Effects of high hydraulic pressure on the short-term retrogradation and digestive properties of Lonicern caerulea berry polyphenol-chestnut starch complexes

Both fresh and processed Chinese chestnuts are susceptible to retrograde hardening, affecting their texture, flavor, and shelf life because of their high starch content. To reduce the short-term retrogradation of chestnut starch during the food processing of chestnut-based products, a complex of Lonicern caerulea berry polyphenols (LCBP) and chestnut starch (CS) was prepared using high hydraulic pressure (HHP). The results showed that LCBP reduced the water separation rate, hardness, elasticity, and short-range order of retrograde CS under HHP and improved light transmission. After aging for 1 day, the relative crystallinity of 600 MPa-8 % LCBP-CS was significantly reduced by 53.1 % compared with CS (p < 0.05), and its particle size distribution was more uniform, with a complexation rate of 63.9 %. Under the same pressure, the complex with 8 % LCBP showed a more significant short-term retrograde inhibitory effect. In addition, the resistant starch content of 600 MPa-8 % LCBPCS was 61 %. Correlation analysis showed that the complexation rates of LCBP and CS positively correlated with short-term retrogradation and digestive resistance. In summary, HHP facilitates the formation of a LCBP-CS complex that inhibits short-term retrogradation and enhances digestive resistance, aiding in the development of hypoglycemic chestnut products with extended shelf lives.

Risk Prediction Models for Stress Urinary Incontinence in Pregnant and Postpartum Women: A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal

BackgroundMany studies have developed or validated prediction models to estimate the risk of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in pregnant and postpartum women, but the quality of the model development and model applicability remains *** systematically review and critically evaluate currently available prediction models for SUI in pregnant and postpartum *** StrategyCochrane Library, EBSCO, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Chinese CNKI, Wanfang and VIP databases were searched from inception until February *** CriteriaProspective cohort or retrospective studies were considered eligible if they developed or validated prediction models for SUI in pregnant or postpartum *** Collection and AnalysisTwo reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data and evaluated the quality of the included studies using *** ResultsA total of 15 models were included. Eleven models were internally validated, including cross-validation and bootstrap and four models were externally validated. The most commonly used predictors were age, body mass index (BMI) and mode of delivery. The area under the curve or C-statistics reported by the modelling and validation groups ranged from 0.602 to 0.888. Only one study had a low risk of bias and 14 studies had a high risk of *** models for predicting SUI in pregnant and postpartum women had a high risk of bias according to the PROBAST. Future research should focus on improving the methodological quality of the existing prediction models and developing new models.

Tunable circularly polarized electroluminescence behaviors from chiral co-assembled conjugated liquid crystal polymers

Chiral co-assembly strategy has proven effective in increasing the dissymmetry factor (g(EL)) of the emitting layers (EMLs) in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the molecular structures that facilitate chiral co-assembly for further amplification of circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP-EL) signals. In this study, three types of achiral conjugated liquid crystal (LC) polymers (PFPh, PFNa and PFPy) and chiral binaphthyl-based polymer inducers (R/S-FO) were synthesized to construct corresponding chiral co-assemblies (R/S-FO)(0.1)-(PFPh/Na/Py)(0.9) as EMLs for CP-OLEDs through strong intermolecular pi-pi stacking interactions. Interestingly, these resulting chiral co-assembled EMLs exhibited tunable CP-EL behaviors caused by the different conjugation linkers of LC polymers. Among them, the deep blue devices based on (R/S-FO)(0.1)-(PFNa)(0.9) emitted the strongest CP-EL signals (|g(EL)| = 0.014, L-max = 3039 cd m(-2), CEmax = 1.16 cd A(-1)). It is attributed to the formation of ordered helical nanofibers facilitated by the excellent intermolecular compatibility due to the same naphthyl moieties in PFNa and R/S-FO. This study provides novel perspectives for developing high-performance CP-EL materials in chiral co-assembly systems.

Forty-five tick species have been recorded in Kazakhstan. However, their genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships, particularly when compared to ticks in neighbouring countries, remain unclear. In the present study, 148 mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence data from our laboratory and NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information;https://***/) data were used to address this knowledge gap. Phylogenetic analyses showed that i) Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum (Koch, 1844) ticks from Jambyl Oblast (southeastern Kazakhstan) and Gansu Province (northwestern China) constituted a newly deviated clade;and ii) Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1974) ticks from South Kazakhstan Oblast were closer to those in Romania and Turkey. The network diagram of haplotypes showed that i) the H-1 and H-2 haplotypes of Dermacentor marginatus (Sulzer, 1776) ticks from Zhetisu and Almaty were all newly evolved;and ii) the H-3 haplotypes of Haemaphysalis erinacei (Pavesi, 1884) from Almaty Oblast and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (northwestern China) were evolved from the H-1 haplotype from Italy. In the future, more COI data from different tick species, especially from Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries, should be employed in the field of tick DNA barcoding.

Geometric supermolecules constructed by multi-ended acidic extractants and their coupling effect on the separation of lanthanides

Polynuclear supermolecules characterized by geometric structures exhibit distinct selective behavior for Ln3+ during the assembly process, in contrast to mononuclear complexes, for the sake of coupling effect. While most studies about geometric supermolecules predominantly center on their assembly behaviors, overlooking their role in lanthanide separation. In this study, we bridge the gap between the behavioral study of geometric supermolecules and their application in separation processes by integrating these structures into the realm of solvent extraction. We report four cases of Multi-ended Extractants (MEs) and a case of Single-ended Extractant (SE1) serving as a control group. All these extractants are classified as acidic extractants. As designed, SE1 forms a mononuclear complex with Ln3+, whereas MEs assemble into geometric supermolecules with Ln3+. In the case of mononuclear complexes, Ln3+ ions are not coupled. While in geometric supermolecules, Ln3+ ions are interconnected through MEs, resulting in coupling between Ln3+ ions. Although MEs bear the same coordination motif as SE1, coupling effect of geometric supermolecules weakens the separation efficiency towards light lanthanide ion pairs in comparison to corresponding mononuclear complex. These results deepen our comprehension of coupling effect of geometric supermolecules on separation and provide a foundation for subsequent studies on the impacts of such couplings on separation performance.

Study on the Temperature and Salt Resistance of Novel Surfactants for Enhanced Oil Recovery

In recent years, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, such as surfactant flooding and polymer flooding, have demonstrated significant success in improving oil recovery rates in conventional reservoirs, achieving objectives like water control, increased oil production, and cost-effectiveness. However, high-temperature and high-salinity conditions in deep and ultra-deep reservoirs present substantial challenges to conventional EOR systems. Consequently, research on temperature- and salt-resistant EOR systems is critical for enhancing recovery in these challenging environments. This paper reviews the progress in the development of temperature- and saltresistant EOR systems both domestically and internationally. By discussing the structure and properties of four key EOR systems, we analyze their mechanisms of action and effectiveness in enhancing oil recovery. The study reveals that the selected surfactant systems exhibit excellent temperature resistance, withstanding temperatures of up to 140-160 degrees C, making them suitable for high-temperature reservoirs. Additionally, these surfactant systems show strong resistance to both monovalent and divalent salts, withstanding Na+ concentrations of 15,000-50,000 mg/L and Ca2+ concentrations of 1,500-4,500 mg/L, which makes them effective for use in highly saline reservoirs.

Organism-like formation of Schistosoma hemozoin and its function suggest a mechanism for anti-malarial action of artemisinin

The current theories of antimalarial mechanism of artemisinin are inadequate to fully explain the observed effects. In our study, "organism-like" formation of Schistosoma hemozoin granules by attaching to and utilizing erythrocytes to form new ones was observed. This indicates that heme iron is transferred from erythrocytes to hemozoin granules during their formation. However, as a disposal product of heme detoxification, these granules are not completely expelled from the Schistosoma gut, but decomposed again between microvilli in the posterior portion of the gut to transfer iron to eggs. Based on the function of iron transport supported by our observation of the unique process of Schistosoma hemozoin formation, here we propose a new viewpoint of antimalarial mechanism of artemisinin, which emphasizes the final outcome, i.e., interference of iron utilization in parasites by artemisinin, instead of focusing on the mode of interaction between artemisinin and heme or hemozoin. This suggests that artemisinin and its endoperoxides derivatives likely hit the Achilles' heel of hemozoin-producing and iron-dependent organisms.

The spectrum of α- and β-thalassemia mutations of the Li people in Hainan Province of China

This study examines the frequency and spectrum of alpha- and beta-thalassemia (thal) mutations of the Li people in Hainan Province of China. We have analyzed by genotyping a sample of 8600 subjects of the Li people and found that 53.45% subjects have only alpha-thal mutations with high frequencies of alpha(4.2) and alpha(3.7), but fewer --(SEA) mutation;3.83% have beta-thal mutations all identified to be 41/42 (-TCTF);whereas 7.99% carry both a-thal and beta-thal mutations. We also examined 9800 subjects of the Han people, and the result showed 12.16% subjects have only alpha-thal mutations with --(SEA) and alpha(3.7) the most frequent mutation types, 6.11% have only beta-thal mutations of 7 types, whereas 4.85% carry both alpha-thal and beta-thal mutations. Our study demonstrated that the Li people in Hainan province have a high incidence of -alpha(4.2) and -alpha(3.7) thalassemia, low frequencies of alpha-thal --(SEA), and a novel beta mutation, 41/42 (-TCTT). We provide the complete spectrum of a-thal and beta-thal mutations and a strategy for accurate molecular diagnostic testing in the Li people in Hainan Province of Southern China. Nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals for solid-state lasing systems: state-of-the-art and perspectives

Photonic crystals (PCs)-dielectric materials with a refractive index that is modulated periodically across the space-are essential components for a broad variety of photonic technologies requiring precise light-manipulation capabilities such as telecommunications, sensing, imaging, energy, stealth, and environmental remediation. Of all these, the emission of light from a radiation source embedded within a PC structure has been envisioned for engineering novel forms of light-emitting and quantum optics systems since the formalization of the PC concept by Yablonovitch and Jonh in 1987. Nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) fabricated by electrochemical oxidation-anodization-of aluminum provides an ideal and versatile effective medium that can be precisely engineered to create multiple forms of PC structures to harness distinct light-matter interactions (e.g., Bragg diffraction, constructive recirculation, confinement, and interference). The nanoporous framework of NAA-PCs can accommodate a range of light-emitting materials as gain media to modulate the properties of emitted light across the optical spectrum. This review provides an up-to-date overview of recent advances in the field of NAA-PC technology, including new anodization strategies and photonic crystal structures, and focuses on their application in light-emitting and lasing systems. We conclude our review with a list of challenges and opportunities, and the future prospects of this exciting field.
