Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbon obtained from direct carbonization of a renewable biomass for counter electrode of efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

It is highly necessary to fabricate cost-effective counter electrode for promoting the development and practical deployment of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Herein, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbon (NSPC) is prepared through directly carbonizing a renewable biomass, Eupatorium fortunei Turcz., and used as an alternative to expensive Pt to fabricate low-cost counter electrode for high-performance DSSCs. Scanning electron microscopy and N2 adsorption analyses demonstrate that the obtained carbon sample displays a hierarchical pore structure containing macropore channels and well-developed mesopores formed on the wall of macropore channels. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements suggest that nitrogen and sulfur atoms are doped in the framework of as-prepared carbon sample. These favorable characteristics endow the obtained NSPC counter electrode with a superior electrocatalytic performance. Consequently, the assembled DSSC with NSPC counter electrode shows an efficiency of 8.25%, nearly matching the efficiency of the cell with conventional Pt counter electrode.

A Study on the Exit Width of Typical High-Speed Railway Platforms to Reduce the Risk of Passengers Falling off

Featured Application This paper proposes a novel approach to examine the rationality of the current exit design (width) on typical high-speed railway platforms in China to improve passenger safety. The empirical analysis based on real data offers valuable insights and practical suggestions to redesign and improve the features of high-speed railway *** There are several accidents in China's high-speed railways where passengers fall off the platform every year. In response to the risks of falling off high-speed railway platforms associated with passenger overcrowding, this study explores the platform exit width range in determining how to reduce the risk. In order to quantify the risk, we first define the risk probability to measure the likelihood of passengers falling off the platform. Then, we propose an integrated model that combines the passenger flow assignment with a dynamic calculation of passenger flow. This methodology addresses the passenger flow assignment through modeling passenger choices based on path utilities and determines an interpretable exit width range that ensures safe, non-congested evacuation within the designated timeframe. Empirical analysis reveals that the ranges of exit width and achieving different aims of risk probabilities are negatively correlated. The current exit width of 6 m on high-speed railway platforms is insufficient. Our results recommend expanding this width to between 6.43 and 7.01 m to facilitate more efficient passenger exits under normal operating conditions (risk probability of 10%). This adjustment potentially reduces the required investment in surveillance equipment by 77.7% and halves the monetary costs, thereby encouraging railway managers to implement these recommendations. Due to being restricted by a fixed platform width of 10 m, the limitation of optimizing the exit width aims to allow about 2770 passengers at most to leave the platform within the specified travel time.

Seismic fragility assessment of non-invasive geotechnical seismic isolation for existing bridges

Geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) is a new concept that has been proposed recently. The injection of polyurethane into the soil layer (non-intrusive GSI) reduces seismic fragility without altering the original structure, which may provide an effective seismic isolation solution for existing bridge structures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the seismic isolation effect and isolation mechanism of non-invasive GSI applied to existing bridges. First, a noninvasive GSI site modeling method is described based on the results of existing soilpolyurethane resonance column tests and the OpenSees computational platform. Subsequently, a refined dynamic analysis model of site-existing bridge interactions was established by combining the rusting theory. The seismic isolation effect of the non-invasive GSI and its effect on the seismic response of the bridge were explored using a nonlinear dynamic time-course analysis. The results showed that non-invasive GSI soils can change the characteristic period of ground motion, thus reducing the site effect. The seismic isolation effect was positively correlated with the percentage of injected polyurethane. Altering the characteristic period of the site and avoiding as many of the preeminent periods of ground motion as possible is the result of noninvasive GSI. The non-invasive GSI soil layer reduces the structural response and provides seismic isolation throughout the life cycle of corroded piers, and its fragility is significantly reduced. Especially, the "old" piers have significant seismic isolation effect, effectively limiting serious damage or even collapse under earthquakes. The results of this study provide a reference for noninvasive GSI design of existing bridge structures.

P-BERT: Toward Long Sequence Modeling by Enabling Language Representation With Prefix Sequence Compression, Soft Position Embedding, and Data Augmentation for Patent Relevance Assessment

Recent works have increasingly adopted pre-trained language models, such as BERT, to model technical semantics for patent relevance assessment. However, existing truncation and divide-merge strategies, used to handle input length constraints, results in feature loss and semantic isolation. This limits the effectiveness of pre-trained language models in capturing long sequence semantics for patent relevance assessment. Because patent relevance is evaluated based on local sequence semantics, this paper proposes a patent-oriented bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (P-BERT) to enable the semantic modeling ability of long sequences. The characteristics of P-BERT lie in a prefix sequence compression method, a soft position embedding method and a data augmentation method. The first one can retrain more technical features within the input constraints via transforming full sequences into partial sequences while the second one reconstructs local sequence semantics for partial sequences. As for the last one, it contains sample and feature augmentation to improve the generalization and robustness. Due to the scarcity of training corpus for patent relevance assessment, a dual constraint strategy is proposed to generate a supervised corpus, DualCons. Experimental results demonstrate that DualCons can help BERT obtain the best ranking performance compared with other strategies. Model evaluations show the effectiveness of P-BERT. It reaches an improvement of 2%-6% in recall-oriented metrics and an improvement of 1%-5% in accuracy-oriented indicators over the state-of-the-art baselines. All those would promote the engineering applications of pre-trained language models in patent relevance assessment.

Nitric oxide shifts the impact of ionic liquid on microbial community structure in rhizosphere of Arabidopsis

Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used in various fields due to their excellent properties. Despite their utility, there is limited knowledge regarding the phytotoxic properties of ILs and the mechanisms by which plants develop resistance to them. This is particularly true when considering the role of nitric oxide (NO) in response to ILs stress. Herein, we investigated the mechanism by which endogenous NO reduces the ILs' phytotoxicity in Arabidopsis from the perspective of rhizosphere microorganisms. We investigated the impact of 1,3-dibutyl imidazole bromide (DIB) on microbial diversity and community in the rhizosphere of Arabidopsis lines with varying endogenous NO levels, using a high throughput sequencing method. DIB did not affect microbial taxon numbers, richness, or evenness;however, it did alter microbial beta diversity and community structure in the rhizosphere of Arabidopsis. Elevated endogenous NO increased fungal richness and evenness, shifted DIB's impact on microbial community structure, and enriched more resistant species and toxin-decomposing species. These findings suggest a potential mechanism for plants to resist IL stress. Our study not only elucidates the toxicological mechanisms of ILs but also reveals the involvement of NO in plant responses to IL stress, providing valuable insights for future environmental risk assessments and mitigation strategies.

Laser-based additive manufacturing of bulk metallic glasses: A review on principle, microstructure and performance

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have gained significant attention in the engineering field due to their unique microstructure and excellent properties. However, the fabrication of large-sized and complex-shaped BMGs components remains a major challenge. Laser-based additive manufacturing (LAM) techniques offer a promising solution to conquer the limitations of traditional methods in manufacturing BMGs. Theoretically, LAM techniques can achieve extremely high cooling rates of over 104 K/s, resulting in the formation of metallic glass structures within the tiny molten pools. More significantly, the bottom-up concept of LAM enables the layer-bylayer construction of large-sized BMGs parts. Herein, this review extensively explores cutting-edge research on various aspects of utilizing LAM techniques in BMGs fabrication. It provides a comprehensive discussion of the forming mechanism of BMGs during LAM, focusing on factors such as heterogeneous microstructure, crystallization behavior and defect elimination. Additionally, the influence of composition and process parameters on the performance of LAM-produced BMGs, including mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility, is systematically reviewed. An outlook on the LAM techniques for BMGs production is presented, aiming to provide some guiding principles for future research directions in this pioneering field.

Z-Block-type optical combining device based on Lan-WDM technology are widely used in the transmitter end of optical communication in data centers, and with the wide range of applications, higher requirements are put forward for their production efficiency and dimensional accuracy. In order to solve the problems of low efficiency, susceptibility to human factor interference and low measurement accuracy in the traditional manual method of sorting and dimensioning measurement in the Z-Block production process, this study proposes a Z-Block centroid positioning and dimensioning scheme based on a machine vision method. Firstly, the Z-Block visual automatic sorting and dimensioning measurement system scheme and optical imaging scheme were designed to achieve high-quality imaging of Z-Block. Then, according to the problems of image edge noise, poor contrast, and weak edge caused by the complex production environment in the process of Z-Block visual imaging, an improved Canny edge detection algorithm was proposed, which used Blob analysis for denoising and ROI positioning, optimized gradient strength and direction calculation method and local dynamic threshold selection method, and realized high-accuracy edge detection. Finally, in order to solve the problems of inaccurate measurement point division and unsmooth overall contour in the edge detection results, a contour fitting method based on sub-pixel accuracy was proposed to achieve high-precision dimensional measurement. Experimental results show that the proposed method, on the basis of high-accuracy edge detection and high-precision contour fitting method, achieves the average error of center point positioning of (5, 5) pixel, the average error of dimensional measurement (0.03, 0.03) mm, and the average execution time of the algorithm is 143.34 ms, which can meet the automatic production of Z-Block.

Deciphering the impact of heavy metal mixed exposure on lipid metabolism using three statistical models

Lipid metabolism disorders pose a significant threat to human health. However, the relationship between heavy metal mixed exposure and lipid metabolism remains poorly understood. This study recruited 1717 residents living near a chromium factory in northeast China. The concentrations of blood Cr, Mn, Cd, Pb, V, and serum CHOL, TG, LDL and HDL levels were measured. Generalized linear model (GLM), quantile g-computation (Qg-comp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were simultaneously employed to investigate the associations between heavy metal mixed exposure and lipid markers levels. GLM analysis revealed significant associations between blood Cr concentration and HDL (beta = -0.07;95%CI: -0.09, -0.05), LDL (beta = -0.06;95%CI: -0.11, -0.02), and CHOL (beta = 0.07;95%CI: 0.01, 0.12) levels. V concentration was positively associated with HDL (beta = 0.12;95%CI: 0.06, 0.18) and LDL (beta = 0.17;95%CI: 0.04, 0.30) levels. Qg-comp analysis indicated a negative association between heavy metal mixed exposure and HDL (beta = -0.040;95%CI: -0.073, -0.006) level. BKMR model further confirmed the negative relationship between heavy metal mixed exposure and HDL, with the interaction between blood Cr (> 1.05 mu g/L) and blood V (> 5.16 mu g/L) contributing to decreased HDL levels. Our findings suggested that heavy metal mixed exposure had impacts on HDL and CHOL levels, and the Cr and V may mutually play a predominant role in the observed abnormal HDL levels. [GRAPHICS] .

Insight into the aggregation kinetics of nanoplastics in aquatic environments: Combined effects of protein corona and particle size

As one of the emerging contaminants, nanoplastics (NPs) are gaining increasing attention. In this study, the aggregation kinetics of different sized NPs with bovine serum albumin (BSA) corona in aquatic environments were systematically investigated. Results indicated NPs with smaller size were highly stable ascribed to electrostatic repulsion and hydration layer repulsion. In NaCl solutions, BSA corona exerted a steric hindrance effect to impede the aggregation of NPs based on the extended-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (X-DLVO) theory. On the contrary, BSA corona promoted the aggregation of NPs due to the parch-charge attraction in the reaction- controlled regime (RLCA) in CaCl2 solutions. Nevertheless, the aggregation process of various sized NPs was significantly different in the diffusion-controlled regime (DLCA), mainly due to the distinct molecular weight and molecular number of adsorbed BSA distributed on NPs surfaces. Specifically, steric hindrance and cation bridging dominated the aggregation of 40 and 200 nm NPs, respectively. According to the two dimension correlation spectroscopy analysis (2D-COS), different sizes of NPs interacted with BSA corona in a distinct sequence of structural change. This study provided insight into how the BSA corona and the size of NPs combined to affect NPs aggregation, which could establish a foundation for accurate prediction of NPs transport. Environmental Implication: Formation of protein corona may alter the surface structure and properties of NPs, which in turn affects the transport of NPs in aquatic environments. This study clarified the mechanisms of combined influence of particle size and BSA corona on the aggregation process of NPs based on theoretical calculation and Smoluchowski theory. Synchronous Perovskite Crystallization Regulation and Buried Interface Modification Improve the Stability and Efficiency of a Planar Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cell

The numerous defects in inorganic perovskites and inferior buried interfaces result in serious nonradiative recombination and energy loss, exacerbating the deterioration of the performance of inorganic perovskite solar cells. Here, we develop a facile strategy to simultaneously improve CsPbIBr2 perovskite quality by regulating perovskite crystallization and modify the buried interface by forming a 6-aminonicotinic acid (6AA) molecular interlayer through adding 6AA into a CsPbIBr2 precursor solution. It is found that adding 6AA into the CsPbIBr2 precursor effectively regulates the crystallization process of CsPbIBr2 perovskite because 6AA molecules exhibit a strong intermolecular interaction with CsPbIBr2 precursor components, resulting in forming a compact CsPbIBr2 perovskite film with improved morphology and decreased defects. Meanwhile, 6AA molecules are pushed downward during the perovskite crystallization process and accumulate at the buried interface to form the 6AA interlayer, which improves the interface contact and enhances the charge transport at the buried interface. The perovskite quality improvement and the buried interface modification effectively decrease the nonradiative recombination and interface charge loss. Consequently, the fabricated planar carbon-based CsPbIBr2 solar cell demonstrates an efficiency of 10.97% with a remarkably promoted long-term stability.
