distinguishing from other research studies (doping, defect introduction, and heterojunction construction) that regulate the nature of In2O3-based catalysts themselves, we herein tune interfacial wettability of In2O3 using facile fluoropolymer coating for the first time. In contrast to the hydrophilic In2O3 electrode [Faraday efficiency (FE)(HCOOH) similar to 62.7% and FEH2 similar to 24.1% at -0.67 V versus RHE], the hydrophobic fluoropolymer (taking polyvinylidene fluoride as an example)-coated In2O3 electrode delivers a significantly enhanced FEHCOOH of 82.3% and a decreased FEH2 of 5.7% at the same potential. Upon combining contact angle measurements, density functional theory calculation, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, the enhanced CO2RR performance is revealed to be attributed to the rich triple-phase interfaces formed after fluoropolymer coating as an "aerophilic sponge", which increases the local concentration of CO2 near In2O3 active sites to improve CO2 reduction and meanwhile reduces the accessible water molecules to suppress competitive HER. This work presents a feasible approach for the enhanced selectivity of HCOOH yield over In2O3 by triple-phase interface engineering, which also provides a convenient and effective method for developing other materials used in gas-consumption reactions.

Background Rodents play an important role in the life cycle of ixodid and argasid ticks, particularly as hosts of larvae and nymphs. The great gerbil (Rhombomys opimus), the preferred prey item of several carnivores (e.g. the red fox and marbled polecat), is the dominant rodent species in the Gurbantunggut Desert in northwestern China. The aim of this study was to investigate tick species associated with different hosts in the habitat of great gerbils, including wildlife and livestock. Methods During 2018-2023, ticks were removed from 326 great gerbils, two red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), three marbled polecats (Vormela peregusna), 35 pastured sheep (Ovis aries), and one long-eared desert hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus) in the Gurbantunggut Desert. Ticks were identified according to standard morphological keys. Then, they were further analyzed by molecular and phylogenic methods based on two mitochondrial markers, 16S rDNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes. Results A total of 889 ticks were collected, representing five species. These included Hyalomma asiaticum (n = 425: 24 larvae, 79 nymphs and 322 adults), Rhipicephalus turanicus (n = 153: 2 nymphs and 151 adults), Haemaphysalis erinacei (n = 298: 4 larvae, 7 nymphs and 287 adults), Ixodes acuminatus (n = 7: 4 nymphs and 3 adults) and Ornithodoros tartakovskyi (6 adults). Based on COI sequences, molecular and phylogenetic analyses showed that (i) I. acuminatus from great gerbils and marbled polecats clustered with I. acuminatus reported from Europe;(ii) O. tartakovskyi found in northwestern China belonged to an independent clade;(iii) Hy. asiaticum, R. turanicus and Ha. erinacei had 100% sequence identities to conspecific ticks sampled previously in China. Conclusions The great gerbil is an important host for the developmental stages of I. acuminatus, O. tartakovskyi, Ha. erinacei, Hy. asiaticum and R. turanicus, thus supporting the life cycle of several tick species which, as adults, parasitize predators (

DETECTING LORENTZ INVARIANCE VIOLATIONS IN THE 10^-20 RANGE

In recent years the possibility has been raised of Lorentz invariance violations arising from physics beyond the Standard Model. Some of these effects manifest themselves as small anisotropies in the velocity of light, c. By comparing the resonant frequencies of cavity modes with different spatial alignments, limits on the order delta c/c < 10(-15) have been set and some further improvement can be expected. However, the largest Lorentz violations originating at the Planck scale are expected to manifest themselves as a fractional frequency variation at the 10(-17) level in the absence of suppression factors. Space experiments have been proposed to approach the 10(-18) level. Here we explore the possibilities for pushing further and show that it is possible in principle to reach well into the 10(-20) range with existing technology. This could be done in a very quiet cryogenic environment, such as the drag-free orbiter being developed for the Satellite Test of the Equivalence Principle (STEP).

Fast Hardware Architecture With Efficient Matrix Computations for the Key Generation of Classic McEliece

Classic McEliece, with a remarkably stable security level, has been selected as one of the four key-establishment algorithms in the fourth-round evaluation of the post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standardization process of national institute of standards and technology (NIST). However, its memory-intensive and time-consuming key generation poses an obstacle to widespread use. In this paper, we propose a fast hardware implementation of the key generation incorporating several architectural optimizations. For the Gaussian elimination, we optimize the scheduling of computing resources and the memory access process and present a high-performance and flexible systemizer with multiple low fan-out systolic arrays. Besides, an algorithmic-level parallelized design for entry generation and Gaussian elimination is proposed to reduce the redundant computation time. A compact entry generator with a multi-level feedback mechanism and a 2-D high-speed FFT module facilitates continuous streaming the generated entries into the *** implementation results show that our designs for the key generation improve time-area efficiency by 11.9% to 43.2% compared to the state-of-the-arts. Moreover, compared to the hardware implementations for the key generation of the other two quasi-cyclic code-based PQC algorithms, ours for Classic McEliece based on the random code achieves close to or better results in several metrics.

Background Ticks are blood-feeding significant arthropods that can harbour various microorganisms, including pathogens that pose health risks to humans and animals. Tick-symbiont microorganisms are believed to influence tick development, but the intricate interactions between these microbes and the relationships between different tick-borne microorganisms remain largely *** Based on 111 tick pool samples presenting questing and engorged statuses including 752 questing tick and 1083 engorged tick from cattle and goats, which were collected in two types of geographic landscape (semi-desert and alpine meadow). We observed significant variations in the composition of tick-borne microorganisms across different environments and blood-engorgement statuses, with a pronounced divergence in symbionts compared to environmental bacteria. Metabolic predictions revealed over 90 differential pathways for tick-borne microorganisms in distinct environments and more than 80 metabolic variations in response to varying blood engorgement statuses. Interestingly, nine pathways were identified, particularly related to chorismate synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. Moreover, microbial network relationships within tick-borne microorganism groups were highly distinct across different environments and blood-engorgement statuses. The microbial network relationships of symbionts involve some pathogenic and environmental microorganisms. Regression modelling highlighted positive correlations between the Coxiella symbiont and related pathogens, while some environmental bacteria showed strong negative correlations with Coxiella abundance. We also identified commensal bacteria/pathogens in bacterial cooccurrence patterns. Furthermore, we tested pathogenic microorganisms of each tick sample analysis revealed that 86.36% (1601/1855) of the tick samples carried one or more pathogenic microorganisms, The total carrier rate of bacterial pathogens was 43.77% ((812/1855). High frequency radar and its application to fresh water

High frequency (HF) radar has become an important tool for remotely mapping the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of waves and currents of the nearshore coastal ocean. Its acceptance along ocean coasts has resulted in the development of several commercially available systems and a planned nationwide coastal network to routinely measure coastal currents. Because HF radiation is known to propagate less efficiently over fresh water than seawater, it has been largely overlooked as a viable tool for freshwater application. However, its potential utility in freshwater was clearly demonstrated by a deployment along Lake Michigan as part of the 1999-2001 Episodic Events Great Lakes Experiment. As part of this experiment, the University of Michigan Multi-frequency Coastal Radar consistently produced reliable near surface current measurements to a range of approximately 25 km offshore showing strong correlation with both in-situ measurements and numerical hind-casts. This paper provides background on HF radar technology, a summary of the current state of the art with respect to freshwater and describes the results of a recent experiment to measure the propagation of HF radar signal over freshwater using CODAR Ocean Sensors SeaSondes, operating at 5 and 42 MHz with 21 W and 90 W average radiated powers, respectively. The effective offshore range for these radars was found to be 18 km at 5 MHz and 4-5 km at 42 MHz. These findings are consistent with currently available models for the prediction of propagation loss, verifying that they can reliably be used to estimate ranges in freshwater settings. Enhanced electrocatalytic performance of La modulated PtCo nanobunches for methanol electro-oxidation

In this study, we fabricated La modulated PtCo bimetallic networked nanobunches (La-PtCo NBs) consist of parallel aligned ultrathin nanowires approximately 2 nm in size through a convenient one-pot solvothermal method. The modification of trace La induced the formation of defect-rich surfaces and optimized the surface electronic configuration of Pt. It makes that more hydroxide is adsorbed on the electrode surface to form La-OH, which enable facilitate the breaking of the C-O bond and decreased CO adsorption at the Pt site. Moreover, 1D configuration can efficiently accelerate rapid electron diffusion and expose more utilizable active sites, thus achieving highly active electrodes for catalyzing methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). As expected, the La-PtCo NBs exhibit the superior mass activity of 1073.08/728.69 mA center dot mgPt-1 and specific activity of 144.60/ 98.19 mA center dot cm-2, which indicate improvements of 4.19 and 3.28 times relative to commercial Pt/C in acid and alkaline conditions. Besides, the mass activity loss of La-PtCo NBs is 83.60 % and 48.35 %, much lower than those of PtCo (88.75 % and 67.84 %) and commercial Pt/C (97.12 % and 72.38 %) after successive 10 000 s tests in acid and alkaline media, respectively. This work indicates a strategic design for remarkable improvements of efficient Pt based alloy electrocatalysts in fuel cell applications.

In this paper, the B4C@SiO2 core-shell structure was prepared by the 'sol-gel' method. It is combined with few layers black phosphrous (FLBP) of different sizes obtained by ball milling to prepare B4C@SiO2/BP composite. The effects of black phosphorus (BP) sizes, sintering temperatures, times, pressures and transient liquid phase types on the dry tribological properties of B4C@SiO2/BP composites were studied in a ball-on-disc contact form. The results indicated that as the size of BP decreased, the friction coefficient of the B4C@SiO2/BP composite gradually increased while the wear rate decreased and tended to the tribological properties of the B4C@SiO2 composite. In addition, when the added amount of BP exceeded the threshold, it would lead to deterioration of tribological properties.
