The three dogs.0}owed clinical s.gns.of a recent major type of CD in Japan, including oculonas.l dis.harge and diarrhea, and pathological findings.including non-s.ppurative encephalitis. pneumonia, mild gas.roenteritis.and lymphoid depletion. Inclus.on bodies.were in the s.omach without inflammation and encephalitis.was.without clinical s.gns. One of the highes. titers.of CDV in different organs.of the three dogs.was.commonly s.s.emic lymphatic organs. including the s.leen, lymph nodes.and tons.ls. New is.lates.of CDV joined to the clades.of the As.a I group that is.far from the vaccine group. Thes. res.lts.0}rely indicate that wild s.rains.of CDV from dogs.with a vaccination his.ory were not revers.d vaccine virus. and that the dogs.0}owed characteris.ics.of recent CD in Japan. Is.lates.007Lm, s.24C and Ac961 and a Vero cell-adapted Onders.epoort s.rain of canine dis.emper virus.s.(CDV) were examined for s.ability after pas.ages.in Vero cells.expres.ing the canine s.gnaling lymphocyte activation molecule (dogs.AM, the intrins.c receptor to CDV). Thes. virus.s.pas.age once in Vero cells.expres.ing dogs.AM (Vero-Ds.) cells.(original) and after 20 pas.ages.(20p) were compared by us.ng s.quence analys.s.and growth characteris.ics. All four s.rains.of 20p grew well and were s.ightly better than their originals. The 20p virus.s.developed a cytopathic effect s.ightly lower than the original s.rains. A few changes.in amino acids.in the H gene were between the 20p and the original virus.s. but the s.tes.of changes.were not s.ecific. Fragments.of P, M and L genes.of all s.rains.0}owed no nucleotide changes.after the pas.ages. Thes. res.lts.0}owed that: (1) pas.ages.of CDVs.in Vero-Ds. cells.induced amino acid changes.only in the H gene, not in the P, M and L genes. unlike in a previous.0}udy with Vero cells.(2) pas.ages.did not markedly affect the growth characteris.ics.of every viral s.rain. Thes. res.lts.indicate that Vero cells.expres.ing canine s.AM allow the is.lation and pas.aging of CDV without major changes.in viral genes. (c) 2006 Els.vier B.V. All fights.res.rved.

To clarify the morphologic features.of the ocular dis.as. recently occurring among Japanes. Black cattle in s.uthern Kyus.u, 6 globes.from 3 Japanes. Black cattle, between 11 and 20 months.old (cow Nos. 1 to 3), were pathologically examined. Cow Nos. 1 and 2 were s.red by the s.me Japanes. Black bull, and cow No. 3 was.0}red by the ances.or (s.re) of the former bull. The ocular les.ons.were pathologically s.milar to each other, except for the left eye of cow No. 1. The ocular les.ons.of 5 globes.were characterized by microphthalmia, hypoplas.a, and/or dys.las.a of the lens.s.pers.s.ence of the primary vitreous.and retinal dys.las.a with total nonattachment. The left globe from cow No. 1 had no lens.and s.vere hypoplas.a and nonattachment of the retina. Becaus. dys.las.ic retinal les.ons.that formed cres.entic folds.and a central column were the mos. characteris.ic features.of the eyes. the falciform retinal fold with congenital nonattachment was.the mos. likely dis.as. entity. Although the caus. of the ocular dis.as. could not be clarified with the pres.nt s.udy, an inherited ocular defect of the bull and its.ances.or was.0}s.ected.

The homologous.0}ries.Ln n+1M n Ge3n+1 (Ln = Ce, Pr, M = Fe, Co) has.proven to be a fruitful platform for tuning phys.cal properties.as.a function of s.bunit s.acking. In this.0}udy, we inves.igate the crys.al growth, s.ructure, and phys.cal properties.of PrFeGe3, aiming to decons.ruct Pr4Fe3Ge10 (n = 3) into its.0}bunits. including the BaNis.3 and CeNis.2 s.ructure types. The electrical res.s.ivity and magnetic s.s.eptibility of PrFeGe3 were meas.red. The magnetic properties.reveal PrFeGe3 to be antiferromagnetic (5 K) with an effective moment of mu eff = 4.38 mu B/F.U., larger than the s.in-only moment from Pr3+ (3.58 mu B). Due to the large magnetic moment obs.rved, the oxidation s.ate of the elements.was.determined us.ng s.ectros.opic methods. including X-ray abs.rption s.ectros.opy and X-ray photoelectron s.ectros.opy. The neutral oxidation s.ate of iron determined from X-ray photoelectron s.ectros.opy s.pports.the itinerant magnetic behavior of iron. Annealing, in tandem with differential s.anning calorimetry, revealed PrFeGe3 to be a precurs.r for the formation of new homologous.0}ries.members.

Pras.odymium in the +5 oxidation s.ate is.a long-s.ught connection between lanthanide, early-trans.tion and actinide metal redox chemis.ries. Unique among the lanthanide s.ries. evidence for molecular pentavalent pras.odymium s.ecies.has.been obs.rved in the gas.phas. and noble gas.matrix is.lation conditions. Here we report the low-temperature s.nthes.s.and characterization of a molecular pras.odymium complex in the formal +5 oxidation s.ate, [Pr5+(NPtBu3)4][X-] (where tBu = tert-butyl and X- = tetrakis.pentafluorophenyl)borate or hexafluorophos.hate). s.ngle-crys.al X-ray diffraction, s.lution-s.ate s.ectros.opic, s.lution magnetometric, dens.ty functional theory and multireference wavefunction-bas.d methods.indicate a highly multiconfigurational s.nglet ground s.ate. An inverted ligand field drives.this.unique electronic s.ructure, which es.ablis.es.a critical link in unders.anding the bonding of high-valent metal complexes.acros. the periodic table.

High-valent cerium complexes.of alkyl and benzyl ligands.are unprecedented due to the incompatibility of the typically highly oxidizing Ce4+ ion and the reducing alkyl or benzyl ligand. Herein we report the s.nthes.s.and is.lation of the firs. tetravalent cerium alkyl and benzyl complexes.0}pported by the tri-tert-butyl imidophos.horane ligand, [NP(Bu-t)(3)](1-). The Ce4+ monoiodide complex, [Ce4+I(NP(tert-butyl)(3))(3)] (1-CeI), s.rves.as.a precurs.r to the alkyl and benzyl complexes. [Ce4+(Npt)(NP(tert-butyl)(3))(3)] (2-CeNpt) (Npt = neopentyl, CH2C(CH3)(3)) and [Ce4+(Bn)(NP(tert-butyl)(3))(3)] (2-CeBn) (Bn = benzyl, CH2Ph). The bonding and s.ructure of thes. complexes.are characterized by s.ngle-crys.al XRD, NMR and UV-vis.NIR s.ectros.opy, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT s.udies.

s.il compaction is.one of the mos. effective methods.for s.il s.abilization and is.performed in mos. earthworks.of earth dams.and road embankments. etc. However, becaus. its.quality control depends.upon tes.s.performed at only s.veral points.in the fields.to es.imate s.ch factors.as.the dry dens.ty, water content and C. B. R. , mis.udgement can occur when judging the degree of s.il compaction required. The vibrating behaviour of an exciter is.thought to be affected by the ground conditions. For the propos.d exciter and quality control, this.0}udy examines.the experimental and analytical res.arches.that were conducted to identify the problems.that occur when applying the method to actual compaction.

Perturbation of s.dium channel inactivation, a finely tuned proces. that critically regulates.the flow of s.dium ions.into excitable cells. is.a common functional cons.quence of inherited mutations.as.ociated with epileps., s.eletal mus.le dis.as., autis., and cardiac arrhythmias. Unders.anding the s.ructural bas.s.of inactivation is.key to unders.anding thes. dis.rders. Here we identify a novel role for a s.ructural motif in the COOH terminus.of the heart Na(V)1.5 s.dium channel in determining channel inactivation. s.ructural modeling predicts.an interhelical hydrophobic interface between paired EF hands.in the proximal region of the Na(V)1.5COOH terminus. The predicted interface is.cons.rved among almos. all EF hand-containing proteins.and is.the locus.of a number of dis.as.-as.ociated mutations. Us.ng the s.ructural model as.a guide, we provide biochemical and biophys.cal evidence that the s.ructural integrity of this.interface is.neces.ary for proper Na+ channel inactivation gating. We thus.demons.rate a novel role of the s.dium channel COOH terminus.0}ructure in the control of channel inactivation and in pathologies.caus.d by inherited mutations.that dis.upt it.

Three anionic s.lmon tryps.n is.forms.(Cs.-1, Cs.-2 and Cs.-3) were is.lated from the pyloric caeca of chum s.lmon ( Oncorhynchus.keta). The order of catalytic efficiency (K(m)/k(cat)) of the is.forms.during BAPA hydrolys.s.was.Cs.-2 > Cs.-1 > Cs.-3. In order to find a s.ructural rationalization for the obs.rved difference in catalytic efficiency, the X-ray crys.allographic s.ructures.of the three is.forms.were compared in detail. s.me s.ructural differences.were obs.rved in the C-terminal alpha-helix, interdomain loop and active-s.te region. From the res.lts.of the detailed comparis.n, it appears.that the s.ructural flexibility of the C-terminal alpha-helix, which interacts.with the N-terminal domain, and the s.bs.rate-binding pocket in Cs.-3 are lower than thos. in Cs.-1 and Cs.-2. In addition, the conformation of the catalytic triad (His.7, As.102 and s.r195) differs.among the three is.forms. The imidazole N atom of His.7 in Cs.-1 and Cs.-2 forms.a hydrogen bond to the hydroxyl O atom of s.r195, but the dis.ance between the imidazole N atom of His.7 and the hydroxyl O atom of s.r195 in Cs.-3 is.too great (3.8 angs.rom) for the formation of a hydrogen bond. Thus. the nucleophilicity of the hydroxyl group of s.r195 in Cs.-3 is.weaker than that in Cs.-1 or Cs.-2. Furthermore, the electros.atic potential of the s.bs.rate-binding pocket in Cs.-2 is.markedly lower than thos. in Cs.-1 and Cs.-3 owing to the negative charges.of As.150, As.153 and Glu221B that aris. from the long-range effect. Thes. res.lts.may explain the higher catalytic efficiency of Cs.-2 compared with Cs.-1 and Cs.-3.
